Gatzweiler Brauerei Düsseldorf “ Gatz Altbier”
50cl brown glass bottle coded “MINDESTENS HALTBAR BIS: 02.06.22 LB416”. Sampled on 29.09.21
Look: Clear deep copper/chestnut brown beneath a full head of khaki colored foam. Head retention and lacing are both good to very good.’
Smell: Bright and fresh. Malty with notes of caramel and herbal hops.
Taste: As the aroma suggests but fuller. Lots of richly grainy malt with both golden caramel and darker, reddish caramel. The hops are herbal and spicy. A stiff bitterness runs through it and leads to a dry, herbal and spicy finish.
Feel: Medium bodied and crisp with a fine-bubbled, seemingly natural carbonation.
Overall: A very nicely done altbier that’s finely balanced and rounded.

Appearance: Amber color; clear body; small head that dissipates quickly
Aroma: Malty, sweet
Taste: Watery, not particularly inspiring; definitely disappointing for an Altbier.
Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; please disregard those scores

Bottle of 500 ml, bought at a gas station when returning home from Germany. Poured into an altbier glass. ABV is 4,8%. On the bottle the name is just Gatz Altbier, (and not Gatzweiler). Dark amber colour, with a nice, creamy head of two fingers, off-white in colour and with very good retention. Light lacing left behind. In the glass, lots of tiny bubbles rising to the top. Very nice aroma of roasted malts, along with light caramel notes. Taste is also of roasted malts, slighty sweet at first, turns to very bitter on the finish, with long duration too. A metallic flavour as well. Medium to full body, with average carbonation. Very good altbier, I will keep it in mind for the next time

Catch up rating. A clear, copper, orange beer with a thin white head that leaves some nice lacing on the glass. Smell is very malty. Some grassy hops, but very light. Taste is bitter mostly. A kind of bitter that tastes like a heavy hopped pilsner. Body is thin to medium and drinkability is good. A good altbier but would need some more malt taste to balance.

Amber -brown color, quite dark. Beige foam, beautiful and creamy.
The smell is that of an Altbier, malt, caramel, honey. Not too intense, but pleasant.
Same for the taste, light and pleasant, malty, round, light caramel, good balance.
You can perceive a grassy hop, too, for a better balance.
Full and malty aftertaste, here again, balanced by a good hoppiness.

The colour is deep amber (24 EBC), the liquid is clear. The three finger head is firm, pale brown and compact. It sinks slowly leaving no lacing.
The smell is dry and hoppy with a malty roasted flavour (chocolate). Clean bitter notes, hints of alcohol. Some dried flowers/grass and fresh meat.
The first thing that I notice is the light body. Otherwise, there is roasted malt that mostly tastes like milk chocolate and metallic bitter flavours and hints of hay. The aftertaste is malty with some caramel and milk chocolate and dry dried fruits. Hints of alcohol and a growing metallic bitter flavour in the finish.
The carbonation is mild to medium, yet the many very small bubbles are refreshing. The liquid is semi-dry.
An acceptable Altbier. A little too much metal.

Was off to a promising start with an effortless super foamy head. Truly collossal beading though no direct straight lines but the beading is just everywhere in the glass. Turned into a brownish yellow beer with a slightly almost green tinge to it.
Soft but somewhat carbonic in the mouth at first. Light to medium bodied at best and seemingly tightly filtered . There's a slight tinny taste in there too.Maybe a dash of nut also with a bit of hardness on the edges. Not much else seems to escape this grip. Quenching but that tin quality, while pretty distant, is always just there.
Acquired this last week. Best before sometime in January 2011. Looks like its still being made to me.

A: The beer is dark, crystal clear amber in color and has a finger high off white head. A very light amount of carbonation is visible in the form of rising bubbles.
S: The smell is rather unique and has aromas of sour grapes.
T: The beer tastes rather malty in flavor and also has some hints of grapes in the flavors.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate with a light amount of carbonation. There is also some smoothness.
D: The beer isn't that difficult to drink so it is rather sessionable.
