A big Oatmeal Stout brewed with over 20% organic oats. Creamy, roasty and way too drinkable for the ABV.

Growler from Green's Piney Grove in Columbia, SC. Brought back by a non-BA friend. I got the last pour!

Pours dark as night with a one finger mocha colored head into my Founder's tulip. Looks delicious.

Aromas of sweet dark malts, light roastiness, and a touch of warm alcohol. The whole picture has an earthy feel to it.

Taste is initially sweet, quickly followed by a dark chocolate bitterness. The bitterness continues into the finish with a lingering hop presence. Not too complex, but outstanding nonetheless.

Mouthfeel is rich and creamy. The highlight of the beer (and that's saying alot).

Overall, a wonderful Imperial Oatmeal Stout. Holds its own against many of the bigger stouts out there. Bravo, COAST!

Poured an opaque inky black with a nice tan head that settles down to 1 finger leaving nice lacing and legs in the glass.

A bit of booze on the nose that allows roasty creamy flavors protrude. A hint of burnt grain is noted vaguely.

SMOOTH roasty creamy coffee chocolatey with a solid bitterness. I suppose that a year and a half in the cooler has allowed the BIG american C hops mellow a bit. Has just a hint of booze on the back end that gives way to more smooth cream.

Full mouth feel here that is SO smooth.

OUTSTANDING BREW!!!

Growler poured into a Duvel tulip.

A huge sticky tan head practically erupts from the glass. Very slowly this reduces into a dense 1-finger lacing that never disappears. Plentiful soapy and crackly lacing plus dark legs mark the glass. The charred brown shade of Angry Mash is quite appropriate considering the significant burnt malt presence. It’s not at all out of place, though; lots of bold aromas and flavors going on here. Huge roasted and semisweet chocolate flavors, big warming alcohol presence. Nutty and toasted notes on a smaller scale. The oatmeal lends plenty of thickness, but is powerless to add much in the way of smoothness. Quite a powerful bite of citric hops at the swallow, then a thick, coating finish with a heavy emphasis on the roasted and burnt flavors. Yet another excellent beer from COAST.

A: single finger head. Lasting chocolate head. Nice lace

S: Mild aroma for me the forebodes the sweetness and grain/roast.

T: little smokey and fairly sweet from beginning to end. The cream character is the dominating feature.

M: full bodied. mild to moderate carbonation. Little oily as it lingers.

Overall: I have never been much for sweet tasting beers so for this one I am trying to grade more for its genre then my selective aversion.

another great new brew from one of the best around

inky jet black, and thick looking as well with an almost oil like appearance, really quite nice. Rich chocolate colored tan foam that rose up a good two inches over the top of the glass before finally settling down to a thin half inch layer that lasted the rest of the session,

It had that sharp alcohol nose to it and a hint of some dark spicy fruit mixed in. Quite interesting and definitely more then a little unique. I decided to let it warm to really bring out what was hiding in here and then came out the nice sweet notes of chocolate and coffee along with hints of lactose that I was looking for. The flavors followed along with a hint again something sweet, but yet a tart sort of fruit flavor as well. Very nice. Very rich full body on this one with great carbonation that never really gave up any ground at all.

Growler courtesy of funkydelic. Thanks a ton Cameron!

Pours like a pitch black viscous motor oil. It is almost in sold form with a half finger dark mocha head that quickly settles into a thin ring. Minimal lacing but the legs on this thing are crazy. Looks more like a chocolate milk/shake.

Deep roasted malt aroma with a ton of oatmeal and chocolate along with other roasted malt notes. Slightly acrid/burnt smelling but the sweeter notes counter this a bit. Lots of bittersweet dark and silky milk chocolate along with some toffee, ash, burnt toast, coffee/espresso bean and tons of oatmeal. Subtle boozy sweetness. This beer is pretty intense so far.

Full chewy body that is extremely viscous with a slick tongue coating mouthfeel. The only beer I've had that is more viscous is Dark Lord. The body is bold and the flavors are equally intense. Lots of deep roasted malt and smokey, almost burnt malt flavor. Pretty acrid up front with some charcoal and burnt ash along with extremely roasted coffee/espresso bean and oatmeal. This creates a bitter dryness that lingers throughout. Although these flavors are pretty strong, they are surprisingly balanced by the sweeter notes. Lots of luscious milk and bittersweet dark chocolate as well as a prominent lactic cream flavor. Again, I'm reminded of a smokey chocolate milk shake/beer hybrid(it tastes better than it sounds). Still it's a bit too burnt/acrid tasting for my liking with a very harsh/extreme smokey flavor. Good but could use a bit more balance. I can see a lot of people despising this beer but I thought that it was decent. Drinking a growler of this is puttng a hurting on my stomach. Proceed with caution!

On draft at Barley's in Greenville. Thanks, Barley's!

A. Very dark beer, finger tall tan head foams up. No lace.

S. Rich malts, dark and roasty, yet not burnt, sweet and oaty, but solidly hopped, too. Follows Coast's recent tack, smells similar to their Oyster stout and somewhat like their Blackbeerd. Nice, balanced, clean.

