Big IBU yet still not a palate eraser. Fear and trepidation as I pour the bottle, examining for the pine cone. Liquid hop pellet level of IBU, very craftily malted down and therefore drinkable. Cloudy appearance. Fresh bottle from 20 West Wine and Spirits.

12oz bottle, pours a hazy, rusty-tangerine color with a frothy, off-white head that holds good retention, and leaves nice, thick lacing on the glass. Aromas are fresh pine & citric hops, earthy, sweet bread; caramel malt noticeable on the nose as well. Huge bready malt backbone with loads of caramel, followed by fresh, dank, piny hops with pungent grapefruit pith. Super creamy, maybe a little too full, but the creaminess is nice. Finishes bitter with lingering pine. Overall, it's a nice unique DIPA. Not sure that I'd get it again, but I did enjoy it.

Pours a HUGE, dense, frothy off-white head oozing in hop resin that has insane persistence and clings desperately to my glass. A WHOLE HOP CONE IS IN MY GLASS! Nice, resiny hop aroma blends with the sweet malt to make for a candied citrus rind aroma (but not that sweet). Straw and a slight burnt sienna color. Starts off bitter and bright with HUGE notes of hop resin. As the bitterness builds, it becomes dry and notes of grapefruit and citrus rind. The bitterness lingers and lingers. This almost tastes sticky it is so resiny.
Overall, I like this. It's very hop-resiny, which I don't typically like, but this works pretty well.
If you like your hops RESINY and sappy, then this is for you!

Appearance: Pours a hazy caramel brown with a touch of golden orange…a thin layer of off white head did form and remains…could be more…(3.5/5)
Smell: Tons of bitterness…strong dank, woodsy, piney hops aroma…this thing is very much a hops driven wagon…caramel malt balance out things a bit with some nice sweetness and borderline creaminess…a very strong, almost intoxicating hops explosion…(4.25/5)
Taste: Whoa, this is heavy handed with hops! Tons of fresh woodsy/dank/earthy hops up front…it’s not overly bitter, just strong (and powerful) with hops flavor…bitterness does come in after I swallow, but again, not as strong as I would expect with all this hops flavor…there is a noticeable sweet caramel presence that rounds out the overall flavor and sweetens this runaway hops freight train…robust, rich, mildly creamy and flavorful…Yum! (4.25/5)
Moutfeel: Medium to full body with tons of carbonation…fluffs up bringing woodsy/dank hops flavor and slight bitterness to the palate…it’s got a bite to it that touches the outside of my tongue and a heavy hops feel on the back of my tongue…chewy, mildly creamy and somewhat smooth for such a strong brew…(4.25/5)
Overall: This is a wonderful brew…I’ve been delving deep into the imperial india pale ales lately and this one is stands out in strength and flavor categories…it doesn’t rely on any of the citrus or floral fluff to stand on, it’s straight up robust earthy/dank hops hitting the palate…a true palate wrecker…one thing I loved about this beer is that there was a hop cone in the bottle! I’ve never seen that done before…it was floating at the top of the bottle when I bought it, a sign of freshness I presume…I have to admit, I was excited to try this brew and it hasn’t disappointed…if I see this again, I will definitely buy it again…(4.5/5)

Yep, there's a whole hop cone...not sure how this makes me feel.
Murky red with 1 1/2 finger foamy off-white head.
Off scented aroma, a lot of sugary aroma present.
Bready, creamy, thick, sweet and sugary, drinkable, slightly dank, dry, lower carbonation, missing bitterness and bite..
Not sure how I feel about this brew... It's mixed on too many levels for me to quite make up my mind.

Deep golden yellow with a slightly hazy body. Outstanding frothy and dense white head, leaving considerable patchy lacing.
Pine tree and floral hop aromas with bready malt.
Resinous pine tree, tea leaf, and floral hops with a nice balance from bready and caramel malt. It's bitter, but still has great balance to it.
Mouthfeel is soft and medium body. Slight alcohol burn and a little bit astringent.
I was expecting this to be a decent IPA, but found it to be pretty damn good. I'd definitely buy it again.

