look: 4 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 4 | overall: 4
Appearance: Pours a clear, golden-orange body with a tall, off-white head depositing scattershot lace blots on the descent.
Smell: Pale malts with some sweet-scented sugar-encrusted hints to it beneath the resinous hops scented of orange and a bit of lemon.
Taste: Sweetish, sugary elements from the cookie-hinting, pale maltiness. Flutter of apricot fruitiness, then a hearty dose of citrus followed by a bit of resinous pine. Moderate bitterness. Dry, bitter, citrus-accented finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.
Overall: It's decent enough, but doesn't really embody a truly magical, memorable experience. I mean, I did drink it, sure, but hold a bottle in front of me a year from now and I'll probably say "who??"

I picked this up at Monument Wines and Spirits a few days ago.
Appearance- coppery golden color, thin head
Smell- floral, citrus, and piney hops
Taste- pretty well balanced, citrus hops, bitter in the middle and finish
Mouthfeel- medium bodied
Drinkability- I thought it was very good. I would love to go get some more.

Pours that reddish-amber that in a DIPA immediately makes you suspect much malty sweetness - small head, lacing streaks down the side of the glass. Strong aroma of hops.
First taste: Sweet, caramel maltiness followed immediately by bitter, piney hops. Then the hops grows slightly more bitter and leaves that flat taste lingering on your tongue at the end.
The sweetness is nice, but far too much bitterness to make this a decent choice. Still, it's drinkable, which I suppose is not a ringing endorsement.

Hazy orange with a scant single finger of slightly off-white head. A few rings of lace.
Weak grapefruit and slight cattiness. Some esters and slight alcohol, no real malt, though, and something reminds me of blue cheese.
Bitter, boozy, blah malts, and not much in the way of hops. Some grapefruit, but not much else.
Could use some more carbonation, a little syrupy.
There are any number of better, readily available DIPAs on the market.

12 oz. bottle poured into a pint glass.
Appearance - Dull golden body that's pretty clear. A little bit of a head and a little bit of lacing. The color of it is kinda dreary.
Smell - Not very aromatic. I had a sniff of a Pliny before sniffing this, though, so that might explain why it smelled like almost nothing. What I did get was some pine hops and a bit of sweetness.
Taste - Dominated by hops. Not very citrusy. Earthy and pine hops with a bit of sweetness from the malt. After that it's all bitterness. Very bitter finish.
Mouthfeel - Medium carbonation and a hefty body. The finish kills it. It's so bitter.
Overall - Hoppy, but in the wrong end to be a good DIPA. No problem drinking it, but it wasn't memorable.

An amber colored brew with honey high lights.
There is a slight haze.A smallish white head on top fades to surface layer but is maintained throug out the drink.
Aroma is a balanced aroma of strong hop bouquet of a floral nature and malts are mostly sweet and pale.
An aggressively hopped beer here, overwelmingly hoppy. Poor malts they have an uphill battle on there hands. malts are pale and sweet tasting but are very over matched here.
Very bitter tasting into the aftertaste.
A very hoppy brew here so much so that the hoppy bitterness overwelms everything it comes into contact with.
Not a bad tasting beer here and if your a hop head this beer is for you. This beer is not for me since I like hoppy beers that are more about hop flavor then bitterness.

12 oz.
Pours a deep clear honey gold, minimal sudsy white head retains as a lacing.
Smells of rich caramel and strong pine hops.
Tastes honey sweet with a bit of caramel and apple, followed by some potent pine hop that is bitter, but not overly so.
Smooth and thick with a syrupy feel, a slight sting of carbonation on the tip of the tongue.
Delicious wonderful IPA, among the better ones I've had in the imperial style for sure. IPA fans won't want to miss this. Hides its strength well, but not completely. Very enjoyable brew.

