American Double / Imperial IPA |  9.70% ABV

Availability: Rotating. growler (110), bottle (49), on-tap (12)

Notes:
A highly hopped, yet still balanced, double IPA. Multiple hop varieties, emphasizing Citra Hops, were used. We're lovin' the tropical goodness of this hop variety!

Thanks to dogdoc for this one! Reviewed from notes. Poured from bomber into TBBC pint glass.

A: A glowing deep orange-gold with medium visible carbonation and a small white head.

S: Citrus (orange primarily), grass, tropical fruit, pine, melon, and spice hop character.

T: Follows the nose. Huge hops character, heavier on tropical fruit, melon, and spice, with the light cracker malt flavors.

M: Medium body, good carbonation sensation, and minimal alcohol presence.

O: Wow, this is tasty. This isn't generally my favorite hop profile, but it works for me in this instance. Big winner from COAST.

A: poured a bright translucent golden orange in color with yellow highlights and had a half finger of head that left some good frothy lacing sticking to the glass.

S: some good citrusy notes upfront in the aroma with piney grassy hop character hints of tangerine and light malty sweetness.

T: the grassy hoppy character was more dominent on the palate alongside tangerine fruit, some good citrusy accents, a little piney but with good malty sweetness that helped on the balance.

M: the brew was light to medium in body with a fair amount of carbonation which had a sweet, hoppy, piney, grassy, citrusy, and slight bitter finish.

O: I thought it was just ok for a DIPA, I huess I have to stick with these west coasr hop bombs.

So this is boy king? How wildly unimpressive.

Looks great-- golden orangey body, nearly white head. Decent retention and lacing.

Smells a little summit hoppy... I detect a hint of garlic/liver & onions.

9.5% ABV? I would not have guessed. The beer does a great job hiding the ABV. So... Props?!

The flavor is rather boring. Lightly sweet malt with a seemingly mild hop flavor and a very subdued bitterness.
This drinks more like a daily ipa than a limited release DIPA.

Overall-- call me Kayla Maroney, cuz I'm pretty unimpressed. (but nothing about this beer is subpar. If anything, I would call this an instance of the beer not living up to its hype).

Big thanks to mike for tossing this one my way yesterday just because...simply amazing! bottled 9/12. enjoyed from a hill farmstead wine glass.

a - brew poured a transparent orange with a finger of foamy white ipa head. the head hung out for a bit and left some creamy lacing on the side of the glass. steady soft carbonation can be seen.

s - as soon as i popped the bottle i could smell it. smells pretty awesome. dank fresh hops with a hint of caramel toffee. pine resin grapefruit and butterscotch...kind of resembles a fresh hoppy american barleywine.

t - as the nose suggests, dank fresh hops. nice bitterness on the finish, but not overly so. the toffee and butterscotch that i found in the nose is not really present in the flavor.

m - easy drinker not too bitter...medium bodied. the heat leaves a tingle in my mouth.

o - overall, this is a solid IIPA. can certainly hang with the big names in the category, but doesn't lead the pack, but certainly up there with the best.

COAST Boy King DIPA
bomber poured into a snifter
Bottled 9/12 (released today and I believe it was bottled either today or yesterday)

A: Pours a hazy amber orange, with just under 1 fingers width of sea foam white colored head, which dissipates down fairly quickly to a thin film and outer ring.  Leaves lots of pillared lacing down the sides of the glass.

S: Aroma is big dank, sticky, resinous hops.  Pine, a hint of citrus zest is present but certainly takes a back seat to the other hop aromas.  A swirl of the snifter brings out some sweet malts and tropical fruits.  Lovely.

T: Follows the nose.  Resinous, piney bitterness is prominent.  A sweet, sugary flavor providers a backbone and some balance, and hints of tropical fruit juiciness, citrus zest, and a bit of booze are noted. Gets more balance as it warms.  The sugary sweetness becomes more prominent and pairs wonderfully with the huge bitter hop notes.  Really fantastic.

