On tap at the brewpub 3/3/12. I was very excited to try this given the previous reviews, and well...

Pours a clouded dark mahogany color with a thick frothy light tan head. Minimal carbonation and the head quickly fades to a thin ring and some rings of lace. Aroma is a strong balance of biscuit malt, herbal hops and pine and citrus resin. Flavor was dominated by malt and spice with an orange resin and pine finish. Finish is dry and clean, with minimal bitterness. Medium bodied, smooth and chewy with non-existent carbonation. I verified with our server that this was not on cask today and walked to the bar to visually confirm the draft tap. Wouldn't have guessed this was an IPA, more of an amber or winter warm, with a strong rich malt body, some light sweet spices and a chewy, dry hop finish (lacking any bitterness). Maybe this was just an old keg of this year's batch, but this was a massive disappointment.

Ruby amber color, that seemed to have good clarity as near as I could tell in the dim light of the Selin's Grove pub. Creamy light tan head that leaves stripes of lacing on the glass.

Pine and citrus hop aromas punctuate a caramel and biscuit foundation. Equally hoppy and malty introduction. The taste is full of dank hoppy smells - pine, citrus fruits, spice, with a firm and assertive malty base. This is not a west coast IPA where it is ALL about the hops. Nor is it a typical east coast IPA where the hops seem to be losing to the malt foundation for the center of attention. Rather it is both a big hoppy AND malty beer, with a great balance between the two aspects. Well integrated and well made.

Medium body with a full, creamy mouthfeel. Overall, somewhat similar to DFH 75 minute, but much hoppier. A great American IPA.

A - Served with a darker shade of golden amber body and a big, fluffy, two finger head...the head stayed around for a while and became rocky...chunky lacing was left

S - The nose is all about the hops...these are intense aromas coming out...fresh citrus, resiny pine, herbal, and dank

T - Again, the hops carry over their powerful qualities to the flavors...it's all about the hops baby...they are extremely fresh and resiny...the sweetness from the citrus and the soft herbal notes play together nicely...there is a lightly toasted malt presence lingering in the background...it's kicking the hops down, it's rather adding to the body...sharp, piney hops finish this beer to make it bold and bitter

M - Medium bodied...creamy and bitter that's all you need to know...the cask helps a lot here

O - This was one extremely hoppy IPA and I must say I think I preferred it over the regular version...I did not have it on tap, but I would go with the cask version again, hands down

Initially, slight disappointment began to sink in as the regular IPA was not listed on the days tap list nor to bee seen on the tap handles, however, flipping the menu brought quite the excitement when i saw this was available on cask.

Pours a hazed coppery gold, moderate cap of soapy, lightly off-white froth. Scent is a pure explosion of hops... citrus, check... tropical, check... pine, check... floral, check... grassy, check... herbal... check... lightly sweet and biscuity malt backbone provided a touch of balance. Strong hop notes lead the taste, not overly bitter despite big pine and grapefruit presence compared to the other hop notes. Light sweet and biscuity malt presence again on the taste. Nice creamy body from the cask pour, low carbonation, lightly dry finish. Fantastic IPA all around, would to love to sample the regular draft version for comparison.

Served on cask, and on-tap, at the Brewpub.

A - Pours amber brown with a creamy one and a half finger tall off white head leaving small streaks of lace down the entire glass. A pretty nice pour but nothing mind blowing.

S - Smells of pungent grassy hops, pine, fresh slices citric fruit, and the lightly toasted caramel malt backbone. This nose is slightly better than the tap version but it still lacks that little something that makes it great, still a very good nose none the less.

T - Starts off with a big dose of grassy hop bitterness slowly giving way to a mix of citric fruit, caramel sweetness, some doughy malt, and some light spice help round things out. Finish is a touch dry with some lingering hop bitterness. All things considered this cask version is way better than the tap version, with the smooth feel helping to round out the rough edges.

M - Medium body and flavor with moderate carbonation. Smooth, creamy feel allows you to really drink a ton of this one. I think the cask serving style may be the perfect one for this beer, on-tap it was probably a 4 but on cask an easy 5.

O - One of the better beers I have had from Selin's Grove. Compared to the regular IPA I would say I still prefer that one but this version, when served on cask, may be a tiny bit better. If you have the opportunity to try this one I suggest you do.

From the time this beer first went on tap this year up until it kicked, this brew has been the sole reason I took the hour drive one-way to the brewery 4 times in 2 weeks. Before entering, I knew this beer was all I wanted. When I saw it was available on cask, it only made the last trip that much more worth while.

From the hand pump into a pub style glass, this brew appears a clear amber brown with orange hints around the edges and ruby clarity when held to the light. 2 fingers worth if silky nitro-like tan froth sit atop this brew with nearly flawless retention. A complete wall of lace sticks to the glass.

The smell of this brew is fresh with grassy hops, herbs, leaves, pine, rindy fruits and a bit of catty aspect. There is some faint slice notes around the edges that integrate with a smell of grapefruit pulp.

The taste is herbal and rindy with a bit of spiced accent. Some green veggie hop aspects are present that mildly bring on some catty simcoe flavoring. The zest and rindy flavors reminiscent of grapefruit is present mixing and bringing out more catty to leafy and herbal components of the hops towards the back. The aftertaste includes a mild amount of toasty grain sweetness.

This is a creamy smooth feeling brew due to the cask delivery. Silky and coating in the mouth, this is very easy drinking. This brew is borderline poundable. The alcohol is very well integrated. I was a huge fan of this brew both on tap and via growler. The cask delivery is exactly what this needed to take it into the next realm of enjoyment.