My first Mission beer. Might as well be one of my favorite styles.
Pretty much your quintessential Double IPA in looks, with a long-lasting, creamy dirty-white head; thick foam sticking to the sides of the glass with the slightest tilt; reddish-copper sunset color; lots of bubbles racing up to meet the undying head.
Ooh...the aroma promises my kind of DIPA: citrusy, candy-like sweetness, generous toffee-like malt backup, pine resin. Pretty full-on "big hoppy beer" type nose, and I'm hoping it impresses the taste buds as much as it does the nostrils...
Lots of impressions on the tongue, that's for sure. Sweet cherries; grapefruit/orange zest; leafy green bitterness; fruit-flavored pipe tobacco; peach; papaya; strongly-steeped herbal tea; pineapple. Bitterness pervades just a smidgen over all else, which is nice, but keeps it a very slow-sipping "whoa, take it easy" kind of beer. Overall fruity sweet, hoppy (of course) and with a little more malt backup than others of this style.
Round and full in the mouth, a creaminess tries to dominate but is held in check by a bubbly carbonated tickle. A bit sticky too, which helps keep that bitter "west coast-type" hoppiness going a long time...
I should have never looked at the overall score here (as of this writing, just a "B") because I've been agonizing about it, like, "what's not to like?" "Do I not know my beer?" "This is great a Double IPA, WTF?" "Are you all nuts?" But whatever, to each their own. Lemme turn that "WTF?" into "FTW!"

A-dark amber with a sticky white head. some lacing
S-very sweet citrusy hops and even a touch of alcohol. good strength. smells almost oak aged.
T-comes in with fresh citrusy hops that really stick to the mouth. they definitely have a nice sweetness to them. its a sweetness that lasts and stays into a good long lasting after-taste. the bitterness hesitates before kicking in, but its fairly subtle anyway. still pretty decent.
M-medium dry carbonation with a pretty dry finish
O-it goes down quite easily and quickly. its definitely a good IPA for hopheads to try. i would suggest it others to try. though its not completely unique or original.

22 oz capped bottle poured into a Bruery tulip glass.
A: The beer poured a hazy amber with a huge off white fluffy 3 finger head which left a nice sticky lacing on the glass.
N: The nose was light and pleasant with hints of grapefruit and other citrus fruits leaning to the sweet side.
T: The taste started off with sweetness from the malts and then quickly switched to bitterness of grapefruit rinds and ended very dry with a not so pleasant lingering aftertaste.
M: It had a nice medium mouthfeel with a nice pleasant carbonation level.
D&O: The drinkability was only OK due to the aftertaste which was very dry and bitter, but in a peculiar way. The alcohol level of 9.25% was very nicely hidden and added a pleasant warmth to this brew.
There are too many very good double IPA in the market that I would much rather drink, so this brew will not get a second chance from me.

Sadly, the last of the bottles from my Scot care package from San Diego. Man, was this fun. Hat’s off to my new friend in Cali.
Shared this bottle with my Father-In-Law as he loved IPA’s/DPA’s.
Slightly hazy, dull amber color. Thick head sits atop the beer. Slight lacing.
Aroma is certainly citrus focused. Also a pretty good amount of sweetness.
Decent, frankly... not great. Is this an east coast beast lost on the west coast? Pretty balanced and fairly sweet. Hops are a little muted. Made worse since I saved this for last since it’s a DPA. 2 previous standard IPA’s were much more hop focused and appeared to be bigger beers.
Slightly sticky. Just below creamy.
Not one I would chase.. But as I often say. Glad to have tried it.

A: Pours a beautiful amber color with a small head that dissipates quickly. Moderately heavy carbonation.
N: Toffee, pine, citrus and rye.
T: Pine and toffee upfront followed by candy sugar, orange citrus and pine. Leaves a rye tasting linger.
M: Fulll bodied, somewhat sticky and dry.
O: Alcohol is well hidden. Nicely balanced with a slight bitter bite. A nice DIPA but maybe a little too heavy on the toffee flavors; leads to some strange medicinal flavors.

Bottle from JohnCoctsin. Served in a tulip.
Pours a clear light amber color with a single-finger white head that leaves some nice spotty lacing on the way down. The nose carries plenty of bready malt and some light caramel. Hops? Nope. The flavor is bread and some very light caramel and sweetness. Bread crust is the most apt description. Hops? Nope. Mouthfeel is medium with moderate carbonation. Bitterness? Nope. Three strikes.