M/D: Mouthfeel is delightful.  It reaches a smoothness that rarely is present in the style, but at the same time is on the higher end of the carbonation spectrum which allows it to coat the palate perfectly.  ABV is noticable, but not to a fault, and drinkability is exceptional.

O: This is a massively hop forward beer.  In a world full of mediocre malt heavy DIPAs, this one certainly doesnt get lost in the crowd.  Total hop bomb with enough balance to keep it from being one dimensional.   I'm glad I moved to Charleston so I can enjoy it.  In fact, this and Westbrook IPA alone would be a reason to move to Charleston! This is a home run in my book. My favorite COAST offering to date.  Well done.

Thanks to BeerByrd

A: Poured a deep, cloudy orange. The color/clarity made me wonder if it was unfiltered. Barely one finger of tan head that coated in wide lacing.

S: Smelled even before the pour, and noted hops at first, then citrus aroma. A second whiff after things settled out was more balanced. Now some malt can be noted as well, and it is sweet.

T: Expecting a “hop bomb” explosion, but got a wonderful blend of all the things I could smell. A strong finish of malt and citrus where I anticipated hop bitterness. Balance came to mind again. Nice lingering taste with that bold backbone.

M: Perfect carbonation and a little heavy feel, as I would expect from a DIPA. Nice!

O: Wow, get one. A quality brew I would enjoy having another one.

Drank in the process of powering through Ryan's IPA haul. Thanks!

Doesn't look bad.

Aroma is oily hops, onions and some malt. Tastes bitter and sweet with a good dose of onion and uncooked garlic. Fail.

Mouthfeel is silky and carbonation appropriate. Disappoints overall.

Bomber into pint glass, thanks to Notacommunist for sharing this.
A- Color of orange marmalade, thin head
S- Somewhat muted, a bit boozy, a bit of citrus
T- Sweet, taste of C hops, some sort of weird spice, onion or garlic or something.
M- Somewhat thick, a bit undercarbed
O- Decent overall, doesn't really stand up to the wide array of great DIPAs available.

Bottled 5/12

Pours a cloudy orange with a big, white, fluffy head. Settles to a slight film.

Smells dank, like wet, resiny hops. Mostly pine, slightly tropical....kinda a hard one to pinpoint.

Taste is great. Bitter pine, followed by a tropical note on the way down. As in the smell, it is a strange, hard to pinpoint taste, but it is good.

This beer is exceptional everywhere, but really shines in the mouth. It coats with a sharp, oily hop. Chewy, but not overly so. Just right...this is something I drink many of.

Absolutely worth a try! Get it if you can.

Bottle shared at FosterJM's birthday celebration courtesy of FosterJM.

Pours a murky dark orange with a tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and some slight tropical fruit aromas. Taste is of malt, citrus zest, and some light tropical fruit flavors. There is a mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice fruity presence in the smell and taste.

From 22oz bomber to Devil's Backbone glass on 5/5/12
*From notes

-- IrishColonial be ballin', son --

Bottle date: 04/12

A: A big, straight pour down the center of my glass yields a .5 finger head that fades entirely too quickly. No real lacing, and I get but a meager little collar rimming the glass.

S: I'm fully aware this is a fresh bottle of beer, but had I not been told, I'd have told you this was sitting on the shelves for 12-18 months. It smells stale, like the hop pellets sat in the trunk of someone's car for six weeks in the hot summer sun.

T: Boringly bitter. Not overly floral or juicy. I mean the hops are certainly there, but they're not delivered and definitely not utilized to the best of their ability. Like the bouquet, this seems like nothing more then a stale DIPA. Disappointing to the absolute max.

M: Solid weight, nice carbonation and the texture is on point. The feel really tries to bump up the beer, but there's only so much it can do.

O: What happened here? Am I missing something? A 4.38 rDev? Really? Even if this was on retail shelves year-round, I'd never reach for it, let alone stock it in my shops. Hugely disappointing on multiple levels.

Thumbs down.

22 oz bottle poured into a tulip glass at cellar temperature. I’ve been looking forward to trying this one for a while.