Lupulin Maximus Imperial IPA pours a dark copper color with a nice small lacing head, and the best part a whole hop cone floating in the top. Very hoppy floral aroma. The taste is very bold and strong hoppy flavors. Good full flavor, could use just a hint more carbonation. Overall a fantastic IPA, love the hop in each bottle.

12oz bottle poured into an Imperial pint glass.
A - Tall and tight off-white head holds beautifully. The pour goes right through a whole cone hop in the neck of the bottle resulting in a hazy amber beer. Tons of sticky lacing all the way down.
S - Splendid wet feel to these hops. I get nice citrus and pine but an underlying flower like bouquet. Toasty malts also sit in the background.
T - Malt plays an important role in this beer. It comes across as very toasty with a dry feel to it. The malt carries through nearly the entirety of the flavor. Hops show up early and are citrusy here as well. The flavor finished up with a melon/pine hop note and some spicy alcohol. The bitterness is present throughout the whole flavor and although it finishes with a strong bitterness it never becomes overly sharp.
M - Semi-dry, medium to medium-full bodied, medium carbonation.
O - Excellent looking beer and also a cool perk having a hop cone in the bottle. Great freshness to the beer. Balanced yet hop forward and spread out bitterness instead of all at the backend.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass
Slightly hazy dark orange color with a decent slightly off white head.
Smell is sweet and citrus with hints of dark pine.
Taste is flilled with a strong bitter grapefruit with a decent bite on the finish. Alcohol is slightly there on the finish. Some piney hops come through on the finish.
A decent DIPA but not a game changer. Not one I would seek out.

Enjoyed on tap at Palmer Place. Served in a snifter.
A: Pours a dark amber color with some raspberry highlights. A yellowish foam forms on the pour and recedes to a thick ring. Some big splotches of lace are left down the glass.
S: Sweet malt body with some light citrus. Piney with some boozy notes.
T: Boozy alcohol notes up front with some pine and melon. A little citrus peel bitterness, but the alcohol is very in the forefront. Some pine and resinous notes as well.
M: Medium bodied with a little heft to it. Medium low carbonation.
O: Way too boozy, but it wasn't that bad overall. Probably wouldn't have again though.

Ah another one of the fabled mysterious beer reviews that just disappears down the road. Has a hop cone in the bottle! Pours a copper color, small head on it, white. I'm gonna give it extra points in the appearance category because it is so unique with that hop cone!
Aroma, bitter hops, not really lending itself to anything pine, tropical, I guess citrus, its kind of that generic grapefruit kind of bitter aroma.
Taste, solid, hides alcohol well, even though it does have a warming effect on the belly. Caramel not overdone, enough from making the beer a unbalanced bitter beer that isn't enjoyable. Plenty of hop oil in this one. Good sweet malt undertones. Resin, syrup like at times, but not in a negative way, in a substantial beer way. Cool, novel beer here.

Fairly fresh bottle, was just delivered a week ago in Hudson. Yep, there was a hop cone in there - kind of cool. (2013 vintage on draft notes)
A: Pours a dirty rust color, more brown than orange. Minimal off-white head. Looks like a Flanders red. (Pours a amber-orange with a moderate, creamy off white head. Huge, thick lacing rings)
S: Big blast of sweet oranges is followed by earthy, onion-y hops that just smells sticky and sweet. All of the sweetness seems to come from the hops. Very nice and inviting. (Same)
T: Piney and earthy hops are very sweet and a bit spicy, with that garlic/onion bite. I don't discern much in the way of malt, but despite all the hops presence it seems too sweet and syrupy. I like the hop flavor, but I don't know if I am digging the excess found here. There is some mild alcohol presence as well. (Really sticky, resinous hops are both citrus rind and vegetal)
M: This is a big disappointment. Somewhat heavy and yet also rather watery. Carbonation is very low, almost flat tasting actually. With all the hops you would expect a sticky resinous mouthfeel, but this is not the case. Alcohol is present, and the finish is moderately bitter and dry. (Creamy, full body, slightly buttery feel with a moderately bitter finish that creeps up rather than hits hard. Doesn't really "finish")
O: I really wanted to like this beer, but I just wouldn't drink it again. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't very well put together either. I wasn't a huge fan of the hop profile. The watery, flat mouthfeel was a killer for this beer. (Guess I drank it again, this time on tap. Enjoyed it quite a bit more, seemed less vegetal/onion-y than last review. Still a bit resinous and heavy for more than one)