Pours quite dark, almost mahogoney in color, with a decent head and some lacing as well. Smells fruity with citrus and slightly spicy. Somewhat simple, but pleasant enough. The taste is a bit strange- slightly smokey, quite malty, and with earthy hops. Doesn't really come together here. A bit grainy in the mouthfeel, and quite spicy and earthy from the hops. Doesn't really strike me as a double IPA, and I wouldn't say this is a beer I'd get again, but it's different.

I picked up a 4-pack of this while on a recent trip to Pittsburgh. Review is from notes taken on 6/8/2011 and poured from the bottle to a pint glass.
Appearance: Pour is a solid coppery color with some lighter, yellowish/gold highlights around the bottom of the glass; starts with a fair head of 1 and 1/2 fingers, that is of an off-white hue; head has decent retention, and becomes rocky and pockmarked as it slowly dwindles to a complete, but uneven, skim; body is pretty clear and shows moderately strong carbonation bubbling up throughout; a few patches of oily and sticky lacing linger on the sides of the glass.
Smell: Lots of interesting and bitter hoppiness that is of grapefruit and pine and a touch of citric fruit rind; actually a fairly strong malty presence in the nose provides a touch of balance, but it's still hop driven as it should be.
Taste: Lots of those bitter hops right up front, and their flavors match those that were mentioned above in the smell; there is a malt backbone, but it is definitely overshadowed by those big hops; strong warming presence of alcohol towards the back, and the bitterness lingers well into the aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Body is medium/light in terms of weight, and the carbonation is smooth and provides just a good touch of prickliness in combination with the near 10% ABV; a thick, moist sticky coating is left on the roof of the mouth; gums and belly are left tingly from the carbonation, slight acidity and ABV.
Overall: I feel that this beer's average rating of a B (at the time of this review) seems a bit low. I think it is closer to a B+/A- overall, and definitely worth picking up. I feel it is a fine example of the style and definitely has that California flair to it with the big and spicy hoppiness.

A- .25 finger head light golden color with bubbles.
S -- Light sweet scent to the beer, not too much aromatics or smell for that much.
T/M - Peppery hop flavor, kind of bitey on its own, and the effervescence adds to it. Very matter of fact as a peppery DIPA.
Overall -- A very pleasant and drinkable DIPA, 9.25% ABV doesn't taste it with some nice pepperyness to it.
PP (Price Point) -- $6.59 for a 22oz bomber, nice quality beer for that price, high enough IBU and hop bite to it.

Poured from a bottle into a Chimay goblet
A- pours dark orange with a one finger slightly offwhite head. Head doesn't stick around for too long, but laces pretty nicely
S- strong citrus aroma. Smells damn lovely, and is pretty pungent...not really searching around for the scent in this one
T- and unfortunately, this is where the goodness of the beer ends. I am tasting next to no hops at all. Just pure nothingness. Wait, there's a very slight bitter finish. That's it. Tastes like water
M- it's THICK, which makes no sense given the lack of hoppiness to it. Thick water = very offputting
O- I thought this was going to be a star after the pour and first whiff of it. Then it really hit the fan. No dating on the bottle, so I have no idea how old this is. A shame, really

A- Orange color, bright with a little bit of haze. very little head retention, left a little white suds around the edges. color is nice, just seems like there's little life to the beer.
S- Some citrus hops and some earthy hops. Not a very strong aroma. Hints of sweet malts behind the hops, reminded me of a very mild english barleywine...almost watered down.
T- Pretty good. Hoppy resins backed up quickly with some malt sweetness. Citrus up front but get quickly deminished by bitter earthy hops. Wasn't a huge fan of the after taste, too much residual bitterness.
M- Wasn't a fan of how this beer drank. At first it is nice, but it quickly turned into a bitter earthy mess with a lot of residual flavor.
Wasn't too stoked on this beer