T. Creamy oats are in full force here, lending a delightfully heavy and luxurious mouthfeel, you also get cocoa mocha, soft coffee bitters, a slight booze (and / or hop) twang and dare I say a memory of smoke. A very American Oatmeal stout, not dry if the 9% (??!) is to be believed they could probably swing another 2% out of this by letting it attenuate more...

M / O. Creamy. Mid-heavy body, lower carbonation. Very drinkable... it is Coast, after all.

Some more complexity would help this beer, at the expense of drinkability, but that really isn't Coast's game. This is a fine example of an American Imperial Oatmeal stout that does everything it does well. Perhaps my biggest complaint with this beer is that it wasn't released in the cooler months! Another rock-solid beer from our friends in Charleston.

Growler shared by Joe – thanks!

Pours one shade from black with a tan head leaving decent lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malts with hints of sweet oats and lighter hints of smoke.

Tastes very similar to how it smells. Soft roasted malt flavors up front are tempered by smooth oats midway through. Light semi-sweet chocolate comes into play near the end. The ending is moderately bitter. Mouthfeel is very good, with grainy carbonation.

Overall this is another solid beer by COAST. A very well done stout that hides the alcohol well and is worth a shot.

Had this one on tap at the brewery during a tour. While I tend to stay away from darker beers when it's Charleston hot outside, this one was quite refreshing. BTW, Charleston hot is like a hot blanket over your face in the summer. It sucks, but we learn to live with it. Anyway, the beer packed a high alc content, but it was hardly detectable. The taste was mostly of malted chocolate with a hint of hops in the finish. Smell was similar, but more malty than anything. Great stout by COAST, they continue to deliver the goods.

Sampled on tap at Closed for Business in Charleston.

Black with a moderate beige head and good lacing. Smells of coffee and chocolate. The taste follows closely. The alcohol is VERY well hidden. Very smooth with a thick and creamy consistency and a low carbonation.

I really enjoyed this one. It's got flavor but it still goes down easy.

Served from tap into a shaker. Poured basically black with a two finger tan head that subsided to half a finger very slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, oatmeal, subtle alcohol, and caramel. The flavor was of sweet malt, roasted malt, oatmeal, sweet alcohol, and dark chocolate (upon warming). It had a heavy feel on the palate with medium carbonation (almost creamy texture). Overall this was an excellent brew. The person who joined me for a glass really enjoyed this one as well. Really glad I got a chance to try this one on tap if I'm honest. Great flavor profile going on here that was really well balanced and quite robust at the same time. Pretty nice aroma as well. Another excellent offering from COAST! Keep up the great work guys!

Growler filled at Growlers in Hilton Head, SC. Looking forward to this one, especially since it may never be brewed again due to Davids anger towards the stuck mash. Poured into a Bell's Tulip Glass.

A - Inky dark black with a 2-inch head of mocha-colored head that recedes slowly, leaving sticky lacing clinging to the glass. I can't really imagine a prettier Stout, absolutely beautiful!
S - Big Stout aromas of dark roasted malt, oatmeal, chocolate, and coffee. Not too complex, but excellent for the style, nice and dark and "roasty".
T - Similar to the nose, dark roasted malt dominates with a bit of sweet toasted oatmeal, dark chocolate, and bitter espresso roast coffee. No sign of the 9% ABV, such a smooth and drinkable brew!
M - Smooth and creamy, with a medium-full body and lowish carbonation. This is one of those rare beers that can be described as "chewy", the amount of oatmeal character infused in this beer is staggering.
O - I get tired of sounding like a broken record when it comes to COAST, but this is another home-run, just a big, "roasty", Oatmeal Stout that I can't get enough of. Keep it up, Jamie and David.

Tap at Grapevine, Fort Mill.
A solid black pour, nice frothy light tan to brown head. Retains well, sticks lightly.

Nice malty roast aroma. Some earthy oatiness. Dark chocolate, light coffee.

Oatmeal stout, supersized. Ample amount of the expected, solid malt from the oat, chocolates, some molasses. Just slightly dry finish, with some anise, coffee, cocoa.

Overall rock solid, probably just as good as the regular Blackbeard, though different. The oat gives it a creaminess that the other doesn't quite have. Coats well, very little alcohol presence for the size. Another well done brew from Coast.

Growler filled at Grapevine in SC. Poured into a Mother Earth Snifter

A - Poured pitch black with a finger thick, dark brown head. Nice lacing throughout.

S - Solid oatmeal stout aromas. Mainly roasted malt, oatmeal, some dark fruit scent and a decent amount of alcohol heat.

T - Upfront there is a lot of roasted malt, chocolate, and sweet but bitter oat flavor.. On the back end, it's an ever so slight coffee flavor that rounds this beer out nicely.

M - Very smooth, slightly creamy, decently chewy. Solid amount of carbonation.

D - It smells like a big beer but in the taste you don't get much alcohol at all.

Overall this is a wonderful brew. I was looking for to trying it and glad I got the growler filled. No clue what the alcohol content on this beer is but tasted like it was maybe 7-8% alcohol. Very nice.