Served in a snifter at Firkin.
I'm thinking about making a stop-motion sword-and-sandal epic using only hop cones... Anyway, this stuff pours a hazy russet-amber topped by over a finger of cream foam. The nose comprises leek, cilantro, caramel, and light pine resin. The taste holds notes of pine resin, light cilantro, toffee, light grapefruit peel, very light orange peel, and honey. The body is a light-leaning medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a drying finish. Overall, a generally solid DIPA, though the herbaceous scent (to put it lightly) really keeps things from taking off for me.

12oz bottle (hop inside?) into a tulip. O'so just made it into Chicago.
A: Pours a murky orange-amber with a large white head.
S: Sweet citrus, pine, apricot jam. Light caramel and cracker malt underneath.
T: Caramel, heavy oily bitterness, pine and grass, light apricot. The focus is on the bitterness here.
M: Medium-bodied with moderate carbonation.
O: This smelled pretty good, but the taste could have used some more hop character than the bitterness. I think the appearance was affected negatively (murky) because of the hop in the bottle. By no means bad, but not great either.

Sadly this batch is a shell of its former self. No hop aroma, instead it smells very sweetly of caramel/pastry icing. Very solventy taste with oddly astringent off flavors. Something is very wrong here, and seemingly not intentional. I had a 4-pk. this a month or two ago and it seemed less hoppy than previously, but wasn't this bad.
Loved this beer when it first came out, but sadly will have to avoid it in the future.

What the... ? There's a whole hop cone in the bottle... is this a hophead's answer to Cave Creek Chile Beer?
Different label, fairly sure this is the fresh 2009 batch.
edit: Approximate Release Date October 14th 2009
Pours into a Bells tulip a lovely dark reddish copper, very smooth, even surface of sticky foam. After a couple sips it leaves an impressive crown of lacing all around. In goes the cone *plupe*
Huge tropical fruit nose, juicyfruit gum, mango, tangerine, cantaloupe, starfruit. Whoo! On par with Hopslam and Dreadnaught based on the aroma alone.
Catty, resiny hop flavor, some residual pale malt, but basically a hop delivery vehicle. Sweet and tropical with some traces of cantaloupe. Fairly soft feeling and mellow, despite the solid residual bitterness. Alcohol is slightly apparent in the taste, but overall its a minor issue. Supple slick feel that dries out in the end, leaving a leafy green hop bine impression in the aftertaste. I could put back a couple of these... Wish I had more than a single 12 oz. dammit.
Edit: Seems to be issues with inconsistency... unless known to be fresh, I won't take a chance on old bottles after getting burned a couple times.

Consumed on January 23rd, 2013 in a standard pint glass.
Beer pours a fairly clear deep honey color. That is, until I turn the bottle upside down at the end of the pour. I was trying to get every drop out of the bottle, but the whole hop cone in the bottle neck was partially obstructing the pour. Resulted in a somewhat cloudy beer. Head is off-white and two fingers tall, subsiding very slowly and leaving a sticky, nearly-uniform sheet of foam on the sides of the glass.
Aroma is... (wait for it)... hoppy! Mainly minty with herbal and fruity (mango, peach, pear) notes.
Sweeter than expected and not as bitter as I would have thought. The taste up front is sweet and indistinct malt. The midtaste is essentially the aroma, dominated by an oily, minty note. The finish is a long, lingering, oily mint note with only a touch of bitterness.
Mouthfeel is slightly thick, oily (are you getting the idea yet?) and enhanced by creamy carbonation.
This is one hop bomb I can wholeheartedly recommend!

