Thanks to Jaime for this very special brew.

First let me say that I am a very big fan of the base beer, Blackbeerd. Pours to a perfect thick stout blackness with a full three fingers of light brown head that fades in a couple of minutes leaving scattered bits of lace all over. The nose is very promising with a big up front bourbon tone that is so slightly strong with alcohol. There are attractive sweet carmel and toffee notes as well as a hint of coffee, chocolate and vanilla. I take a minute, and a few sips before I started writing down my thoughts on this one. Creamy smooth as you take the first sips yet shows amazing complexity from the start. Blackness includes vanilla, dark chocolate, caramelized bourbon, toffee and coffee. Big rich and dark as the palate really showcases the fine bourbon and coffee. One of the best barrel aged stouts I have had without being to thick and sludgy like some. Mouthfeel is like really good chocolate, rich, full and thick with a nice caramelized bourbon feel. Drinkability , well just try and stop me from drinking this one every chance I get. This is one of the best period. Next time make more! Please.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tulip. Part of a 09, 10, Buffalo Trace, Jack Daniels side by side. From notes.

Appearance: Pours nearly black with slightly transparent brown edges.

Smell: The aroma is more balanced and complex than the regular version. Whiskey, oak, vanilla, and brown sugar come across the nose first, followed by the dark roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, and smokey aromas.

Taste: This version is quite sweet to start. Sweet bourbon, vanilla, and brown sugar combine with the roasted malt to impart a sugary coffee flavor. The oak and smoke flavors swirl together to add nice complexity in the middle. There is much less hop bitterness here, which is a plus. Unfortunately, the sweetness seems to spiral out of control and become a bit cloying by the end of the sip.

Mouthfeel: For the style, this has a medium body and medium carbonation. A light stickiness and coffee-like acidity, atlhough even the mouthfeel mellows a bit from the barrel.

Overall: The aroma was interesting and complex and the flavor was good, but the sweetness just becomes a bit too much by the end. My tasting-size glass was enough.

This was one of my contributions to a tasting at Jackie O's, tasted alongside the standard version and the Buffalo trace BA version too. It's tough to choose which barrel treatment was best, they were both good, but maybe I'd lean towards the JD if only due to more integration with age.

Looked much like the non-barrel version, brown-black with a thin tan foam, a little lace. The whiskey aroma is VERY nice, smooth and integrated, and I also caught some other notes which should be less barrel-related (cocoa, less toasted character than the standard, etc). Really inviting overall.

This tasted very good, much much better than the non-barrel bottle. Lots of whiskey but not overbearing, very approachable. Just the richness of the liquor, not the alcohol. Cocoa and lightly roasted character, delicious.

Full bodied, a little sticky or oily mouthfeel, long lasting aftertaste. I loved this bottle.

A. Pours black with a thin cap of a tan head.

S. Whiskey/ bourbon with chocolate and a dry roastiness.

T. Lots in common with the smell. A bit of caramel sweetness.

M. Very dry with a thin mouthfeel including both thin body and low carbonation.

D. Good, but not as good as the Buffalo Trace treatment.

Pours dark brown with a good amount of light brown head. Smells very simple but lots of great buttery bourbon. You can get a lot of oak and vanilla. Vry nice profile on the nose and tongue. The base beer is super simple which is great because you get tons of barrel characteristics. Vry nice overall... Truly a tasty beer

A-black body with a tan head that quickly disapates
S-some bourbon and a .title bit of chocolate
T-can really pick out the subtlties of the barrel. Can really taste the rare. Nice and oaky
M-medium body and smooth
O-solid and better than the base beer

Review #600!!! Had this one while at Brewvival. Served from tap by the man himself into a sampler Brewvival imperial pint. Poured a massively dark brown (almost black) with a half finger brown head that subsided to a minimal amount fairly quickly. There was no lacing evident throughout the glass. THe aroma was comprised of sweet malt, dark fruit, wood, and sweet alcohol. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark fruit, wood, cream, and sweet alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was pretty good. I went crazy when I saw this one on as I have been looking for QUITE some time to tick it. If I'm honest, I really enjoyed the Buffalo Trace version better than this one. The flavors on this one seemed just a little dilute, but robust enough to please the palate. Really glad I got to finally tick this one!

On-tap at Brewvival 2011.

I was so glad to see this one on-tap, I had it last year but didn't think to take notes and have really wanted to tick it off the list! Pours that dark, inky black with a thin mocha-colored head that left behind some sticky lacing. Huge aromas and flavors of dark roasted malt, brownie batter, coffee and Jack Daniels. Granted, I'm not the biggest JD fan in the world, but it's amazing how much of that unique JD character of charcoal, caramel and vanilla comes out in the smell and taste! Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a full body and crisp carbonation. Insane drinkability, I went back for this a couple of times!

Brough by Sean to our Epic Chicago Tasting. Drank it side by side with the other two versions of Blackbeerd (regular, BT). This one was the best.

A - Tough looking black beer(d) with a one figher brown head that dissipated to a nice ring.

