Draft at Hamilton's in San Diego.

Pours a hazy dark golden orange color with a half finger white head that immediately disappears. Not much in the way of lacing.

Slightly earthy aroma with very muted hop character.  Subtle grass, pine and floral hops with a touch of citrus and lots of alcohol.

Medium bodied with a strong bitter hop presence up front that's quickly countered by tropical fruit and alcohol.  Again, the hops are muted by light fruit and sweet booze.  Hints of apricot,  pineapple, grapefruit and orange peel but it's kind of weak.

On tap at the brewery.

App: Dark gold color. Good head, retention and lace are both strong.

Smell: Sweet, bitter, citrusy. Booze pops out on the back end. Smells decent but it’s a warning this one will be too heavy on the malt and fusel alcohol.

Taste: Pretty much par for the course west coast style DIPA, with a lot of citrusy hoppiness, grapefruit, orange and pineapple flavors as well as piney notes, but sweeter and maltier than I would prefer and the booze is way too noticeable and in your face for me. Boozy sugar cookie taste mixed with big, bitter hops that don’t quite pack enough of a flavor punch. In other words, everything’s in there but it just doesn’t combine all that well.

Mf: Not too bad, very full with medium to low carbonation and a creamy, sticky chewiness. Maybe a bit overly full in combination with the assertive maltiness; feels like a bit of a chore to drink.

Overall: I thought this one was a little clumsy. The bartender poured and watched me to see how blown away I was and all I could manage was a weak smile. Just heavy handed on the booze and a bit of a mess. With so many truly exceptional IPAs and DIPAs in the immediate vicinity you better be great to stand out and this one just doesn’t. Not to say this is a terrible beer by any stretch, it’s just average at best in a land of knockout examples of the style.

Initially I thought this was a so-so dipa, it was much better as this warmed, on tap at The Blue Tusk. Sweeter initially before bitterness builds up. Drying finish. Very fresh. Great thick lace, that slid from the generous retained head. A fun drinking experience.

on tap at devils den in philly

Pours a clouded golden orange color with a thick layer of white head. Plenty of lacing left around the glass, retains pretty well with some cloudy film.

Grapefruit hoppiness in the nose with plenty of bitterness. Bready and caramel notes with a spike of booze.

Nice bitterness up front, grapefruit hops drive the flavor. Rind and some touches of orange, decent citrus quality. Bready malt is layered beneath. Some piny bitterness towards the finish with alcohol heat.

Medium body, decent carbonation, prickly and sticky on the tongue. An alright DIPA, but nothing particularly special.

Enjoyed on tap at the Mission Brewery in downtown San Diego.

A - Medium to dark amber colour with a small amount of bubbly white head.

S - Citrus, pine and some noticeable malt sweetness.

M - Medium body with a nice chew. Light carbonation.

T - Well balanced. Bitter citrus hops and sweet caramel malts. Sweetness is most evident in the finish. 4

On tap at Townhouse Kitchen & Bar in Sherman Oaks, CA.

Pours a clear amber color with a 1 inch white head that fades to a small cap. Thin rings of lace form on the glass on the drink down. Smells of citrus zest, pine, and grapefruit juice. A very subtle malt smell too. Taste is pretty much the same with some citrus zest and pine hops, grapefruit juice, and sweet malt on the finish. Mild bitterness lingers on the palate on the drink down. This beer has a medium body with a smooth and slightly chewy mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good DIPA and my first beer from Mission. I would get this one again most likely.

Hazy brownish-orange in color with a respectable beige foam to start. Head reduced to a light ring of foam with a bit of lacing. Pine and floral hop aromas are dominant with a bit of citrus orange and sweet maltiness. Viscous, oily feel with very light carbonation. Floral and pine hop flavors up front with citrus orange in the middle. Firm, sweet malty backbone from beginning to end, moreso than most DIPAs I've experienced. Finishes with a lighly bitter aftertaste. Nicely masks the higher abv. A decent DIPA.

