On tap at the brewery. Served in a taster.

Appearance - Copper body. Clear. Small white head. Good lacing.

Smell - Really strong simcoe flavor. Grapefruit. Never gets the oniony smell though. Biscuit malt and a little toasty.

Taste - Grapefruit hops. A bit more of the onion flavor here. Toasty malt backbone is nice. Mild bitterness in the finish. Tasty.

Mouthfeel - Great balance to the strong simcoe flavor. Medium body. Slightly bitter.

Overall - Good for an all simcoe. Never too extreme and a decent malt presence.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber verging on golden; three fingers of head settle atop the liquid, displaying great retention and leaving a lot of clumpage

Smell: The aromatics of this beer are off the charts, with a tropical fruit bowl of pineapple, grapefruit and mango wafting away

Taste: A touch of the biscuit, but this beer is all about the tropical fruit and bitterness, with the pink grapefruit and pineapple elements building through the middle and dominating the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: More like an IPA than an APA, this is a real treat for those who like their ales bitter, citrusy and dry

Served from bottle into a COAST Willi (proper!). Poured yellow-orange with a three finger off-white head that subsided to half a finger very slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, tangerine, citrus, fruit hop, and floral hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit hop, fruit, tangerine, citrus, citrus hop, and grapefruit. It had a medium feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The simcoe really showed its true colors on this one if you ask me. There was tons of complexity present in this one while still being very refreshing and rather hoppy. The aroma and the appearance of this one were definitely the highlights as they kept you looking at the glass and also smelling over and over. Definitely another must try from COAST in their single-hop series. Well done guys!

Bomber bottled on 06/07/12, so fairly fresh; purchased at Bottles in Mt. Pleasant, SC, and believe this is a fairly new bottling. Pours a slightly hazy orange/yellow body with a small off-white head. The head dissipates fairly quickly and leaves just a bit of lacing.

Strong hop aroma featuring mostly pine resin and citrus notes. Solid caramel malt base for the aroma.

The flavor follows the aroma fairly closely. Good hop flavor that becomes a bit more complex in the flavor than in the aroma. Pine, lemon, a bit of orange and some light tropical notes comprise the hop flavors. The malt flavor does lean toward caramel but is not too sweet at all.

Medium to light texture in the mouthfeel and very drinkable. A solid APA. Try it if you can get it.

Served on tap in a shaker pint at The Lodge (Hilton Head Island, SC).

A: Hazy golden amber with short cap of big-bubbled off white head which leaves a collar of lace.

S: Zesty pineapple and grapefruit fruity hops flavors with a solid light crystal caramel maltiness. There are some spicy hop notes as well.

T: Great flavor with no shortage of simcoe goodness including pineapple, mango, pine, and pithy grapefruit layered on a fairly complex but all light crystal malt backbone. The aftertaste is pithy as well and the overall bitterness is low-medium and thus very drinkable.

M: Slightly less than medium bodied with a fairly dry finish, due in part to the citrus dominance and pithy hops character. The carbonation is low-average for the style.

O: A good consolation prize when there was no Boy King. A superb APA with zesty happiness and lighter feel - perfect for easy drinking.

Each summer I find one particular craft brew that I find I want to come back to again and again. Coast's Simcoe Pale Ale may be it for 2012. My favorite beers are IPAs and their progeny, so pale ales usually don't have enough hop bite for my taste. Coast's offering is different. It isn't overly complex, but manages to bring large hoppy, grapefruity flavors to the fore while remaining highly sessionable.

Frothy, three finger head. Strong hops-based citrus and slight pine aromas. Taste follows similarly. Refreshingly carbonated and uncloying mouthfeel.

Beautiful rich orange color, with lots of haze, and visible streams of carbonation coming up from the bottom. Big white, frothy head slowly faded to leave about a half inch that stayed until the end. Big time sticky lace all down the glass. Smell was very crisp, lots of citrus flavors and some hints of grass or fresh leaves. As it warmed some more grain and earthy bread like smells became apparent. The taste was very light, crisp, refreshing. This beer absolutly screamed sessionable at me, could drink this year round anytime of day, was perfect with dinner(ham) and just very enjoyable. Taste was predominantly the hoppy side, grapefruit and pineapple as well as hints at some pine freshness. This was balanced out very nicely with hints at grain and yeast flavors. I actually detected a bit of green apple too which was very nice. Big dry finish with a long lingering bitter aftertaste made this a keep.

Growler/Duvel tulip. Like the Cascade version, this beer pours out a hazy golden caramel with an impressively frothy and long-lasting head. And it's got the same dry, crackerish malt profile that's the perfect showcase for the namesake hop. Pungently catty and citric. It doesn't quite reach the hoptastic heights of the Cascade variation, but that's perhaps a commentary on my favorite hop qualities more than anything. Nice sticky finish. An excellent hop showcase at a reasonable ABV. Another great beer from COAST.

Growler from Greenville Beer Exchange as a part of Growler Saturday #6

A: Pours a hazy, deep copper color with a big fluffy eggshell color cap. Retention is pretty sweet as well

S: Classic simcoe-style aroma..pretty distinct and I think it is slightly vegetal. Resinous/piney, light citrus, and a firm malt backing. Nicely balanced seemingly, with a light caramel note.

T: Bitterness is pretty disguised at first, but as it opens, the bitterness is amped up. Vegetal hops again, with a nice caramel malt backing. Light citrus too

MF/O: Smooth carbonation, perfect mouthfeel to this one. The bitterness and/or hop flavor lingers in the finish. Overall, another impressive COAST offering...again

Notes: I absolutely love COAST's single hop pale ale's. Simcoe was excellent, but the Cascade was absolutely phenomenal. Another hit

Growler filled at the brewery, poured into a COAST Pint Glass.

A - Pours a hazy orange-amber with a creamy off-white head that settles down to a thick haze. Leaves some sticky lacing clinging to the glass.
S - Fresh, pungent hop aromas of pine resin and grapefruit with a sweet caramel base. Nice and crisp.
T - Again, very pungent and fresh, with tons of grapefruit, pine resin, and orange peel hops. Nicely floral and the malt backbone is an excellent mix of caramel and toasted grains.
M - Crisp and refreshing, with a medium mouthfeel and sharp carbonation.
O - Another excellent COAST offering, I think I'll kill this growler a bit faster then I'd care to.

Had this beer on-tap at Closed 4 Business.

A - Served in a pint glass. COAST All-Simcoe Pale is a hazy amber with golden highlights and a sizable cream colored head.

S - Fresh hops, slightly piny, spicy and floral. Faint sweet candy aroma.

T - It's a really smooth, well balanced pale ale. There is a strong component of white peppery hops with some floral notes and a sweetness undertone that counteracts the mild hop bite.

M - Well carbonated, smooth, just under medium bodied.