Poured from a 1L growler into a tulip. Thanks to Dunt for bringing this over.

Appearance: The beer itself is hazy brown color, slightly opaque in the center and transparent in the edges. A medium tan cap rests on top, fading rather quickly to a ring around the edges.

Smell: The grassy hops hit my nose first. Earthy hops and Christmas spices follow, and I finally get a bit of caramel sweetness at the end.

Taste: The flavor here is solid; I think they do a nice job of incorporating Christmas spices into an IPA format, which is not an easy thing to do. There is a caramel sweetness that blends in with a bready, toasted malt character up front. Some cinnamon, nutmeg, and clove give the flavor an interesting pop. A little bit of earthy spice in the hop profile, but it mostly has a drawn out grassiness. The finish has a bit of spice and a moderate bitterness.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation is just a little bit on the light side, probably from the growler. The body is a little bit fuller than medium. The grassy bitterness leaves a light residue on my tongue after each sip.

Overall: I am glad they decided to start making this beer again. A festive IPA that manages to have seasonal spice and still follow the style gets points for effort and uniqueness.

Holy hops. This beer is packed with hop flavor. The smell gives you a great preview of how strong the hop flavor is. While the hops are dominant, they are not over powering. The hops are well balanced with the rest of the beer. This is a dark amber colored beer.

I drank this beer on tap, but also brought home a growler. I thought the beer was great at the brew pub, but I'm not sure that I would recommend a growler. Like most beers in growlers, after opening and pouring my first glass, the beer began to lose carbonation. That really seemed to affect the flavor and experience of this beer more so than with some other beers from a growler.

Poured a hazy dark amber/copper color with thick creamy eggshell colored head, ok retention and nice lacing. Smells of peppermint, citrus, and pine with a brown sugary maltiness. Tastes of grapefruit up front with a nice solid caramel malty backbone and a great pine finish mixed with some grassy tones. Medium in body with nice carbonation, smooth with a big bitter pine tree bite to it. One of my favorites from SGBC, happy to see they're able to make larger batches of it so it can be enjoyed for longer.

This was a lovely growler I received in the March Growlin at the Moon BIF. I was stoked as I had never had anything from the brewery and I love IPA's so this was gonna be fun. Had it in my fridges for a couple days before opening but decided to pop it last night. Very nice and very dark amber in color. Extremely hazy and cloudy as well, though no sediment or floaties were visible. A huge two finger high head of white foam then rose up over the top of it and stayed for what seemed loke forever before relenting down to a thin pillow of white and more then adequate side glass lace.

The aroma had to be one of the bigggest pine hop bombs I have ever tried. Just loads of rich thick resin like smell coming off of this. A touch of malty sugar tries to break through, but this is a hop bomb. Slight smell of alcohol at first as well. The flavor was wonderful, utterly perfect for the style. Thick sticky medium bodied ale that literally was so thick with hop resin it coated your teeth. This was a monster. Some light sweet sugar cashing in the middle, but overall really just a full on flavor explosion of resin. Great super bitter dry finish that really just seeled the deal for me. Long drawn out hop flavor, this was just that good for me. The alcohol was not too hight, though it was noticeable and I was able to finish the growler in a night, thought it was a bit pushing it towards the end.

Overall I would say this is one of the single best IPAs I have ever had. I t was just a hop monster from start to finish with a rich feel and flavor that I really could not tire of. I would have to recommend this one to anyone who loves IPA's.

a: This one was a slightly hazey reddiesh copper color. It poured with a smallish white head that left lots of lace in it's wake.

s: This smells strongly of simple syrup and has a big pine forest hop presence. Smells very fresh!

t: Wow, this borders on a DIPA! It has a big malt backbone that tastes of slightly sour caramel. As the smell would suggest, this has a massive, dry piney hop finish.

m: The body has a nice oily, sticky quality.

d: Fresh tasting and difficult to stop drinking.

A-Wonderful deep amber/copper with a thick off-white head that left significant lacing in the way down.

S-Pin tree in a pint glass. This one is serious with the piney hops. A bit of malty sweetness is also present.

T-A true pine hop bomb that is well balancd by some strong caramel maltiness. A wonderful finish with an interesting spiciness in the background.

M-Very nice feel with a certain amount of tongue prickling. Very nice bodied IPA.

D-Fantastic...an all-nighter for me. This is THE IPA I wait for each year from SGB. Changes a little every year and this years, 2007, may be the best ever. A truly world-class IPA that is available only in tiny, little, sleepy Selinsgrove!

A growler filled today at the brewery. Thanks to Carolyn and Deuane for delivering it.

A: The IPA is much darker than most, a dark brown color that reveals bright marmalade orange highlights near the base of the cup. A finger of head came off of the first pour and has clung closely to the sides.

S: The aroma is deliciously hoppy, full of pine needles and caramel malt. The intensity of the hops defies comparison, a Christmas tree in a growler. This is absolutely perfect.

T: The first sip reveals a whole world of flavors, covering the malts, hops and spices that are needed for an excellent beer. Caramel malts start the beer off, building a sweet grainy taste that allows everything else to build off of it. The pine needle hops are thick and focused, full of resiny oils that linger on the tongue. Some alcoholic burn appears mid-sip and the ale could use a bit more carbonation to jump off of the palate. Beyond those two complaints, this is pretty much perfect.

M: The caramel and pine play quite nicely together, creating a deep flavor that never subsides.

D: If not for the late hour that I got the growler at, I'd finish it off tonight. As it is, this one'll last until tomorrow. This beer is worth the trip to the sleepy little burgh of Selinsgrove.
