Purchased a growler at Charleston Beer Exchange on 7/5/09. Consumed the next afternoon.
Quite an aggressive foamy head forms atop a golden pale beer. Has some nice structure and is almost creamy. Then this fades to a small ring of foam around your glass. Some light visible carbonation and no lacing to speak of.
Aroma is of yeast, light toasted grains and a bit of sweet dough.
Flavor is really nice and quite fruity. I'm not sure I've ever called a Kolsch complex, but this has a lot going on. First you are hit with some delicate fruit flavors, then a touch of sweetness and malt, before heading into a nice bready clean finish.
Mouth feel is crisp and body is fairly light, but not too light. Crisp and refreshing, a nice summer session beer with character.
A good Kolsch for sure. This is a nice gateway beer and one to share with those wanting to enter the craft beer world.
Well done!

Enjoying this from a growler into a pint glass on a rediculously hot and humid day. Filled at the brewery 72 hrs ago.
This is my first review.
Only had one other Kolsch before. This is a perfect beer for the day. Pours with a nice two finger head. Hazy yellow orange. Looks like summer in a glass.
Tastes a little spicy up front, but eases into a nice refreshing finish. Some lemon going on in there?
Nice crisp beer for summer. Easy to drink when its 95 in the shade. I will be getting this one again.
That's it for my first review. Kudos to COAST for cranking out great beer after great beer after great beer.

I have been curious about this brewery ever since Coast's Jack Daniels Barrel Aged Blackbeerd Imperial Stout broke into the Best of BA.
This is my first offering from this brewery, thanks for making this happen in our trade Chris.
A: The beer has some extreme pallor, one of the palest beers I have seen. Active carbonation is visible in the pint glass it was poured into. A stark while head that dissipates into the every familiar asymmetrical saliva. This beer screams delicate, unlike the fiery brimstone stouts I'm used to drinking. Something about it that's not inspiring still.
S: Tame in aroma. Pale malts and a small floral aroma, maybe the label is making me think this...no it does have that aroma to it.
T: The taste has pale malts that fades into a nice balance of sweetness and dryness. It's excessively clean, as the color would lead you to believe. Maybe my palate was receptive to it after reading the ingredients, but the honey in this beer leaves just the trace of honey in the midst of the dry finish.
M: This beer's body matches it's other characteristics, a light-bodied brew with carbonation that brushes the front of the tongue.
D: An example of a beer that is light, crisp, and enjoyable...yep extremely enjoyable. Go Kölsch, go.

A: Poured a light straw straw color with 2+ fingers of pillowy crisp white head. It receded slowly and left considerable layer of foam on top of the beer.
S: It has a slightly sweet aroma with some hints of hops.
T: It has a slight malt presence on the front of the sip. Not as much sweetness as I was expecting from the smell. It has a slightly dry finish with with some hop notes. Overall this is a great beer. It hit the spot on an extremely hot day. It is incredibly refreshing. I haven't had too many Kolschs, but this is definitely the best one I have had.

A hazy straw yellow pour with a white bubbly head, this beer looks more like a Belgian White Ale than a Kolsch, but it still looks tasty. High marks all around for the classic sulfer-y Kolsch aroma and grassy-floral hops. Clean is the key to a successful Kolsch, and COAST has clean nailed. It manages to be both delicate and flavorful. Exceptional! There is an unadulterated sulfer-and-sweet wheat and honey flavor that draws me back and back and back again for more. I wonder how "to-style" this is for a Kolsch given the appearance and wheat addition; if anything, it is an improvement on the style! I initially had some problems with carbonation, and found the excessive bubbles off-putting, but with time the problem subsided. I'd buy a case of this if it was available locally.

3-week-old bomber into a Duvel tulip. Huge thanks to Modernartblues for hooking me up with this one, a long-time want.
A: Slightly hazed straw body under a finger of frothy white head. Ok retention, nice lace. Pretty good.
S: Crisp, clean, balanced aroma of herbal + lemony hops on top of subtle, bready malt. Simple, to style, and terrific.
T: Opens with a bit of hop bite but quickly opens into a rich, clean, crackery malt midsection. The finish has a touch of spice, some moderate hop bitterness, and a lovely undertone of clean minerality. Absolutely delicious and refreshing.
M: Soft, light, bubbly. Excellent.
O: Incredible beer. I wish I could get cans of this all the time, as I might drink nothing else in the summer - I can only imagine it's great year-round in SC. It's got all the crisp refreshment of a great Pils combined with the fruity hop punch of a pale ale, all wrapped up in a supremely drinkable sub-5% package. We have a winner.
Cheers!

Had this on-tap at Gene's Hofbrau.
A - Pours clear golden with a minuscule white head.
S - The sort of fruity, flowery aroma of prior Kolsches I've tasted is present here, with some sweetness
T - The light and fruity hops is very well applied here, not overpowering but give the brew its defining characteristic. The sort of earthy, wheaty, grain quality is present and everything is pleasantly balanced.
M - On the thin side of medium bodied.
Notes - Another winner from COAST.

