A middle of the road mediore dipa, at best. Too many malts and no real hop influence. A nice drinking experience, but as far as all the characteristics I would hope for the style: not much there. I could do without it, as you can see by the numbers on this one.

Straight pour from 22oz pry-off bottle to a tall, straight-mouthed Ommegang flute. No freshness or bottle dating evident, but this was purchase about four weeks ago at a Whole Foods in the Durham, NC area; I’m assuming it’s relatively fresh, but it’s hard to say.

Appearance (4.5): Pours a good three fingers of custard-colored head at first, kind of crackling to a rocky cap that takes its sweet time dying down, leaving some good lacing all around the glass. The body is a moderately hazy, reddish gold color and very pretty. This is a damn good-looking beer, really.

Smell (3.0): There are some nice hops here, kind of a bright citrus of the fruity pineapple-mango variety (rather than crisp, snappy grapefruit and lemon) that’s kind of buried underneath a hefty dose of sweet, slightly oxidized caramel. Gingerbread, brown sugar, apple cake, cider. Not quite enough hops, malt comes on pretty thick but it’s not unpleasant.

Taste (3.5): Good dose of kind of pithy, citric bitterness gives way to that same kind of rich, sweet (but not really cloying) malt character, that’s again mostly caramel but with some drier, less sweet but still rich character of baked goods filling it out. The hops close out on the finish, with a decent earthy hop flavor and grassy-pithy bitterness. No alcohol to speak of on the palate, which is surprising.

Mouthfeel (4.0): Subdued carbonation, slightly tingly and foams modestly on the way down; the body is relatively slick and moderately chewy, definitely on the full side of medium. Not the driest finish, but there’s enough bitterness and levity to invite another sip.

Overall (3.5): This is a decent DIPA. It’s definitely not perfect, but nothing about it is unpleasant. It does, more or less, what a DIPA does, but nothing exceptionally (with the exception of the appearance). Happy to have tried it, but I most likely won’t seek it out in the future.

A: measured my pour into a tulip as I had decided not to include the yeast and sediment from the bottom. Got a slightly hazy pale amber body with a minimal head, off-white in shade.

S: not much of note here, some sweet pale malt smells and hoppy floral notes

T: alcohol overpowered other flavors for me on the first few sips - perhaps I drank it too soon out of the fridge - needed to warm for expected butterscotchy malt flavors and, in this case, sharp pine and subtle resin flavors from the hops

M: astringent on the first few sips, never developed much feel - there was always a slight astringence to offset any smooth coating - even once the beer had warmed - perhaps the damage was done at that point.

O: my most bland scores to-date (300+ reviews as of this entry). For me, not a return-to beer simply because there are so many DIPAs out there that I enjoy that aren't expensive or hard to find. That said, if you're a fan of DIPAs, I'd still say try it anyway. Right?

"Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods."

--Albert Einstein

Perspicuous persimmon with Kruggerand accents and an expansive crown that is midway between eggshell and ecru. The foam has an appealing texture and is doing a bang-up job laying down abstract-patterned lace.

The aroma is classic pale malted and C-hopped American DIPA. Orange zest is at least as prominent as white grapefruit, which might mean that Amarillo is present. Well-masked alcohol is a positive. Less than explosive hoppiness is a negative.

Shipwrecked Double IPA is similar to quite a few other versions of the style. Don't get me wrong, that doesn't make it bad beer. It's just that hops share too much of the flavor spotlight with malt... and warming alcohol has now made an appearance as well.

The malt tastes pretty close to 100% pale. That background sugar cookie sweetness is joined by a large splash of triple sec (orange liqueur) and very small splash of Absolut. Unfortunately, the beer isn't hop *flavor* focused enough for the next highest taste score to be granted. Again, many American DIPAs suffer the same fate.

On a positive note, the mouthfeel finds that sweet spot between too light and too sappy sticky. If the bubbles were softer and the beer was creamier, the drinking would be more enjoyable.

Shipwrecked is of roughly the same quality as the other Mission Brewery beers that I've reviewed. That is, it's clearly better than average, while falling well short of special or memorable. Love the Jolly Roger on the label.

