Poured into a Tulip

A: light golden, clear body, small head, but sticks around

N: citrusy, orange, grapefruit, pine, very nice

T: good hop burst, and not too much malt to get in the way, orange and grapefruit prominent, bitterness is noticeable in the finish, a delicious brew

M: medium, good for the style

O: another delicious, stupidely drinkable beer from COAST

Pours cloudy light gold. Big fluffy white head leaving excellent retention and some clumps of lacing.

Lots of dank resiny hops with some floral and citrus notes as well. A bit of a bready malt profile, but mostly hops.

Lots of bright citrus up front. The dank piney hops comes through more in the finish. A little bit of bready malt, but this one is decidedly west coast style.

A medium body with a touch of creaminess. A bit high on carbonation, but with the lighter profile it'll do.

Wonderfully easy drinking beer. Very much enjoyed this one.

22oz bottle into a pint glass
Bottled on 1/8/13, so, pretty fresh

A: Pours a slightly hazy dark straw yellow. The color isnt that appealing but there is a huge 3plus fingers width of dense, sea foam white colored head, that has great retention. Leaves some thick segmented rings of lacing.

S: Big dank resinous hop notes, juniper, a hint of mint, very herbaceous. There are some light citrus notes in there as well, hints of bready malt. Smells amazing.

T: More citrusy than the nose implies. Citrus upfront, with piney bitterness and lemon zest on the finish. A touch of malt sweetness. Some tropical fruit notes, and the dank resinous characters that are all over the nose.

M/D: Pretty smooth, full bodied for a pale, carbonation is a touch high but appropriate. Drinkability is excellent.

O: Overall, another delicious offering from COAST. Call me a COAST fanboy if you want, but Im continually impressed but how they never seem to miss the mark, and just consistently pumped out well above average beers. Recommend.

I have been fortunate to have been afforded the introduction to my newest love in a pint with Extra Virgin Oven's supporting fare and was delighted as usual with trying a newer release from Coast, then continued my interest thanks to CBX's provision of a growlerful that lasted only too briefly...Was I only imagining the nose of weediness perfectly balanced with slight citrus and hop perfection that I have been missing since relocating to Charleston from California and having withdrawal symptoms, longing for something remotely Pliny or Sculpular to seep from what is a very interesting burgeoning brewing subculture in the lower east.

Coast's Dead Arm has all the beauty and taste of Russian Rivers' Plinys, with a lower abv allowing you to appreciate that a bit longer.

It definitely has a tiny bit of bitterness, but like the best of the "west coast syle IPAs", Coast has not masked the wonderful hop notes with malt, rye or yeastiness.

It has the complexity of flavors that are a bit hard to describe (like Ballast Point's Sculpin) - not quite piney and not quite citrus but something only found here, and which changes slightly at different temps, but all yummy.

22 oz bottle poured into a mug at fridge-cellar temperature.

L – Pale gold color with a 3-finger white bubbly and frothy head. Really nice retention and some good lacing. Clear with a good amount of bubbles.

S – Grainy and bready malt and some wheat with grapefruit, grassy, pine, and floral hop aromas.

T – Starts off sweet with grainy and bready malt, wheat, and some orange and grapefruit flavors. Bitterness gradually builds with grapefruit, pine, and floral hop flavors. Grassy and spicy hops develop at the finish.

F – Medium-bodied with really good carbonation, a sticky and creamy but crisp mouthfeel, and a bitter and dry finish. Grapefruit bitterness and peppery spice linger for a really nice amount of time.

O – This is a great hop-forward pale ale. The aroma has the usual American pale ale aroma of grainy malts balanced with citrus hops, but the flavor really kicks it up a notch. The hop bouquet is more pronounced and has a wider breadth of flavors than the aroma suggested. The mouthfeel is great for a pale ale. I think the wheat really adds to the body, giving it a nice creamy texture while still remaining crisp and refreshing. This is a really tasty and drinkable beer. COAST has done it again.

This is a light, bright colored golden yellow with some haziness. White, fluffy head hits about 3/4th inch before dropping to a decent, soapy layer. Good, sporadic lace overall.

The aroma is as bright as the the color of the beer, ripe with juicy tropical citrus - pineapple, mango, tangerine with hints of grapefruit and maybe a dash of lemon. Sweet cracker malt backdrop. This smells great.

The flavor takes on something of an herbal, grassy notion; though a bit of a surprise, it tastes fine and blends well with an integrated tropical blend. Decent hop kick with a mild bitterness. The malt bill is clean; notes of cracker and biscuit dust. Overall, very simple and very tasty.

The feel is lofty and breezy; light-bodied with appropriately moving carbonation - a soft rolling of bubbles. The finish has a touch of fine grittiness and lingering hop residuals.

This is incredibly easy to drink. I've been enjoying immensely the recent crop of APAs that are basically an IPA light. COAST has always impressed me with their hoppy beers, so it's no surprise that this is any different. Recommended.

A: Pours an enticingly straw yellow with a modest pearl white head. The retention is quite pleasing for a 6.0% ABV.

S: This is a delectable surprise, considering I'm a slightly biased hop-head. If you were to smell this and not know it's a pale ale, you would probably guess this is an IPA. The hops used to make this brew are those typically found in American IPAs, and they are not shy here either. The malts add a pleasing hint of sweetness, as well.

T: Never doubt your nose. The flavor of this brew is laden with hops, but not quite as overwhelming as you would expect. The malts definitely play a more significant role by subduing the bitterness of the hops with a delightful sugary malt taste.

M: The complexity of this brew cannot be expressed enough. Even with the abundant hops it does not lie on the back of the tongue like an IPA does. A decently smooth feel that is complimented by excellent carbonation.

O: COAST is a relatively local brewery about 2 hours away, and I rarely find flaws with their brews. That being said, one should take caution with this beer because it does contain a similar IPA style. It's still quite tasty and a nice easy to drink beer, so try it out if it's available.