S - Smooth chocolate and bourbon are the focal points of the nose. There is a bit of roast in this stout, as far as the nose goes this was the most impressive of the trio.

T - The real thing you notice about this one compared to the others is how much it has smooth out, I would assume it was due to the fact that this has been sitting around longer than the BT. Nice chocolate with a little bit of toasted malt and char. This is solid, not a world-beater, but solid.

M - Smooth and viscous, full bodied, low to moderate carbonation. Little bit slick.

D - Very solid, particularly for a 9.3%, I like this beer and find it a good example of the style.

22oz. black waxed bottle. 4oz. sample poured into a Founders snifter. Reviewed from notes. Shared by Mikey711 at a tasting on 10/16/10.

A: Pours a thin layer of light mocha head that dissipates quickly. Beer is an opaque, jet black. Lacing is spare but with good cling.

S: Nose is a tickling sweet alcohol. Creamy aromatic hops in the background with tempting layers of chocolate, brownie, and sweet soy sauce. Not the most aromatic but good balance and flavor.

T: Soy saucy upfront with a slight roasted malt and hop bitterness in the back. I'm surprised the bitterness is still present after all that time and covered (mostly) by the booze. End is soy saucy, cocoa, and chocolate with a filmy, licquorice finish. Aftertaste is sweet booze and roasted malt.

M: Medium bodied, lightly carbonated but very rough around the edges and thinner than most imperial stouts I've had. Not impressed. Oily in the mouth, but not substantial and flimsy going down. Finish is filmy with an aftertaste that lingers.

D: This beer is all hype... either that or it's gone way downhill since it was first released. Not impressed at all. Taste is muted, feel is thin, and nose and appearance are very... average. Not worth seeking out but I'm glad to have tried it so I know better.

Bottle brought by me to our Epic Chicago Tasting. Poured into Rochefort tulip and split amongst some awesome Chicago BAs.

A - Pours black, creamy mocha head, thick ring around the glass. Some lacing left along the sides, pretty viscous, motor oil.

S - Chocolate, slight JD, very smooth, some barrel/oak. Very easy on the nose and really impressive for 9%.

T - Chocolate, super-smooth JD, nice touch of alcohol. Not nearly as boozy and the BT or regular version. The JD and chocolate notes meld together well and create a really nice stout.

M - Medium to full, smooth and rich, oily finish.

D - This was my favorite version by a long-shot. The JD and stout were put together well and the over 9% alcohol is nearly untraceable. Recommend.

Had at the great Chicago tasting along with the regular Blackbeerd and the Buffalo Trace. I had both the Blackbeerd and Buffalo Trace before so this finished off the trio. I was not overly impressed with the first two, this one was slightly better but not saying a ton as I think in general these stours are just all slightly above average...The taste was much sweeter and smooth, lots of vanilla and bourbon and the taste and feel is the definition of what a buttery stout tastes like.

If you can find this its worth drinking, but don't over pay.

A - It pours a deep lustrous black, with a sheen like obsidian, and a nice mocha cap of foam that leaves globs of lace.

S - The aroma is beyond description; it is just ridiculous. This is immediately apparent as one of the finest brews I've ever encountered. The barrel imparted such heavenly nuances; I am astounded at the depth and quality of the vanilla, whiskey, chocolate and graham cracker notes.

T - It looks like my "Champagne wishes and caviar dreams" have come true, in the form of a BA RIS. This brew tastes like fabulous wealth and decadence; also some impressions of sweet candy apple flavors and nice wood earthiness, plus the requisite (but oh-so sublime) coffee, chocolate and bourbon. Absolutely phenomenal. Drinking this side-by-side with regular Blackbeerd as well as BA Fat Dog, it is apparent how godly this elixir is. I would be underwhelmed by both regular Blackbeerd and BA Fat Dog in any circumstance, but in this case BA Blackbeerd makes them taste like Russian Imperial Kvass. Trying to put the words forth to justly transcribe this taste is an exercise in futility; my efforts are better spent savoring than ticking so that's what I'm gonna do.

M - The feel is as silky-smooth as Gregory Isaacs and about as rich as Warren Buffet.

D - One of the best BA stouts ever. If I ever get to drink this again I will be beyond ecstatic.

Bottle shared by jredner at the 110k #3 release at CCB. Review from notes. Poured into a tasting glass.

A: Black as night. the pour dropped a fluffy wet sand colored head, that left tons of sweet sticky lace.

A: Big roasted chocolate malt and whiskey. but the barrel is not overpowering. You still are able to distinguish the chocolate and roasted malt and the very earthy almost dirty hops.

T: Sweet and savory! The sweetness of the chocolate combined with the Jack is very pleasing. I get notes of roasty nuts, coffee, and wood as well. It finishes extremely smooth but you can tell the alcohol is present.

M: As with most BA brews, this one finishes very smooth. Heavy body, little carbonation.

D and overall impression: Very nice in the drinkability department, despite the whiskey. Overall a very nice example of a BA stout. Not my favorite in the style, but well worth seeking out. Skal.
