On my recent vacation to OB our bungalow was right around the corner from this awesome little neighborhood gem.
I walked in and could tell that the owners of this store cared about quality. There were locally baked fresh breads and a nice assortment of good cheeses (Humboldt Fog!), and plenty of other gourmet condiments all along the aisles.
The beer selection was amazing. I found 3 kinds of beers from Midnight Sun, which I have never seen in So Cal before. There was also plenty of San Diego brewerys represented like Stone, Green Flash, Lost Abbey, Alesmith, and others. I also found beers from Pretty Things, De Struise, The Bruery, and Stillwater. I ended up picking up a Pannepot '10 and a Sockeye Red IPA from Midnight Sun.
Since there will be atleast two more trips to San Diego before the year is over I will be returning to this store alot more frequently.

Well, I travelled here just the other day armed with quite the list of beers I can't find in my home state of Missouri. Walked through the door and was surprised by a friendly staff that was kind of excited to have "travellers" in search of beers. So after a few minutes of talking turkey I got down to business and found some great selections. The staff were nice and looked through the back for some of my rarer requests. I left there with two large boxes of selections and a silly grin . Knowing that you can find hard to locate beers in a single location was cool. Also the Ocean beach area is kind of a nice throwback to simpler times in life. A really nice vibe relaxed and kind of detached from the bustle of the daily grind .
Pliny the elder was super fresh and scored some great selections from Alesmith, Maui brewing and too many others to mention.
Long of the short. Great place that will make you smile and a great staff to help out the beer nerd on a quest.

Been in here a few times and I feel like a kid in a cool candy store. They have a little of everything and sometimes stocked with hard to find gems. Always looking forward to coming back. When the owner is there he is always out to help out and answer questions. Fresh Pliney is nice and usually have it in stock, and it is fresh so that's a bonus. They have their beers stocked up in a cooler and usually keep a nice rack with limited releases that will go quick. When in San Diego check this place out...you will be happy.

Came down on a tour of San Diego brewing, heard good things about this place - wasn't disappointed in the slightest. I wasn't able to try the tasting room because I was driving, but from the blog they keep updated, the beers would be fun to try and 10% off would be the cherry on top.
All the local faves are here, over half the beers chilling in coolers. Always a great sign. Even found a few ones that had eluded me, including the Alaskan Barleywine (at a fair price, nonetheless). Stone, Lightning, Iron Fist, AleSmith, plus others from around the world. Easy to spend half hour or so just browsing.
At the cashier, spent some time talking with the guy about the purchases, including a HaandBryggiet Porter aged in Aquavit barrels. He knows his stuff, and if you're looking to get into some craft beers, he would definitely steer you in the right direction.

This place rocks! For as small as it is, it packs a pretty good punch in terms of experience. Not only are there fantastic beers to choose from, but they also have a tasting room in the back with very good flights of beers to choose from. Also, you get a 10% off your store beer purchase with any flights you buy from the back. so its a good relaxing experience. also during beer week last year, they put a couple of one-off beers out randomly and people were able to get beers that are simply not normally available in san diego.

A: Great deli/convenience store atmosphere. Always clean. Does not feel like your corner liquor store.
Q: This is the first store I've been to that has 99% of the beer that needs to stay fresh is within the fridges. I never worry about quality when I buy here, especially because the majority of the beers fly off the shelves pretty quickly and so if I see it there, I know it hasn't been there that long.
Service: Every time I go in, someone is more than willing to help me find beers or make good recommendations. Even when I'm checking out, 9 times out of 10, the cashier will have some knowledge of the beers I purchase. That to me is pretty amazing.
Selection: The selection is amazing to excellent, the only problem is the selection is also well known and the new selections or Alpine beers will go very fast.
Value: They have great prices, especially on the San Diego specific beers.

I love this place, especially with the relatively new tasting room. The selection is great. Mike (the beer guy) is very friendly and helpful. Some of the other staff are very helpful too. The selection is a nice range; locals, cali, belgians (including a good number of sours), American wilds, english and german brews. The price might be slightly higher than other places, however if you get anything in the tasting room you get 10% off your entire beer purchase, which makes the beer well priced. You can also get cheese & meat plates in the tasting room, and there is a full deli (closes at 6pm).

I have always been fond of Olive Tree, previously a small "locals" market in OB that offers high quality deli items and is nice change of pace from the dingy beach liquor stores and markets with sub-par food and products.
Olive Tree expanded to offer craft beers and they recently opened a Tasting Room and have really knocked it out of the park. They have a great selection of the better craft beers good enough for any beer geek, as well as a good group of Alpine beers that are hard to find around San Diego. I think if you had to pick one negative for the place it is that it is simply too small to offer a huge BevMo-like amount of beers.
If you need help the entire staff is very friendly and willing to assist. The go-to guy for beer is named Mike, be sure to ask for him if you need something. He won't follow you around and try to get you to buy 10 bottles of stuff you aren't interested in. He won't try to force a bunch of old stale beers on you or try to convince you to drink the latest over-priced over-hyped beer. Thankfully this isn't one of those places that makes you feel like you are buying a used car. Care is also given to the proper storage of the beer, i.e. IPAs are kept in the cold box, not sitting out in a 90 degree store.
Olive Tree added a small Tasting Room that is awesome, a nice selection for every taste and a great addition to the experience. Who doesn't love tasting some great beers during Beer Shopping Day(s)??? They recently added a meat&cheese platter to the tasting room, hoping to try it out soon.
A fantastic store, if you are looking for hard-to-find bottles during your trip to San Diego make Olive Tree your number one stop.

One of the top bottle shops in San Diego proper. Very good selection of San Diego and West Coast craft beers, both year-round, seasonal, and special releases. Good prices. Some single bottles are available to mix-and-match. They publish new arrivals on their frequently updated website and blog. Dedicated parking lot in back. Sandwiches from the deli are delicious.
Their tasting room is open Thursday through Saturday; very reasonably priced; tasting menu rotates frequently so repeat visits are rewarded; very cool that they now have plates of cheeses/meats to go with the tastings. Mike, the guy in charge, is very knowledgeable, super nice guy, and a regular in the SD beer scene.
Loses some points for how quickly the more popular releases leave the shelves (e.g., Pliny, Sculpin).
Pro tips: 5% discount on beer by joining beer club ($20/year); 10% discount on beer when you pay for a tasting (keep your receipt to bring to the register). Check the website before going for new arrivals.

I was a bit intrigued by the love for this little corner of the world. So when visiting the neighborhood I thought I'd give a second visit after dropping in a year ago or so.
Bottom line is that this is a good market in a small market. O.B. is a relatively small hamlet in the greater San Diego scheme and Olive Tree fits the bill from many fronts. Good beer, and wine, and cheese, and bread, etc. It runs on a small footprint so the beer aspect is somewhat limited by design.
They offer a good mix of beer though the selection is somewhat limited though of high quality. Nice to see a 'new/special releases' rack and a chalkboard showing pending/new arrivals, again for special release brews. Service was not a factor though I sense that locals may have an 'in' in that regard.
Good for special release brews or a local hookup, otherwise I'm a bit at a loss as you are paying a bit of a premium here. They do offer some beers as singles however, nice concept. Good neighborhood store.
