Notes:
As dark as the legend of Blackbeerd himself, behold the Imperial Stout. Sweet malts battle roasted grain on the decks of yer tongue. Like a blast from a cannon, hop are followed by smoked malt. Hold on to yer booty, a dark stouts a brewin'.

Billowy tan head builds on this dark brown beer, Very fresh, not even a month old. Aroma is dark cocoa and molasses while the taste has a light thickness, coffee and cocoa notes finishing with a nice bitterness. Not as sweet as some versions. Very dark brew here. Great taste, well brewed, not one of the all-timers, but a very good brew worth seeking out.

Bottle (bomber) dated 022310 courtesy of jpmclaug a few years back. Thank you kindly Jason!

Pours black with a touch of red along the edges when backlit. Tan head puddles to a few soapy islands. Not particularly menacing out of the bottle, but none too shabby either.

Nice blend of coconut, melted caramel, and baker's chocolate greet my fat snout. Big earthen hop presence is a pleasant surprise given the age of this bottle. A promising indicator for the overall aging of this beer. I am hopeful.

This is a pleasant surprise. Earthy hops from the nose provide a firm handshake at the front door. Ashy light bitterness mingles with roast and chocolate. Everything blends wonderfully. From front to back everything rolls effortlessly across the tongue with each nuance playing its role but with each in harmony. Like Lifeson, Peart, and Lee in its precision and complimentary excellence.

Lighter bodied but smooth as hell with a fluffy carbonation. So easy on the palate.

Not the biggest most boisterous bruiser on the block, but damn if that's not overdone at times. This is a wonderful RiS that surprised and impressed me in every way. Hides its size insanely well. I was not impressed with what the Buffalo Trace barrels did to this beer, but I'm happy as hell I didn't give up on the base. One of the more surprising beers, in a good way, in quite a while.

Pours a dark cola brown that settles pretty close to black with some dark brown on the edges. One thumb of riddles-with-bubbles foam starts to drop immediately. Bubbly skim of retention. Scattered specks of lace at the top of the glass; it's more solid farther down.

I like the aroma on this one; straight-forward and enjoyable. Roasted and burnt chocolate and sugars; not overly sweet. Maybe a nip of molasses. There is an ashy sheen on the peripheries. Just a faint layer of tangy roast. The aromas mellows and rounds out over time.

Mmmm... The flavor profile is a layering together of all my favorite imperial stout characteristics. Lots of ashy notes - ashtray to the max! Burnt, bittersweet chocolate. Coffee roast is subtle; it is definitely a lesser component. Very dry throughout - sweetness is kept in the aroma where it belongs. As it gets warm there is a ghost note of dark fruit tanginess.

Full bodied but not heavy. Moderate viscosity with a reasonable amount of carbonation to temper it. Burnt, ashy notes linger on the finish.

Good grief this is a gnarly good beer; exactly what I like. I've had it on several occasions and enjoyed it every time.

Pours viscous, jet black and completely opaque with a one finger dark beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Streaks of spotty lacing left behind.

Sweet, slightly roasted malt aroma with a balance of burnt sugar, dark malt and cocoa. Notes of dark chocolate, oatmeal and spent coffee grain countered by lactose, bakers chocolate and toffee. Stronger alcohol presence than expected.

Tastes very similar to the aroma with the addition of a surprising hop forward flavor that has somehow held up for four years. Dry and earthy with subtle resinous pine flavor that lingers over the complex malt profile into a dry finish. Underneath the earthy hops, there's a nice balance of sweet and roasted malt notes. Lots of dark chocolate, licorice and alcohol sweetness countered by slightly acrid, roasted coffee bean flavor along with oatmeal, toast and burnt sugar. More alcohol flavor than I prefer but not hot per say with a well masked ABV. A decent imperial stout but the barrel treatments of this beer are a vast improvement.

growler poured into a snifter
Last year's version (not technically sure if it was brewed end of 2011 or early 2012). The growler is from a keg tapped at the brewery 2 days ago.

A: Pours a rather thin appearing black color with only the slightest browning on the edges. A few bubbles rise to the top but not enough to assemble a head even large enough to determine its color. Leaves no lacing.

S: Big roasty malt aroma along with black coffee, bakers chocolate, a hint of dark fruits, some oak. Fairly complex nose here.

T: Roasted malts, cocoa, anise, bourbon (even though this is not the barrel aged version), vanilla, apple, hints of dark fruit. Leaves a long linger aftertaste of roasted malts and dark chocolate. Very tasty.

M/D: Not as thin as it appears during the pour, but could have a thicker/chewier mouthfeel. Carbonation is appropriately low, ABV is well integrated, and drinkable is very high for the style.

O: Overall, a very nice IS. Not mind blowing, but a solid and well done RIS from one of my favorite breweries. Cant wait to try the barrel aged version!
