The beer pours a deep rusty maroon capped by an inch of a creamy neon pink head that laces. The nose is fresh picked, sweet raspberries, almost too sweet for my taste. As expected, the sweetness packs an even bigger punch in the taste, but blends well with the hearty raspberries and malt. It reminds me of blushing monk, but is definitely different (side-by-side?). This beer drinks with a near full body, slightly under carbonated, with sweet raspberries up front followed by an unexpected tannin-like bitterness in the finish. It's quite balanced and doesn't drink overly sweet. This beer is worth trying at the brewery and much better than their IPA in my opinion.

Big thanks to DaveHack for this pour.
This poured out as a vibrant red color with basically no head or retention. The smell of the beer has a big sweet raspberry aroma, lots of sugar in there. The taste of the beer is very sweet, lots of syrupy raspberry. The flavor isn't very tart. The mouthfeel of the beer is light bodied with a healthy carbonation. Overall it's very sweet, possibly appealing to a lot of people. I enjoyed it but not something I'll need again.

Had this on 2013-01-05 in Norristown, PA
A - Opaque purple with a 1/2-finger light purple/pinkish head a light lacing.
S - Tart, pungent, essence of raspberries. Not sweet swelling. Don't detect much else.
T - Tart raspberry wallops the tongue. There's just enough of a malt backbone to let you know you are drinking beer. They must have used a whole field of raspberries to make this beer. It's not sweet like a Lindemans. I'm at a loss for words to describe how good this is. I'd have it as an aperitif, with a meal and for desert.
M - Medium body and light carbonation. Sticky, prickly and I think I got some raspberry seeds stuck in my teeth. Just right.
O - This is sublime. I hearby declare this the best fruit beer I have ever had. Tops their own Phoenix Kriek and I agree with the previous reviewer, it tops the New Glarus Raspberry Tart. Wow.

Been chasing this one ever since I had the Kriek and then heard about this. 64oz. growler into a Cigar City snifter.
Pours a .5 finger purple pink head that dissipates quickly. Beer is a striking, clear, dark purple. Lacing is patchy and sparse with ok stick. Solid.
Nose is straight raspberry pulp and seed. Fruity and very robust. Exactly as it should be.
Opens sweet crushed raspberries. A slight booziness is detectable here and there but fruit is powerful and dominant. Not overly sweet though. Nice tartness blends in and finishes with a raspberry seed bitterness. Sweet and tart fruit finish. Perfect.
Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Prickly, silky and sticky in the mouth and goes down slightly boozy and dry. Messy finish with a long, lingering aftertaste. Again, very, very good.
Probably the best fruit beer out there. And as a pair, Selin's Grove's Kriek and Framboise outperform Raspberry Tart and Belgian Red. Do yourself a favor and go get this. It's an experience.

Poured from a 2L growler into a tulip. Thanks to Dunt for bringing this over.
Appearance: There is no color to call this besides raspberry red. Solid all the way through, like it was a glass of raspberry juice. A small off-white head sits on top and fades to nothing as the glass goes on.
Smell: Sweet raspberries. A little bit of tartness at the end. Nothing else really presents itself.
Taste: The flavor starts out sweet and syrupy with a strong raspberry flavor. The raspberry flavor carries all the way through, blotting out any other flavors. If anything, it is a little sweeter than a raspberry, with just a little bit of tartness toward the end.
Mouthfeel: Sweet and a little syrupy, with light carbonation and a fuller than medium body.
Overall: Good raspberry beers rank among my favorite style, and this definitely tastes like sweet raspberries, but there is just not the complexity to really drive this beer into the great category.

I had this poured from a growler during the bottle share at the Jackie O's bottle release. Poured into a sample glass.
Appearance: Pours a reddish dark brown with a mild amount of pink head that goes away.
Smell: Sweet, floral raspberries dominate. Just a hint of tartness. Simple yet fantastic.
Taste: Sweet but tart. Tons of raspberry. This is a really good fruit beer.
Mouthfeel: The body is on the thick side of medium with a tingle of carbonation and a dry finish.
Overall: This is a really nice raspberry beer. Would be a super brunch beer. Easy to drink.

