Updated: 9/8/09 I initially visited and reviewed this location just after it opened. After several additional visits I will note two things which have changed my score slightly.
First, the positive. On each visit I have been approached on several occasions by several employees asking to provide assistance. Each time the individual has been helpful and well-informed (even if not completely geeky).
The negative is that with a selection this big, it is a simple fact that there are offerings that do not move well. The store seems to do well with getting obviously old seasonal beers out of stock when their time has passed, but some slow-moving year-round selections and one-off brews seem to be sitting longer than I'd prefer.
Original review below:
This location is Binny's new flagship store in the South Loop. The beer selection is substantial to say the least, with two huge aisles, a wall of coolers, and a maze of floor stacks. Parking is behind the store in a smallish (maybe 25-30 cars?) covered lot.
Since the store just opened, quality seemed to be very high. I noted no out of code product, and certainly no dust. Everything sampled so far has been in tip top shape. Pricing was very reasonable too.
How does one go about describing a selection this big . . . . Well, there seemed to be just about everything available in the State of Illinois in the store. Big selections of local craft beers, with plenty of Three Floyds, Capital, Two Brothers, Goose Island, etc. including lots of the special releases and seasonals. Plenty of other craft brewers big and small were there as well, with more Dogfish Head special beers than I've ever seen.
The import section was extremely thorough as well, with the German and Belgian selections being particularly notable. Honestly, it's difficult to find any fault with the selection apart from the fact that it's so huge that even in a store this big there simply isn't room for a lot of each beer on the shelf. There were several holes, but the staff was more than happy to check in back for more.
I've left some headroom to see how they manage freshness and selection over time, but this store is off to a great start.
