Consumed from the tap at Barley's Taproom in Greenville on 11/05/08.

Rich and decadent from the pour, rich and brown in color. Some carbonation and a faint tan head left a light lacing.

Aromas thick with notes of the roasted malts, rye goodness, caramel, and some hop twang. Very rich and extremely well-balanced. Smooth on the palate with the caramel and chocolate intertwined with the rye notes. Solid sweetness, but balance is the name of the game here. Bold flavors but not overly so. Low-ish ABV makes this one an all-nighter.

While I am partial to the 32/50 Kolsch, this is perhaps my next favorite from Coast. Solid, solid offering.

Pours dark brown with a fairly big creamy beige head. Excellent retention keeping a cap on the beer the whole way down with good chunky lacing.

Distinct nuttiness on the nose. A little bit of roasted malt and coffee as well with perhaps a touch of earthy bitterness.

Flavor starts out with more of a sweet chocolate flavor before really finishing very nutty and spicy. Combo of the grainy nut flavor along with rye is superb.

Medium bodied with good carbonation. Silky mouthfeel.

Well done by a brewer I've enjoyed in the past on a style that tends to be fairly even and boring. This one had some distinct characteristics and was a very pleasant beer to put down.

22 oz bottle poured into a pint glass at fridge-cellar temperature.

L – Deep brown color with a 3-finger dense, creamy, foamy cream-colored head. Fantastic retention and phenomenal lacing with sheets of foam running down the glass. This has some of the best head retention and lacing that I’ve seen in a long time.

S – Toasted, nutty, and caramel malts with a hint of spicy rye, as well. There might be a touch of the roasted coffee notes that the bottle talks about, but toasty and nutty malts dominate as they should in a beer like this.

T – Starts off sweet with caramel and chocolate flavors and progresses to more nutty and toasted notes at about mid-taste. A bit of roasted coffee bitterness and a definite rye spiciness can be appreciated at the finish.

F – Medium-to-full-bodied with great carbonation, a sticky, creamy, and silky-smooth mouthfeel, and a slightly bitter, spicy, and dry finish. Some roasted bitterness but mostly rye spiciness lingers on the tongue nicely.

O – This is a brilliantly crafted brew and a very interesting take on a brown ale. The appearance and mouthfeel are both phenomenal. The head characteristics are out of this world, and the mouthfeel is absurdly smooth and creamy. It is downright tasty, too. Adding some more roasted malts and some rye definitely set this beer apart from other beers of the style that I’ve had. I’m not sure if it tastes any better or worse than beers of this caliber from the style; it’s just different. This is definitely a beer you should try to get your hands on.

A: Pours more like a nitro stout than anything else. Huge cream head with very small bubbles. Color is very dark brown with a tinge of red.

S: Nutty... lighter than expected. Hard to define due to a bit of weakness. Malty.

T: Pretty solid. Good nut charachter. Malt comes through well. Balanced by some bitterness. Very earthy. A bit of smokiness.

M: A little light in body. Carbonation is moderately aggressive but not too bad. Bitter develops more than other flavors.

A pretty solid showing from COAST. Def not my favorite from them but a solid brew. One of the better nut browns I've had.... or it is knot brown? Nah it's pretty nutty. Worth checking out.

22oz. Dirty brown pour, half finger of cream colored head. Retained pretty well, just slightly sticking to the glass.

Aroma, nutty, chocolatey, toasted malt. Some leather, peat, earthy/herbal hop notes.

Taste, toasted malt, pumpernickel, walnut. Hop notes are herbal, light pine. Faint anise and some coffee as well. Some cocoa, dark chocolate overcomes it.

Maybe mid- bodied. Good carbonation, good drinkability.
Browns are what they are, it is tough to be too overwhelmed by one. But this is one of the better brown ales out there.

Enjoyed at the brewery.

A: dark brown with some light passing through. Half finger head and lots of lacing.

S: chocolate and light roast malt with some coffee/ espresso notes.

T: lots of coffee throughout this one, more than expected. The sweet chocolate flavor lasts throughout as well and actually overshadows the coffee in the finish.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation .

Overall: a very good and very drinkable beer. The chocolate and coffee is more than expected but balanced.

Growler filled at Coast... Served in a shaker pint -

A: Dark, dark brown; light tan head forms about a quarter inch of foam and leaves no lace.

S: Light roasty notes; chocolate malt; pungent rye is pretty noticeable throughout the sniff(s).

T: Sweet malt with some nice toasty / roasty notes thrown in... Chocolate and light coffee, too; rye doesn't overpower - just adds a nice extra dimension; maybe a tad of smoke on the end.

M: Full bodied and moderate carbonation; rye adds a touch of dryness and complements the earthy / slightly grassy hops present towards the finish; pretty smooth.

D / O: A nice brew, but not one of my favorites from Coast; a very big, bold brown ale, with a lot going on in the aroma and taste departments... A good fall beer, but nothing I'd go to crazy for.

Growler filled at the source, poured into a Pint Glass.

Pours a dark reddish-brown with light brown edges and a khaki-colored head that fades to a slight haze and ring. Nose is straight-up coffee, chocolate, and roasted malt with a touch of roasted hazelnuts and perhaps a bit of cinnamon. Taste is quite similar to the nose, mostly milk chocolate and sweet coffee with more roasted malt and nuts. Finish is long-lasting and pleasantly "roasty". Mouthfeel is smooth and quite creamy, with a touch-over-medium body and good carbonation. Overall a superb Brown Ale, glad to finally try this one!

Aroma:Smells a little malty, some smokeyness, some oak aromas. There is also a little tangyness to the aroma.

Appearance:Dark reddish-brown in color. Light tan head that's quite tall with good retention.

Taste:Malty, a little caramel, chocolate, toasted malts, hazelnut.

Mouthfeel:Medium body with good carbonation.

Drinkability:This is one of the better examples of brown ale out there, I really enjoyed it.