Growler shared by someone, I think Jason.
A - Very deep ruby color, little bit of purple on the edges. Great dark colored and purplish head on it that left some fantastic lace. Awesome looking beer.
S - Smells sweet, with a lot of rich raspberries and maybe a bit of sugar. Some slight earth tones.
T - A decent bit of tartness, with a lot of raspberries, although they are a bit sugary and like candy. That is not a bad taste, but seems to take it more from a great raspberry beer to something slightly artificial. Finish is a bit like chemicals.
M - Syrupy, lower carbonation, medium bodied but somehow feels heavier.
O - Some real positive things for this beer. It's good, great in some areas, but could still be improved upon.

Growler. Poured into a tulip glass a murky, bright maroon color with minimal head that collars around the glass. The head is actually a light pink color. The aroma is all raspberry, almost like I am smelling a raspberry jelly! The taste is massively sweet with some minimal bitterness in the end similiar to biting down on a raspberry seed or something like that.Really not that tart at all. Light/medium mouthfeel with some carbonation. It does have an odd taste in it that I can't quite put my finger on though that throws it off slightly for me. The 6.5% is not even noticeable at all over all the fruit flavors. Extremely easy drinking. Minimal lace at all. Well, it's good if you just LOVE raspberries but its almost a little to much. Given the choice I would prefer the New Glarus raspberry beer over this.

Had at Hobo Tasting #2 with mikesgroove. Big thanks to Mike for sharing this one with me! Served from growler into a Duck-Rabbit snifter. Poured a hazy deep dark red with a minimal white head. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt and raspberries. The flavor was of sweet malt and big raspberries. It had a light feel on the palate with low carbonation. Overall this brew made me actually yell 'raspberries, raspberries, raspberries!' upon my first sip. It was a nice brew, but good lord raspberries... I would have loved to see some other flavors going on here for sure. Just too much missing in both the aroma and flavor to call this a good brew. It is worth trying if you like Krieks and raspberries, but that is about it.

hobo tasting number two at the main street pub. shared with calton as always.
the pour was really nice, pours out a deeply clouded and hazed raspberry color, little in the way of head but soo thick looking, almost like puree you could not see anything at all through this. aroma is raspberries, i have never smelled sooo many in my life. its was like straight juice with little to nothing in the way of beer or alcohol at all. no tartness, nothing just sweet juice in the aroma. this carried over into the flavor but to a fault. there was no tartness and nothing in the way of anykind of alcohol at all. incredibly drinkable, however it just was too one sided, too much in the way of juice and fruit and not enough beer, tartness, sourness, or anything else to offer it balance. it really was like puree of raspberries.
overall the most over powering fruit i have ever come across in a beer, but almost to a fault. needed a little bit more to balance it.

Received this growler in a great trade with Stakem.. Thanks a bunch Adam!! A fantastic trade from front to back.
Shared with the normal peeps.. Pours sorta muddy red brownish.. pinkish head.
The brew is thick raspberry.... sorta jammy... big and sweet with plenty.... tons... TONS .. of fruit...
Flavor is more of the same... but in liquid form... great red raspberry on the palate... bordering on "tooo much".... how is that possible? Try it for yourself.... raspberry jam and still some background "beer flavor", but don't kid yourself, this is fruity and unapologetic.
I have no idea how the brewers pack so much fruit flavor in this growler without ever seeming artificial... always natural and always pleasing.... amazing really.
It would be epic to pair this up against a Lou Pepe and a New Glarus.... good times for sure. Thanks again Adam.... badass.

Thanks to Brandon Chaney for hooking me up with a growler of this.
A: The beer looks pretty, and unsurprisingly appears the exact color of raspberries. There is a pinkish head of an eighth inch. This recedes hastily, leaving virtually no lacing behind. The carbonation level appears to be fairly low.
S: The aroma is all about raspberries.
T: The flavor is mostly sweet, with a slight tartness that occurs naturally from the raspberry itself. There's a lot of fruit in this brew!
M: The feel is medium bodied and coats the palate. The beer isn't syrupy or viscous, per se, but does feel dense, in a way.
D: A good offering and very enjoyable.