Look Pours a nice copper color with a 1/2 foam head. Good head retention and a decent amount of lacing as the beer goes down
Smell Fresh hop aromas very nice citrus and piney notes that rush to the forefront, typical of this style
Taste Grapefruit note combined with the sweetness of the malt make give this beer a decent at best flavor. There is a tad bit of bitterness on the back end of the beer and it has a dry finish
Mouthfeel medium body with a decent amount of carbonation. Dry on the palate but it surprising goes down smoothly and the flavors stay consistent throughout
Overall Its a good DIPA and I could enjoy a several in a sitting on a hot day. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys this style but it is not as complex as some others I have had

Pours a bright orange with a chill haze. Soapy froth with bubbling craters. Aroma of fruity pineapple juice, and some pine. Tastes of grape fruity hop, a little earthy and resinous. Fairly well balanced with a light caramel and vague toasted malt flavor. A little fresh grapefruit juice and rind flavor. Provides a long standing bitterness in the finish. Medium bodied feel, carbonation is good, alttle thin. Overall, decent beer, bright hoppy flavors, lots of citrus.

I must say I have walked by this brew many times and finally the wife bought it for me so the time is now. Big tulip glass pour. I am met with a very nice amber colored pour with an off-white foamy head that produces gobs of lacing. The smell has major malt with a slight citrus fruity background. Nothing special here which is a disappointment. The taste is rather dull. A lot of malt and not much else. There is some light grapefruit on the aftertaste but this is a major malt bomb. I prefer my double ipa's to be on the hoppy side and this is just not there. Overall I think is very drinkable but just not my DIPA style. This would be a good brew to introduce someone into the DIPA style without the harsh "grapefruit" kick that is prevalent in many DIPA's.

This beer sold me on the cover art even though the single was 4.00. Cover art is the same without the upper cross.
A - Pour a nice dark amber, darker than most DIPA I have had so kind of a plus. Carbonation is good leaving a half an inch of head with moderate lacing sticking to the sides of my glass.
S - Smell from the bottle neck is a distinct mix of citrus and grapefruit hops. Bitter and piney. In the glass about the same with a solid caramel malt base.
T - Huh? It starts off initially hoppy but the malt quickly takes it away with the sweetness before it sticks to the tongue. Not that it's a bad way to do a DIPA but it kind of takes the "edge" off before you can truly enjoy the hops. Flavor is constant with each sip so it was a well made beer.
M - Except for the semi-burn I get it actually drinks like a regular IPA so it is balanced.
Overall I have mixed feelings on this. It is a well made DIPA with a moderately high ABV that is covered up well and a decent hop profile that is their but fades as you drink. I also have to weigh the price as it is one of the more expensive DIPA's I have purchased but not as satisfying. If your looking for balance give it a try. If looking for a hop bomb go elsewhere.

Still loving the Imperial IPAs. This one pours out of the bottle as a great copper color with orange highlights. The head is a creamy color and leave a pretty good lacing. The aroma is hoppy of course with a nice undertone of citrus, pine and just hint of grainy malt. The taste is bitter and generously hopped for optimum enjoyment. The citrus and pine tingle with every sip. The mouthfeel is medium. Not quite as oily as some Imperials out there but still very good! I'd enjoy this one over and over.

Saw this new DIPA at the local bottleshop and had to give it a whirl being a local.
A: Pours a very clear dark orange color. Almost a burnt copper. Nice 1 finger dense cloudy white head formed. Second pour hit almost three fingers. Sticky lacing down the glass all the way.
S: Picking up lots of sweet honey and biscuit malt notes with an earthy pine and spicey hop aroma. Leads me to believe this is a more malt forward DIPA.
T: Juicy sweet orange fruit and floral hops sort of took me by surprise here. A very nice resinous sticky pine hop bitterness that puckers at the palate. Honey and biscuit malt flavor profile for sure this one falls on the sweeter side. Especially after it settles. Finishes a bit warm and ABV definite on the exhalation.
M: Sticky sweet across the palate but balanced nicely with a solid bitterness that finishes a bit warm.
D: Moderate. A big brew indeed where hops and ABV are both present. Falls on the sweeter side of IPA's and to be honest 2nd pour was not as enjoyable.
Not a bad offering by another SD Brewery. Like I said I was definitely surprised by the IBU's here where I was expecting something much more malt forward going into it. In the end the booziness takes over a bit and knocks this one a bit out of balance but I would probably purchase again.