On at Mad Mex during happy hora, so it didn't kill my pocket book. Drinks nice, just super malty for a DIPA. Definitely not your typical West Coast DIPA. Which actually worked for this beer, usually I like the West Coast DIPA to take the enamel off of my teeth with hops but in this case. I'm alright with a deep orange russet body pouring with a thick beige head, fine even layer lacing. Nose is full of citrus/floral notes very nice expressive finishing hops here. Starts out agressive with citrus/floral notes but as the malts surround the hops the flavor fades into a well balanced high alcohol IPA. Drank pretty effortlessly, was I expecting more hop bitterness and flavor of course, but I wasn't disappointed by it. Mouthfeel is full to medium bodied with a nice flowing carbonation going strong. Overall experience less hops than expected from a West Coast DIPA but it didn't harm the overall enjoyment level this beer had to offer.

On tap at URGE.

A: A pleasant dark orange with good clarity. White head is frothy and leaves scattered lacing.

S: Big caramel malt presence with notes of bread, orange, and grapefruit. Moderately bitter with a lower moderate sweetness. Slightly sugary. Gives the impression of balance, though perhaps the scale tilts in the favor of malt.

T: Orange flesh with a strong caramel malt base balancing it out. Grapefruit emerges midpalate with an apparent rind component. Tastes more like an American Barleywine than a Double IPA. Booze is well masked. Caramel really emerges as the beer warms up. Increased booze presence in the caramel citrus finish.

M: Lower medium in body with upper moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is sticky and creamy. 

Overall: This is not how I like my Double IPAs, but it wouldn't be a bad American Barleywine.

A-Deep garnet with golden highlights. A thick off-white head slowly reduced to a thin cap and left copious swaths of lace.

S-Deeply rich but muted malt sweetness with some telltale American grown C type hops poking through the malt layer. Touch of alcohol burn finishes this one off.

T-A big and burly malt bruiser with spicy citrus hop notes struggling to make themselves known. Not what I typically look for in a DIPA. Good, yes. Great, no. Warming alcohol makes an appearance in the finish.

M-Medium-heavy body, this one is a quite the heavyweight of DIPA's without being overly sweet or sticky. I like the feel as it makes you feel like you are drinking a beer with pendulous BALLS!

D-I liked it to an extent but the more I drank the more weary I became with it. A decent beer for sure but it simply brings too much for me to enjoy in a DIPA. If this were a RIS I might think differently but it's not so....

On tap at the TDR hopfest event the other day.

The beer pours an amber copper color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is sweet and a bit spicey, but with some noticeable tobacco, earth and dry citrus. On the palate, this IPA is definitely on the sweet side, something I find a bit unusual in a West Coast IPA. However, there the beer has a considerable bitter finish, which helps to counter that sweetness to some extent. Mouthfeel is fairly light, which surprised me given the abv. The finish is long and bitter, though ultimately the flavor profile is still dominated by the sweet malt. Drinkability is pretty good, with the alcohol well disguised and integrated into the flavor profile.

Nothing extraordinary here, but I thought this nevertheless to be a pretty solid beer.

On tap at the hulmeville in.

A- comes to me with a good finger or off white head the settles slowly leaving a nice spray of lace all over the glass. Burnt orange in color with a touch of haze.

S- fruity and sweet like a cream sickle. Oranges and sweet slightly roasty malts.

T- malty sweet and boldly hopped. Cloyingly sweet. Oranges and a hint of grapefruit. Loads of caramel malts. Hint of herbal earthiness.

M- well above medium in body and a mid level carb.

D- its a east coast ipa from the west coast crazy stuff. Solid but a bit sweet for my tastes.

First batch of this stuff, had from the tap!

A: Copper amber in color topped with a bone white head... nice carbonation, lots of bubbles.

S: Interesting combo of herbal notes and stone fruit, notably Apricot. Some pine comes through as well. Caramel notes as well as some orange peel follow the pack.

T: wow great stuff! Apricot shines through! In place of what usually is a citrus peel quality is a stone fruit quality. Love it. Still tons of bitterness to keep things lively. The high ABV is hidden quite well.

M: carbonic tang levels

D: pretty damn high given the abv

On tap at the Hulmeville Inn inside a pint glass.

A- Dark bronze with a off white billowy head that left some stick. From the looks of it, this is unfiltered to the max, cant really see through it.

S- Very malty for a DIPA, they kind of drown out the hops but they also make a appearance. Grapefruit, slight pine, candy, sweet sugar, alcohol, kind of all over the place.