Selin's Grove Framboise has a body with shades of purple and red, and a small pinkish head that manages to leave one or two spots on my glass.
This beer smells like raspberries. There isn't a whole lot more to say; fresh, tart, sweet and juicy. Nice.
The raspberries provide both sweetness and tartness and are completely dominant in this beer, and it's great. If you really try to look you can taste a hint of what seems like Belgian yeast in the background, adding just a hint of spice. Mostly, I would guess that although you don't taste the yeast, it is responsible for adding just a hint of dryness to the beer and keeping it from being cloying. Whether the yeast is responsible or not, this beer is certainly not cloying, it is mostly tart and a little sweet and very good.
Lively, ever so slightly effervescent carbonation keeps this beer from becoming syrupy, because the body is surprisingly big on this one.
You can try to sip, you can try to savor, but you will catch yourself gulping.

A growler filled earlier this afternoon. Spare no price when it comes to SGBC fruit beers.
A: The raspberry ale is is a maroon color, straddling the line between Belgian brown and raspberry red. A small head, off-white, accompanies the first pour.
S: The nose is sweet raspberries, no hint of sourness, paired with a bready, spicy brown beer base. The fruit is the star but the underlying aromas as a strong support.
T: When it comes to fruit and beer, SGBC can do no wrong. Framboise, Kriek, Saison de Peche, each is world class in its own right. Framboise combines the sweet juiciness of raspberries with a Belgian base. The underlying body is chewy, an unobtrusive base for the sweetness of the fruit. And the fruit, how it lingers on the palate, sweet but not in your face. The yeast strain leaves a residual spice that reminds me of Saison de Peche. The raspberry lingers, a lasting impression from a world-class ale.
M: The mouthfeel is fruit-dominated, a sweet landscape of lush raspberries. It's hard to think of a negative comment for this ale.
D: I don't know the abv but it doesn't feel very high. I regret that I have a wife that I need to share this growler with. A top-notch ale.

Thanks to Tanger for sending a growler of this much-wanted brew. Shared at the BA Gathering at Goose Island, and served in my Red Hook pint glass. I'm going to review this as a fruit/vegetable beer, as Selin's never makes the claim that it is a lambic and/or uses wild yeast.
A - One finger of pinkish foam that dissipates quickly to a ring and haze. Not much in the way of lacing. Murky purple-red-brown color.
S - Initially was a little muted due to the cold, but when it warmed, sweet jeebus, there was a lot of raspberry. It's definitely in the jam/purée/preserves side of things, and not raw or unripened ones either. Balanced out by a nice graham crackery/pie crust malt character.
T - The taste is more in the direction of fresh, raw, ripe raspberries. Great tartness, well-hidden ABV, and a pleasant real fruit sweetness that lingers into the aftertaste. You could argue it's one-dimensional, but what a dimension!
M - The texture is thicker that New Glarus' offering, the closest point of comparison, with a lower but still tingly carbonation. Initially sticky, but finishes quite dry that complements the tartness. More beer, less soda.
D - Shockingly drinkable, and not diabetic (although I was tempted to drop in a scoop of ice cream at one point). This doesn't look as nice, and the smell doesn't "pop" as much as Raspberry Tart, but otherwise this is a worthy competitor with a superior texture. Highly recommended.