Sadly, the last of the bottles from my Scot care package from San Diego. Man, was this fun. Hat’s off to my new friend in Cali.

Shared this bottle with my Father-In-Law as he loved IPA’s/DPA’s.

Slightly hazy, dull amber color. Thick head sits atop the beer. Slight lacing.

Aroma is certainly citrus focused. Also a pretty good amount of sweetness.

Decent, frankly... not great. Is this an east coast beast lost on the west coast? Pretty balanced and fairly sweet. Hops are a little muted. Made worse since I saved this for last since it’s a DPA. 2 previous standard IPA’s were much more hop focused and appeared to be bigger beers.

Slightly sticky. Just below creamy.

Not one I would chase.. But as I often say. Glad to have tried it.

Served in a CCB snifter.

A: The beer poured a fairly clear amber color, with about a 1/2 finger or so solid white head that retained itself pretty well.

S: Smelled like a fruity, citrusy, cotton candy, without much maltiness at all.

T: This was more on the fruity side than the citrus one, but I did manage to get a tinge of grapefruit, lemongrass, and sugary Jolly Rancher.

M: This was kinda sugary, but I personally didn't find it too offensive. The lacing on the glass was pretty splotchy.

O: This was good, but I expected more from a San Diego brewery.

Picked up a single at Total WIne at the end of March for $2.99.

Beer poured a murky orange with not much head.

Nose is muted hops.

Taste is not bad but a bit uneven. Sweet malts and pine and citrus hops are present but without much continuity. Alcohol is warming in the finish with each sip. Suspect i have an old bottle but no way to tell without a freshness date.

Mouthfeel is full, smooth, and satisfying.

Overall a decent beer but in a style with many outstanding beers i am not sure i will buy this again.

I must say I have walked by this brew many times and finally the wife bought it for me so the time is now. Big tulip glass pour. I am met with a very nice amber colored pour with an off-white foamy head that produces gobs of lacing. The smell has major malt with a slight citrus fruity background. Nothing special here which is a disappointment. The taste is rather dull. A lot of malt and not much else. There is some light grapefruit on the aftertaste but this is a major malt bomb. I prefer my double ipa's to be on the hoppy side and this is just not there. Overall I think is very drinkable but just not my DIPA style. This would be a good brew to introduce someone into the DIPA style without the harsh "grapefruit" kick that is prevalent in many DIPA's.

A: Pours a beautiful amber color with a small head that dissipates quickly. Moderately heavy carbonation.

N: Toffee, pine, citrus and rye.

T: Pine and toffee upfront followed by candy sugar, orange citrus and pine. Leaves a rye tasting linger.

M: Fulll bodied, somewhat sticky and dry.

O: Alcohol is well hidden. Nicely balanced with a slight bitter bite. A nice DIPA but maybe a little too heavy on the toffee flavors; leads to some strange medicinal flavors.

A-dark amber with a sticky white head. some lacing

S-very sweet citrusy hops and even a touch of alcohol. good strength. smells almost oak aged.

T-comes in with fresh citrusy hops that really stick to the mouth. they definitely have a nice sweetness to them. its a sweetness that lasts and stays into a good long lasting after-taste. the bitterness hesitates before kicking in, but its fairly subtle anyway. still pretty decent.

M-medium dry carbonation with a pretty dry finish

O-it goes down quite easily and quickly. its definitely a good IPA for hopheads to try. i would suggest it others to try. though its not completely unique or original.

S: A lot of citrus and pine notes up front, the grapefruit is pretty over powering as well, the malts and hops come through at the tail end.

T: Strong hop presence and bitterness up front, notes of PINEapple and grapefruit and good amount of hops and malts.

M: Medium bodied and mid carbonation.

Poured into a snifter.

A: Slightly hazy amber with two-finger, off-white, creamy head that lasted several minutes and left a nice film. Great lacing.

S: Pineapple and citrus. Hops. Mild.

T: Moderate sweetness and solid hop bitterness. Not too much pineapple in the taste. More bitter hops and a sort of toasty malt. A hint of alcohol.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Slightly dry.