T- This is a sweet DIPA, more sweet than hoppy, but I think the mix here makes for a good beer. First up a sweet sugar blast with some alcohol followed out by some grapefruit from the hopping. Starts sweet, gets kinda hoppy, goes back to sweet. Not very floral and there is a touch of pine in the end.

M- A smooth above medium body with not much bittering appeal. The sweets win the game here. Shipwrecked is properly carbed up. Not hot but the taste of alcohol does stick around for a few.

D- I enjoyed it and would have again. A sweet DIPA from the west coast, This tastes like something made back east, maybe we are rubbing off on the left coast for once. This is not offensive and great beer, i like it.

pours strong gold. Decent amount of carbonation to be seen. Light Head with some lacing being left on the glass.

The smell is very light, not a lot to speak of. Which is misleading becuase the taste is pretty strong.

This is a very well balnced IIpa. A good amount of citrus and malt hit the mouth at the beginning. Then the citrus takes over and covers the mouth. And finishes with a nice hop and sweet finish. Not overly bitter by any means but just right.

On tap @ The Toronado (San Diego, CA) on 3/22/10. Served in a pint glass.

Pours a clear copper, with a thin covering of bright-white creamy head. There's a moderate richness to the retention and lacing. Decent little look here. The aroma has some hops going on with it, with some floral notes, pine, and some light pine. However this very sweet overall in the nose, with a muddled mix of sticky fruit and malts. Very sweet here...

The taste is the same, with a LOT of deep sweetness to it from tropical fruits and bready caramel character. The hops only really come out in the back, with pine, spice, and a bit of an off-putting earthy grittiness in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a nice firm mouth-filling creaminess to the carbonation. To it's credit, this really isn't showing much alcohol and the feel here is probably the best part of the beer.

Just way too much sweetness here for a DIPA, with more hops needed at the forefront of the profile. I've had a couple of different beers now from Mission and this wasn't one of the better ones.

On-tap at Blue Palms

A: The pour is amber in color with plenty of white head sitting on top.

S: The hop notes in this beer are very fruity and sweet. A lot of grapefruit combines with some tropical fruits like mango and pineapple. The sweetness is helped along by ample amounts of malt.

T: This starts off a bit malty for my tastes, but the hops help it to recover offering up some grapefruit and pineapple notes, along with a moderate bitterness.

M: Shipwreck is medium bodied with a moderate level of carbonation.

D: This was just a touch too sweet for me, and that's not what I look for in my IPAs. I would look for other options before having this one again, but it wouldn't be my last resort.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours a nice amber with a firm white head, nice full lace as to be expected with a DIPA.

S: Great tropical fruit nose, pineapple and mango perhaps there's Simcoe in there methinks.

T: Sweet bready malt off the bat, much more malt than I would have expected out of San Diego. Good hop flavour of grapefruit and pineapple, if a little earthy on the back end which was not to my liking.

M: Smooth and creamy. Soft carbonation makes for an easy drinker.

D: This is an OK DIPA, nothing special. Servicable, but not something I'll go back to.

A: Light copper color, slightly hazy. Pours with half to one finger head that dissipates quickly. Leaves very little lacing in my glass.

S: Lots going on in there. Smells a bit dank and hoppy from the start (maybe some grapefruit fruity as well?), but I also get some bready malts in there.

T: Starts hoppy, and finishes hoppy. There's a milt bready malt throughout the whole taste, but it seems to start with spicy hops (and maybe some really mild sour fruits) and finishes with more earthy bitter hops. Mission's website lists it at 75 IBU, and it tastes at least that. Tastes a bit boozy at 9.25% abv.

M: A bit thicker and slower. A full mouthfeel, which is probably what you want out of a double. Carbonation is very good.

O: Decent brew. If I could get my homebrews this hoppy and light-colored, I'd be ecstatic. That said, the hop-profile just isn't my gig; I'm not a huge fan of the spicy start. Someone out there will love it though.

Picked up a single at Total WIne at the end of March for $2.99.

Beer poured a murky orange with not much head.

Nose is muted hops.

Taste is not bad but a bit uneven. Sweet malts and pine and citrus hops are present but without much continuity. Alcohol is warming in the finish with each sip. Suspect i have an old bottle but no way to tell without a freshness date.

Mouthfeel is full, smooth, and satisfying.