Received this brew from BeerTruth because I wooped his ass in something (too many ass kicking's to remember). I absolutely love the Peach Saison by Selin's Grove and I've heard great things about this bad boy. Damn I love fruit beers. Drank from my Stone India Pale Ale flute.
Appearance- Pours a dark and murky pinkish red with almost zero head what-so-ever. After a few seconds a small fizzy white cap appears then dissipates as quickly as it came. A super small collar remains along with zero lacing.
Smell- Holy balls... Loads and loads of luscious tart raspberries just permeate my glass. Honestly, not much else in the nose. Raspberries and a touch of alcohol. Simple, yet amazing.
Taste- Tastes exactly like you think it would! Starts with a nicely tart kick of macerated raspberries that are SO fruity and awesome. There is a slightly bitter undertone between the raspberries that I'm assuming are a bit of noble hop. The alcohol is noticeable but definitely not overbearing. Other than that this beer is just 100% raspberries, slightly tart with a tinge of sweetness.
Mouthfeel- Very thick and luscious with a velvety smoothness that is perfecto. A small amount of carbonation lends to this most excellent feel.
Drinkability- Off the charts. I can't necessarily say that I like this better than New Glarus Raspberry Tart but it's at least just as good. I am definitely confident in saying that New Glarus has a challenger out there in the fruit beer category. I haven't had enough brews from Selin's Grove yet to knock NG off their pedestal but man this is tasty. Thanks much Adam!!!

On tap at the brewpub on 12/30/09 (also purchased a growler to share back home). Pours a beautiful ruby red with small amount of lighter colored head. Smells like raspberry sorbet with vanilla swirl. The taste does not disappoint. If you like raspberries, you will love this beer. A crisp tart bite and sweet raspberry flavor offered in perfect balance. Medium body with very mild (just enough) carbonation to make this very smooth. This beer is amazing.

Brought a growler of this back from the brewpub. Pours a cloudy, murky beet red color with some light pink foam on top. Keeps a thin lace.
Smell just jumps out of the glass with very appetizing fresh raspberry aromas. Slight tartness to them but they just smell fresh and juicy. Not much more to it than that but it's exceptional.
Taste is also bursting with fresh raspberry flavor. It's both sweet and tart, but it's not too sweet, nor too tart. Maybe it's most easily described in relative terms. It's not as sweet as Lindeman's framboise, nor as tart as an authentic Belgian lambic. I'd be more inclined to label this a fruit beer than a lambic actually. It's extremely good and I cannot imagine a way in which it could be made to tastier. That's what a 5 is supposed to be, right?
Mouthfeel is medium bodied and pretty crisp. Maybe not quite as crisp as it could be, but it's quite smooth.
This is simply an outstanding beer from Selin's Grove. Tasty as hell and very drinkable. Highly recommended.

Big thanks to Frank for hooking me up with some local PA beer. Poured from a growler into a flute glass.
A- Pours a murky maroon color with purplish hues towards the edges of the glass. Near zero visibility. Produced two fingers width of white, purplish colored head. Reduced to a thick, foamy ring throughout consumption. Lots of lacing.
S- Raspberries, raspberries, and more raspberries! Such a pleasant fragrance. Fresh and ripe raspberries give off a tremendous sweetness with a hint of tartness. Very one dimensional, but done very well.
T- Upfront, the raspberry flavor is unmistakable. Almost gives off a woody, fruit flavor. As consumed, the sweetness of the raspberry grows all the way to finish. Finishes with a rich, non-artificial sweetness with just enough off a tartness to give some contrast. These raspberries are fresh!
M- Light bodied with just enough carbonation. If anything, it could have used a little more (might be b/c it lost some in the growler fill). Finishes more on the dry side, but still plenty of moisture is left on the palate.
D- I had to force myself not to drink this beer so fast. It's been a long time since I have had to do that with a beer. The more and more I think about, I can finish this growler with ease...hard to say with many other fruit beers.
Overall, this beer should be changed from a lambic to a fruit beer. Still, this is a phenomenal beer. I enjoyed the New Glarus Raspberry Tart just a little bit better in terms of taste, but oddly enough I found this beer to be way more drinkable. One of the best tasting and most drinkable fruit beers I have had to date. Highly recommended!