O’so Lupulin Maximus
Appearance: O’so’s imperial India pale ale pours a very dark copper (even by IIPA standards) color with a solitary finger of bone-white head that does not have the best retention. It does settle into a pleasant looking crust. The beer is very opaque, perhaps due to hop haze, as there is little sediment. The lacing is average and there are alcohol legs present. Additionally, each bottle of this beer as noted on the label, pours out a single hop. It is a bit of a gimmick, but it does well to set the beer apart.
Aroma: The hop included in the bottle does well to give the beer a special, hoppy kick in the nose. That said, the hops really play second fiddle to the overwhelming sweet malts, which take the form of caramel and toffee notes, along with simple syrup. Earthy hops do make a slight appearance in the form of the elusive onion aroma and other vegetal notes. There are also slight tropical fruit notes, mostly mango and pineapple. This is a pleasantly complex, bold smelling beer, but more hop qualities should shine through given the style; as it is, this is pushing towards American barleywine rather than IIPA.
Taste: This mostly follows the nose, but is a bit more of a mess. There is definite malty sweetness dominated by caramel, but the hops definitely come through a lot more. Thick, musty, earthy hops hit hard and bitter, with a strange, vegetal flavor that this palate just cannot place. The onions are definitely there; in fact, this is one of the only beers that this reviewer has noticed onions in. The aftertaste is very bitter, and yet has a toffee sweetness. The beer is a lot hoppier than the nose lets on. The complexity is nice, but it would be nicer if it was not so muddled.
Mouthfeel: This one is a syrup-bomb. Those who do not like that attribute in their beers should steer clear. This one rivals Founders Devil Dancer for mouthfeel stickiness. The carbonation is right on the money, and there is serious astringency from the ridiculous hoppiness. There is slight warming from the alcohol. Sticky sweetness matched with such astringency is odd, but interesting.
Overall: This beer evokes Dogfish Head 120 Minute IPA in the sheer complexity of hop flavor that is contained in it. It is sure to be a very divisive beer because of the extreme qualities and the typically undesirable syrupy mouthfeel (to most drinkers, not me). Cleaning up the taste would push this one over the hump and into great beer territory, but as is, this is simply a good IIPA. 16/20

A: Deep hazy amber, dark copper with a small beige head. Very nice lacing for a double IPA.
S: Lots of sweet carmel and toffee. Some tropical fruits, mainly ripe pineapple. A bit of butterscotch. A slight resinous, pine hops in the background.
T: Carmel and toffee malts and some earthy hops. Some pine and a bit of citrus as well. Vegetal flavors come through pretty strong, probably from the hop cone. Fairly mild, bitter finish. Almost american barleywine like.
M: Fuller body. Thick for the style. Average carbonation. Different, but I like it.
O: Decent drinkability. ABV is somewhat hidden. Kind of thought it would be a gimmick with the hop cone, but I think it does change the flavor of this beer. Not the most bitter or tastiest double IPA out there, but it's worth trying.

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on date present, but I'm pretty sure it's as fresh as can be.
A - Beautiful cloudy orange color, with a short thick and foamy white head, that disappears quickly. That hop cone plopped itself into the glass, and it just makes it look even more gorgeous.
S - Smells amazing. Irresponsibly hoppy, which is just what I want out of a double IPA.
T - Fresh, juicy, citrus hops. Extremely potent fresh grapefruit taste, this IPA is so fresh and hoppy you'd think someone had just whipped it up in the kitchen for you. A friend of mine tried eating the hop cone, and he said it tasted like a crumpled up receipt. Needless to say, I didn't try the hop cone.
M - Extra dry, bitter finish. Lovely, everything one could expect from an IPA. And the presence of the hop cone definitely helps to make it a novelty experience as well.
Overall, this was my delicious first introduction to O'so Brewing, and I'm looking forward to trying more.