O: I was disappointing by the nose and taste of this double IPA. A bit mild and bland which doesn't complement the hop bitterness too well. Also, the slight taste of alcohol was not good.

Pours a translucent amber with a thick, off-white head that quickly dissipates. More lacing than your average DIPA. Aromas of pine needles, bread, biscuity malts and citrus fruits. Maltier than your average DIPA. The first sip is sweet, with sweeping notes of caramel and vanilla. A dense layer of piney hops pushes through the malt sweetness, followed closely by dry bittering hops. The finish is earthy and sweet. Very nice mouthfeel. Medium bodied, with lively carbonation.

Hazy brownish-orange in color with a respectable beige foam to start. Head reduced to a light ring of foam with a bit of lacing. Pine and floral hop aromas are dominant with a bit of citrus orange and sweet maltiness. Viscous, oily feel with very light carbonation. Floral and pine hop flavors up front with citrus orange in the middle. Firm, sweet malty backbone from beginning to end, moreso than most DIPAs I've experienced. Finishes with a lighly bitter aftertaste. Nicely masks the higher abv. A decent DIPA.

This beer has an amazing aroma of extra hops and barley. Ther aroma i sweet and sugary. The problem is that the beer is murky and not very appealing. It poured with an excess of foam and way too much carbonation. The good news is that despite its disturbing look, it is quite tasty and hearthy. You know the hops immediately and the sugary grains are ever present. It will leave a grassy aftertaste, but with double IPAs thats to be expected. Worth trying if you are into Double IPA, if youre not a fan of Pales, definitely steer clear!

Poured from 12oz bottle into Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours an amber color with a gold tint and a large, creamy off-white head that dissipates very slowly and leaves behind tiny spots of lace.

Smell: Sweet and bready with a couch of caramel malt. This being a double IPA, the hops are what should come through but the hop aromas seem surprisingly subtle for the style- citric and melon notes with a touch of pine.

Taste: Begins with a blood orange sweet citrus, rounding out to bready malt before finishing with sweet melon backed up by a toasty flavor alongside woody bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with light carbonation and a slick finish.

Overall: Not the best DIPA out there, but probably not the worst, either. This is a good DIPA to have if you're looking for something a bit less aggressive than normally had.

A- .25 finger head light golden color with bubbles.

S -- Light sweet scent to the beer, not too much aromatics or smell for that much.

T/M - Peppery hop flavor, kind of bitey on its own, and the effervescence adds to it. Very matter of fact as a peppery DIPA.

Overall -- A very pleasant and drinkable DIPA, 9.25% ABV doesn't taste it with some nice pepperyness to it.

PP (Price Point) -- $6.59 for a 22oz bomber, nice quality beer for that price, high enough IBU and hop bite to it.

No freshness date noted on 12oz bottle. It's nice to see new things distributed to me.

Pours with a copper/amber body with a thin finger head, just off white, dense, sticky, lace-leavingly nice. The smell is very floral and complex, a pleasant blend of hops. Taste is a solid bitter with a nice biscuity malt, light sweetness, some spice as if imparted by tobacco. It's not a super sticky/sweet DIPA. Pretty good stuff, looking to try more from them.

A: When poured into a perfect pint glass from a 22 oz bottle, there was a yellow tinted three finger ivory head above a medium golden beer.

S: There is the pleasant aroma of hops with a subtle sweet smell. Additionally, there is a hint of citrus.

T: The taste is a little disappointing when the smell and appearance were so good. There is a strong taste of ethanol that overpowers the rest of the beer. The hops eventually come through after a couple of tastes followed by a piney citrus taste.

M: The beer has a very buttery feel to it and has a good level of viscosity and carbonation.

O: I think this beer is good but not great, if the alcohol was lower this would be a perfect beer.

bomber into short stemmed tulip. no bottled on date noted.

A: a pretty clear, orange hue. head is off white and not as retentive as i would have hoped. some polka dote lacing left behind.

S: freshly squeezed orange juice. fresh baked bread. lots of fresh, bright flavors. good balance between the two. do i dare say this smells like an east coast DIPA? i dare.