A HUGE freaking thanks to BA "FooFaa" for getting me this growler as part of Growling At The Moon. It was a pleasure for me to try this gem of a beer, and I have been a long time fan of Selins Grove.
Poured into a Rodenbach fluted glass.
A: dark red ruby color with pinkish purple foam for the head, lightly carbonated for this style when compared to others like NG Raspberry Tart (which up until now was my favorite in this style).
S: sweetness all around, ripe raspberry fruit with a tinge of tartness. Sweetness plays the dominant role, but not overpowering to the tartness, its a nice balance to the aroma.
T: holy shit....where do I begin with this one? First taste knocked me on the floor. Sweet raspberry, slight tart vinegar taste in the end. Bubbles slowly danced across the tongue. Pure bliss.
M: again, very easy on the palate, a wonderful beer to drink. Its sweetness to tart ratio is done perfectly. One not overpowering the other, well done! Compared to some of the other better raspberry beers, this one is lighter in carbonation, not a bad thing, just a notable difference. Still enough there to get the bubbles to dance along the tongue and mouth in a ballet laden with velvety smoothness. Soft and medium bodied. Awesome.
D: Wow, my only question is, "how do I get more of this stuff?". I can easily see myself finishing this growler tonight, but gotta wait to share some with the wifey tomorrow night.
Again, a true pleasure to drink and experience this fine beer. It only reassures me of the top quality beers that Selins Grove is putting out. Solid brew!

On tap at the brewery.
Appearance: deep murky purple with a lighter purple head. One of the more striking looking beers I've seen.
Nose: Pure raspberry puree. There's a hint of malts hiding in the background but just imagine the richest raspberry dessert you've ever had and that's what you've got.
Taste: Intensely, overwhelmingly raspberry. A bit sweeter than I expected with much less tartness. If they did a wild/lacto-ed version of this it would be incredible. For someone who doesn't really like overly berry-forward things, I still found this to be an incredibly rich and tasty brew. Oh yeah there's a bit of breadiness under the berries but it's barely noticable.
Mouthfeel: I wish it was a bit fuller, but overall pretty nice.
Overall: Impressive that this much raspberry flavor can be pumped into a beer. Definitely something I'd only want once, but I'm glad to have tried one and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Dark ruby red pour, either it was opaque or just appeared to be in the dim light of the bar. The beer was pretty flat, no head at all, and little to no noticeable bubbling. Well it is supposed to be a Flanders red and not a genuine framboise (though I don't really know why they call it that anyway). Sweet raspberry aroma, slightly acidic (acetic), earthy. Taste was full of raspberry puree, mostly sweet with a touch of vinegar tartness, bready malts and some earthiness. Syrupy mouthfeel, low carbonation made it pretty mellow. Not bad, but not nearly as good as the kriek.

Poured from a fresh growler into a tulip glass. Has a really nice pink hue with a link pink head. Raspberry aroma hits the nose first and it is nice and powerful, not much else going on. The first sip hits the tongue and its tart raspberry and some sweetness from the malt. They work very well together. The beer is not overly sweet, the tartness of the raspberries keeps everything is check. It has a nice smooth medium to full bodied mouth feel. Carbonation was on the lighter side. I really enjoyed this beer. .

A - The body was cloudy and showcased a dark ruby hue...the head was one finger tall and pink in color...the creamy head fell to a thin cap and left attractive lacing
S - Sweet raspberries...earthy tone brings some dirt...candied sugar and other Belgian-esque spices
T - The raspberries do not hide themselves...there is an initial blast of sweetness from the raspberries...towards the middle they give off a tartness and that sets in for the finish...some winey characteristics are coming across...drying Belgian spices and yeast are lingering in the background
M - Medium bodied...smooth, soft carbonation, more tart than sweet
O - This is a very nice fruit beer...it's not as sweet as a lambic, so don't go expecting that...the raspberries do their job of being tart and sweet and provide enough flavor throughout

To me the gold standard of American (heck, world!) framboises is New Glarus Raspberry Tart. We happened to be driving up the Susquehanna and found the Selin's Grove, and of course had to try the framboise, thinking... no, *hoping*... that it could be ask good as the NGRT. Well colour me red and stick me with thorns! It is as good if... dare I say it?... better! Gads this is a wonderful beer. It is not, apparently, strictly a lambic but a raspberry ale (I'll have to learn that difference better). Smooth, low-head, sweet-tart just like a raspberry should be. My wife's description was 'feels like you got hit in the face with a raspberry". Yep, that's about it. The largest problem with this is that is is SO quaffable one might not get up after a couple. Try it!