A - Gorgeous light brown with 1.5 fingers worth of thick, golden head that never settled and left monstrous curtains of lace down the glass.
S - Citrus and Pine hop notes are predominant, but a nice malt subtlety and some sort of almost raisin smell that I can't quite pick out. This is basically what Christmas SHOULD smell like.
T - Fairly dry, and extremely hoppy. Not much to say beyond that. Nice warmth from the hops and alcohol upfront with a nice malty backbone, and a serious bitter bite and dry finish on the way down. Love it.
M - Feels like an IPA. Not cloying, not too dry, just nice carbonated deliciousness.
O - Excellent IPA. It's no Pliny the Elder or anything, but I love it and will definitely choose it over most other IPA options at my local beer store.
The biggest downside is the hop in the bottle. I think it's a clever idea and guarantees a serious dry-hop flavor to the beer, but it's obnoxious to pour and I keep getting bits of hops in my teeth as I drink.

poured into tulip glass.
Appearance: murky amber bodied beer with a thin white cap. This beer actually has 3 whole hop cones that are floating in the beer! This is awesome!
Smell: syrupy sweet and concentrated oily hoppiness. This smell like hop syrup if there is such a thing. Really leafy hops and almost a mustiness.
Taste: Big malts caramel, toffee, and fruity notes. This is really not all that bitter compaired to what I was thinking this might be. Citrusy hops and tropical fruits. Slightly resinous as well. It resembles an aged american barleywine.
Mouthfeel: medium full bodied beer with low carbonation. Its needing some carbonation and its got a syrupy mouthfeel.
Overall: I am going to call this a novelity beer because I really dont know of another beer thats actually bottled with whole hop cones inside the bottle! Its a really cool idea that Oso's has got here. Oso's did just what they promised on the bottle label...there is a side note that says: warning whole hop cones in this beer. I was expecting the beer to be more hoppy, but that okay it was still a decent beer.

Appearance: Pours a super burnt deep goldish orange. Whole hop cone ended up wedged in the neck created a sweet hopbackish thing. Head is white, tight, and drops to a thin cap in short order. Bubbly collar. Hazed, but some of the chill haze drops as the beer warms.
Smell: Tropical fruit snacks. Loaded with mango and pineapple. Fresh fruit flesh. Some nice punches of grapefruit and orange with some ripe banana thrown in for good measure. Super fresh and fruity. Big bready malts coupled with an earthy yeastiness. Tons of sweet caramel malt as well. Almost pushes caramel candy at a certain point. Some deep resin.
Taste: Big, bready, and hoppy as can be. Pine needles, resin. loads of tropical fruit and more grapefruit than anything else. Pith. zest, juice, and flesh, it's all there. Nice roasted profile backing the big caramel sweetness. Biscuit dough and even some hints of toffee, but just barely. Oily, slick hops.
Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation on a medium body. Smooth and oily.
Overall: A bit malty in the long run, but solid.
The whole hop cone was a nice addition. Nice fresh, clean, and big flavors. Ultimately hit closer to a hoppy barleywine with all the layers of malt sweetness.

Orange and very cloudy with a fair head and decent sticky lacing that lasted.
Aroma is earthy, perhaps a little of the onion that some people say certain hops gives beer, plenty of citrus and pine needle hops, and lots of earthy malts.
Taste is similar to the smell but the sensations seem to come in a different order... first up is almost malt-bomb amounts of maltiness, followed by sweet fruits and sticky, oily, pungent hops. Earthy and syrupy, with a little obvious alcohol.
Body is very thick, slick, oily with a sweet, slick, heavy finish.
Overall it's quite interesting but is perhaps a little over the top. The hop cone in the bottle probably adds some nice aroma, but appearance may have suffered because of this. It's a bit gimmicky and probably unnecessary.

Hazy dark amber, minimal off white head. minimal lace. Heaps of caramel on the nose, toffee. Some underlying resin, pine. Taste presents resin pine flavored bitterness which is backed by a substantial toffee malt body. Just a bit sweet. Mouthfeel is medium and creamy. Very slight lingering bitterness. Overall is an interesting drink, the ABV becomes a bit too noticeable, and it's just a tad malty for my preferences. Can I eat this hop cone?