Overall a decent beer but in a style with many outstanding beers i am not sure i will buy this again.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Cigar City pint glass.

A: Deep copper color, nearly clear. A big burst of carbonation with a good size white head directly after the pour, but both quickly subside.

S: Resin, pine, more subdued grapefruit with a good amount of sweet bready malts and mild caramel aspects.

T: Resin and pine bitter, maybe some citrus pith hops up front. The malt sweetness comes back nicely and they both fade together after the swallow, with the hop bitterness lasting a bit longer.

M: Medium body for style, lower carbonation than most, alcohol noticeable but well-masked for this ABV.

O: Pretty unobjectionable, but pretty forgettable at the same time. It strikes me as a good exemplar of the new "average" for American DIPAs. The aroma could use some help - pretty low on the nose for a DIPA. I'm not going out to buy a 4-pack (or 6, or whatever they come in), but I wouldn't mind drinking some on tap somewhere if it's what they had.

a little bit of a different take on the most overproduced style of beer on the market these days (surpassing the annoying middle of the road American saisons, a welcomed, if underwhelming, switcheroo). this one pours a lighter than copper red tinted color, clear for the most part, with a frothed up milky white head a finger or so high, maybe two, and fine retention. the nose is sort of cinnamon spiced, a bizarre characteristic for a big ipa, but its got my interest up. an oily hop profile, flirting with fruity, and a lot of alcohol, fusel heavy and I already know this is going to be a slow bottle. the flavor is not spiced at all, but more resiny, not hop resin per se, but almost like resin from my one hitter, sort of charred and sweet and bitter and more like something leftover, a byproduct, than something I want to consume first hand. this doesn't taste bad at all, but is certainly unique in that way. the alcohol is also very robust, more so than I really care for, as it dominates any interesting hop subtleties that I might otherwise be digging on. there is some malt balance, and a moment of clarity right before the swallow as the bitterness sets in, but the booze is just too much to overcome. fuller body, decent carbonation, not something im really getting off on, but my local shop just got a bunch of their stuff in, and this is good enough to make me want to check it out...

Poured from 12oz bottle into Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours an amber color with a gold tint and a large, creamy off-white head that dissipates very slowly and leaves behind tiny spots of lace.

Smell: Sweet and bready with a couch of caramel malt. This being a double IPA, the hops are what should come through but the hop aromas seem surprisingly subtle for the style- citric and melon notes with a touch of pine.

Taste: Begins with a blood orange sweet citrus, rounding out to bready malt before finishing with sweet melon backed up by a toasty flavor alongside woody bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with light carbonation and a slick finish.

Overall: Not the best DIPA out there, but probably not the worst, either. This is a good DIPA to have if you're looking for something a bit less aggressive than normally had.

Picked this up at Top Hops recently, having never tried this before. I get a bit leery at any beer with "double" in the title since there are so many that are in the arms race of strength, hops, and booze these days and this one was no exception to that. Yes, this was strong and somewhat hoppy but not enough stood out about this to me to be memorable or to distinguish it from all of the other IPA's and double IPA's currently on the shelf.

The pour to this was the best aspect of this beer - it was a somewhat deep apricot, with a good head and near-opaque hue to it that felt like a dark amber, in a physical sense. Lots of booze in the nose, followed by pine, orange, rind, and some earthiness in the nose. None of them stood out in particular and the mouthfeel was just a bit watery as well. There was a lot of dry-hoppiness in the back but nothing burning or tropical. Instead, what was here was a somewhat typical double IPA that only showed it's strength in the aftertaste, once the alcohol completely kicked in.

Yes, this was strong but a bit deceptive at the same time. I could taste the booze but it never felt like 9.25% until I finished this off. While this wasn't a particularly bad beer, it just didn't stand out from everything else out there that's also on this level. Certainly fine for a bottle but like the beer itself, there's not much to hold onto once this fully goes down.

Seved cold into an imperial pint glass.

Mission's Shipwrecked is a amber orange color with thick white head and nice sticky lacing.

Aroma is hoppy but not overly citrusy or fresh smelling. It's still pleasant but not especially dry-hopped.

Flavor is nice and bitter with good hop taste. Very strong but not totally out of balance.

Medium bodied and well carbonated.

Overall a solid DIPA.