T: now this is a war. tons of citrus focused american hops battles with a HUGE malty presence. a little too malty. a bit sticky. finish has some booze in it. and some more malt. sweetness is the note that lingers with me here.

M: low/moderate amount of carbonation on a very full body.

D: great nose, but the palate is a little bit raw and too much on the malty side for me. haven't had any brews from these guys yet, but i hope the next offering displays a little more balance.

Poured from a draft into a pint glass at San Diego Brewing Company on March 16, 2012. Color was hazy caramel. About one finger of head. Light film on lacing on the top. Even amount of cobweb film on the sides.

Got a deep whiff of citrus hops, probably lemon. Fairly balanced but nothing too special overall.

Not too much citrus in the taste, but very bitter. Can really taste the alcohol. Kind of smooth. Lots of different things going on in the taste.

Medium body. Slight texture. Average carbonation,. Bitter, but smooth finish.

Just an OK double IPA. It had its moments but I wouldn’t go out of my way to have another one.

a little bit of a different take on the most overproduced style of beer on the market these days (surpassing the annoying middle of the road American saisons, a welcomed, if underwhelming, switcheroo). this one pours a lighter than copper red tinted color, clear for the most part, with a frothed up milky white head a finger or so high, maybe two, and fine retention. the nose is sort of cinnamon spiced, a bizarre characteristic for a big ipa, but its got my interest up. an oily hop profile, flirting with fruity, and a lot of alcohol, fusel heavy and I already know this is going to be a slow bottle. the flavor is not spiced at all, but more resiny, not hop resin per se, but almost like resin from my one hitter, sort of charred and sweet and bitter and more like something leftover, a byproduct, than something I want to consume first hand. this doesn't taste bad at all, but is certainly unique in that way. the alcohol is also very robust, more so than I really care for, as it dominates any interesting hop subtleties that I might otherwise be digging on. there is some malt balance, and a moment of clarity right before the swallow as the bitterness sets in, but the booze is just too much to overcome. fuller body, decent carbonation, not something im really getting off on, but my local shop just got a bunch of their stuff in, and this is good enough to make me want to check it out...

Bottle purchased in California, and brought back to Sydney to share with @LaitueGonflable and @tobeerornottobe.

Pours a slightly deeper than golden gold colour, with a touch of copper to it. Head is a frothy, inconsistent film that forms some large bubbles in places and a misty nothingness elsewhere. Body is pretty firm and pleasant, and leaves streaks of static carbonation as it's tilted. Looks good.

Nose is hoppy, but in a generic way: clear slightly vegetative or oily pine characters, above a solid cushion of sweet maltiness. It's fragrant, but it doesn't really offer anything above the ordinary.

Taste is a little flat, but it's actually pleasantly balanced. Mild tangy hops above a clean malt presence. It forms a slightly biscuity base, while the hops (while still generic) provide a nice cleansing and slightly herbal bitterness on the back. Feel is slightly thick, partially because of the build up of hops on the back.

Overall, this is a pretty generic IPA, but it has a cleanness and a nice balance to it. Let's just say it does "generic IPA" really very well.

Nice appearance. Clean, crisp, head that holds, foamy, nice evenly coated lacing.

Tons of orange peel on the nose... Unique. Tangerine, grapefruit, apricot...

Way bitter. almost uneasy bitter. Easy medium bitterness. Taste is like liquid orange rind. A bit harsh and lacking smoothness/blend. It's good, just not overly drinkable...

Recommended in small amounts, this could be a one a done. Overwhelming brew.

Appearance: cloudy orange in color with a 1" head that quickly falls. Some spots of lace paint the glass.

Smell: big orange citrus along with some floral hops and a sugary sweetness are easily detectable by the nose.

Taste: big sweet malt presence with caramel, orange, hint of grapefruit, some spiciness, and a bit of alcohol are the main flavors. Bitterness is bold and cuts into the sweetness.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Lightly crisp throughout with a dry finish. Long aftertaste here.

Drinkability: slow sipping beer. Alcohol keeps this beer to a longer session. Worthy of a try.