L - Medium amber color with a 3-finger thick, bubbly, creamy white head. Very nice retention, alright lacing, and a nice amount of carbonation bubbles. It would look perfect if it just had better lacing.

S - Excellent hop profile with tropical fruit, pineapple, citrus, grapefruit, and some pine notes. A nice amount of caramel malt is present as well. No sign of the alcohol.

T - Lots of caramel malt, pineapple, and citrus sweetness up front that builds into a nice amount of bitterness with grapefruit and pine notes. Tasty, but maybe a little too sweet.

F - Medium-bodied, nice amount of carbonation, mouth-coating and sticky mouthfeel, and a nice bitter and dry finish. Bitterness and sweetness lingers for a while. Pleasant mouth-and-throat-warming sensation from the alcohol.

O - This is a very tasty and drinkable DIPA. It looks nice and smells terrific. Excellent mouthfeel and hides the alcohol very well. Really, the only thing holding it back is the amount of sweetness in the taste. It has its fair share of bitterness, but I would like to see it overpower the sweetness a bit more. Of course, that may just be a personal taste, and it is still an excellent beer. It’s a bit pricey and hard to find if you’re not in South Carolina, but I highly recommend it.

1224th Review on BA
Bottle to Parra Tulip
22oz

Bottled 4/12/12
Thanks to Blackbelt5112203 for this one.

App- A deep orange with radiating yellows and ambers. A khaki/light brown head formed and faded quickly to reveal good sticky thick cling. A good pond layer and some bubbles.

Smell- A classic layered DIPA nose. A bit citrusy with some pineapple and a little bit of grapefruit and tangerine. Balanced out by a earthy pine but not overbearingly so. Smooth, creamy and hidden ABV

Taste- Again, great profile but been done before. A large thick DIPA with a good balance between some soft citrus more tropical in nature being pineapple and tangerine but keeps the pine at a close layer. A little thick but very flavorful.

Mouth- A very full medium body with a rich and creamy medium carbonation. Leaves residual pine/citrus combo and a touch of cream as well.

Drink- Like I mentioned on Untappd, I can see why on top 100 however, I
still think most of the DIPAs from So. Cal match up to this well. Glad I do have a 2nd bottle.

Looks great. Actually, looks like possibly the most delicious beer ever. Full disclosure: I had this via growler at GBX (what a place) one time and was supremely impressed. High hopes here. That thick froth has me convinced that it's a winner. It slowly dissipates as it sloths down the glass sides with a snail trail.

The smell is beautiful. Bottled 4/12, it smells like freshness should. The hops are fruity yet bitter: a balance of of medicine and citrusy fruit. An elixir. A potion.

A wow comes with each sip. Expectations met, I struggle to find imperfections. It's maybe a tad on the bitter side. Like a buddy mentioned, might honey morph this into Hopslam? I'd love to side-by-side these, but I was oh-so-happy to acquire this shortly after my Hopslam passed away. It's absolutely delicious, and i hold it second in a bottle only to Hopslam. Great beer in a great bottle from a great brewery from a great store. Thanks Zach. Thanks Mom. :-)

Interestingly, I recall it even better from a keg--that distinguishes it from Hopslam. It reminds me of an Idiot cask I enjoyed, which I also found better than a Hopslam keg or cask. If only I could taste a fresh Boy King cask....

Poured from a bomber into a Firestone Walker tulip. Pours a hazy, translucent, gold/amber hue with a nice 3 finger crown. Lacing is generous and has staying power. The nose is loaded with hoppiness and citrus, some malt. The taste is very unique. The hops are strong, but somehow integrated in a way where it doesn't come off as overdone. Sort of the same way some high ABV beers hide the booze. There's some good sweetness to this too. The mouthfeel is slick and resinous. Coats your mouth like an oilslick. Overall this is a marvelous beer. Glad I got to try this.

A - Great clarity, nice short-lived head with decent swaths of lace.

S - Wow, really fresh pine aroma. Pine needles are also big. I'm getting so used to the more fruity/tropical Ohio/Midwest IPA's anymore that strong pine really jumps out at me. the finish is bitter, yet fragrant sap.

T - Strong bitterness, the pine is carried over exactly form the aroma. Very clean flavor though, which is appreciated in the style, especially at nearly 10% abv. There's a little bit of orange pith on the finish as well.

M/O - Crisp, bitter finish, dry. A little boozy but nothing distracting. Overall this is very well done.

A - Pours a dark copper color with a thick, frothy head and alot of carbonation.

S - Sweet caramel malt and faint citrus, not much more.

T - Light toasted malt, mild grapefruit, and pine bitterness. Toasty malts nip the tongue up front and stays for the duration with pine and citrus that enter a second after the initial sip.

M - Medium body, gentle carbonation and leaves a pine and toasted malt aftertaste.

O - If I based everything on this bottle, I'd never buy it again. Granted, it could be a dated bottle so I'll give this another go and change my revue accordingly.

Thanks to brentk56 for this one! Bottled on 0711. I served this 22 oz. brown bottle in a Tripel Karmeliet glass. The body was a hazy dull orange. The head was dense and cream colored. Minimal lacing remained.

The smell was incredible! Marmalade and floral. Herbal. Hay bales and citrus potpourri (in a good way). Intense and intoxicating, one of the best smelling beers I've ever had.

The taste was of very flavorful, but not harsh hops. Pineapple. Could I be tasting limes? There was a lingering grassiness. Spiciness. Even a leathery malt presence. A long lingering, semi-dry finish. Well hidden alcohol. I think this beer is a cousin to Sculpin and Hopslam.

The mouthfeel was medium bodied. Fine bubbles, modest carbonation. I love this beer, I wish I could get it regularly. It's had for me to find any fault in this one.

Thanks to Holland for this IP trade. Bomber served in a Founders snifter. Bottled 8-25-2011.

A: Pours a chilled hazy amber with a fluffy and soapy looking white head. Bubbly in nature and leaves some nice sticky lace on the way down.

S: Smell fruity, floral, sweet, has a little malt character and finishes with a slight bitterness.

T: More pin and caramel malt flavors come out than in the nose. There is still a subtle sweetness and fruitiness though. Finish is slightly bitter.

M: Medium bodied, creamy, nicely carbonated with a high drinkability.

O: It had a high drinkability and some nice flavors going on, but it didn't live up to the hype I had placed in my own head.

Thanks a lot for this one Brent. Split into two tulips. Pours a honey amber color with three fingers of creamy and lasting white head. It sticks around for a while and leaves lots of soapy lace.

Combination of piney hops with orange citrus hops in the aroma. Hints of caramel malts linger in the background. Much like the aroma the pallet delivers a blend of citrus and caramel with a little bit of a bitter pine finish. Pretty good here but seems a little weak on the pallet.

Nice light body here with soft carbonation. Overall nothing bad here bt just seems like a standard run of the mill DIPA. Enjoyable, but not rocking my socks.

22 oz bottle bottled on 7/11 poured into a snifter.

A – Pours a hazy orange/tangerine color with a nice, dense, two-finger off white head. The head has great retention eventually settling leaving behind a thick wall of “lace.” I use”” because its more of sheet than lace. The head eventually settles to the edge of glass where it remains for the rest of the session.

S – Very piney and floral. Kinda smells like my wife’s perfume. There are hits of citrus, pineapple, mango and some sweetness that really comes through. From the aroma I’m going to guess this is on the sweeter side of the style.

T – The tropical fruits come out huge in this beer with the citrus and pine hop characters following suit. It has a good bitterness on the finish. This is a pretty complex beer with a nice dry finish. Drier than many I have had in this style and for that I give this a slight edge. Did I forget the malts? Duh, this has a hugely malt forward base that although sweet is not cloying and blends really well.

M – Medium body with moderate to slightly above carbonation. Nice dry finish in what is a really well crafted, complex beer.

O – This is definitely a great DIPA that contends among the best out there. I really enjoyed it and would love the opportunity to drink it again. Thanks to Eclayton08 for this one.