Bottle generously brought back from South Carolina by my parents. Thanks so much!! Just a month old when sampled, COAST rocking the freshness dating. Huge win!
Looks just great in the glass. A straw colored, sunny beer with active carbonation and a nice white head. Great lacing. Just a nice looking beer!
Smell is wonderful. One of the better Kolsch beers I've had. Nice levels of bready malt, sweet cereal, and some flowery fruit. Hops add a touch of earthiness.
Taste is really nice as well. Light bready malt has edges of lightly toasted crackers and honey. Sweet but not vineous or sugary - just really nice. There's even a touch of wildflower honey in the medium hoppy finish. The only thing that's missing is the Oompah band. Wicked beer here!
Mouthfeel is light and carb is sparkling. Finish is super clean. Just a touch too light but really nice.
Overall, this was a 1-2 knockout punch. Wonderful beer from COAST. Would buy again (and again, and again) in a heartbeat. One of the best summer session beers EVER!

I was lucky enough to receive a bottle of this from thagr81us in a trade down in South Carolina. It poured an excellent and vibrant straw yellow with medium cloudiness. The head was white and frothy. It smelled great, slightly yeasty with citrus hints to it. It was just like you'd want a Kolsch to smell. The taste was excellent as well. It featured the citrus like yeasty flavor with a slight sourness to it. It was superb. The beer was very, very light, almost like a pale pale wheat. It was very drinkable and my friend and I both really enjoyed trying it. I greatly recommend this. It was perfect on a humid summer night.

Appearance: pours a pale yellow color with a 1" head. Nice lacing paints the glass during the session.
Smell: light grass and some mild bready tones come through to the nose.
Taste: light biscuit profile with grass, hint of lemon zest, and a touch of fruity sweetness late. Bitterness is mild but nicely balancing.
Mouthfeel: light-medium in body. Crisp throughout and very refreshing. Clean aftertaste.
Drinkability: very easy to quaff this beer. A wonderful session beer that provides refreshment you want.

Bomber into stange.
Glorious looking beer; pale straw-colored yellow with a slight haze to it and a stark white head of two shiny fingers.
Smells of a little grainy malt bill with a light honey-touched wheat note. Very dry, musty white grape-like finish. The flavor is nice and refreshing with a crisp bitterness at the backend.
Feels medium-bodied and well carbonated. Just about right.
Overall-- this is a great Kolsch. Maybe not the best I've had, but absolutely worth drinking. I'll be happy to have this one again.

Thanks to Momar42 for the bottle! About 6 oz poured into a beer mug.
A: Pours a light straw color with a surprising amount of cloudiness and strong looking carbonation. The head is a two finger white color with good retention and texturing.
S: Grassy hops and neutral malts - it doesn't blow me away with its aroma, but I can tell it's a very high quality product.
T: Incredibly smooth, with an initial hit of lemony esters. I love the finish, it's just about perfectly bitter with the grassy hops and balanced delicately. Slight touches of subtle complexity add to the experience of this. Just insanely good, plain and simple.
M: Light, crisp, refreshing, and just amazing. I have nothing to complain about here, it's so drinkable and easygoing without being boring.
O: Oh, wow. This one lives up to the hype in my opinion - I could totally kill multiple bombers of this in an hour's time; the drinkability is insane. I'm gonna search this one out in the future.

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden straw color. Nice fluffy white head that leave moderate lacing and hangs around a while.
S: Fruity, yeasty, and light floral hops.
T&M: Very crisp. Floral and mild malty sweetness that fades to a more fruity hop taste and ever so mild bitterness. Nicely balanced.
Fine carbonation that finishes dry.
Coast is defintely the BEST local brewer I've tried in recent years here in the Carolinas. Way to go COAST! Keep it up.

Thanks to md655321 for shipping this northwest in a recent trade. And boy, am I glad he included this one. Split with the next-door neighbor after a lawnmowing session. And eventually another neighbor joined in, as well. The sight of drawn beer glasses on a beautiful summer night draws people...bottle dated 4/2/10.
Pours a kolsch, sun-dried straw yellow with snap/crackle carbonation. Smell is faint, with a touch of the summer solstice, hay bales, & just cut wheat. Very nice.
32/50 just set a new kolsch standard for me. The wheat is light, offset with a perfect touch by the gentle malting & a subtle sweetness rounding off the edges, perhaps from the honey mentioned on the label. Hops wipe their feet & smile but never become intrusive. Dry, light, crisp, & I looked down regretfully at the empty bomber beside me when it was over.
Damn excellent beer & that was created for a 78 degree summer evening with friends. Well, done. COAST.

Thanks a lot to the generous trader portia99 for this one. Thanks for letting me keep it Bill!
It pours a pretty light head of about 1/2 a finger, pretty fizzy and fades somewhat quickly over the opaque straw wheat yellow color.
The nose comes on beautifully though, with some very nice lager aromas. Some wheat, light with some light pilsner malts, and a little sweetness. Some fruits as well, a little banana, and typical lager fruit aromas. It has a nice aroma that comes on soft.
The taste comes right out with fresh malt flavors. Almost like sipping some of the grist and wort as it is coming right out of the boil. Fresh malts, some pilsner malt, and hints of wheat. A very clean and crisp demeanor, adding some lager flavors, with more of the same fruits, a little banana and more lager yeast fruits. It has a slight sweetness but keeps very smooth. Then all of the sudden a nice grassy mild hop flavor comes through, adding a slight bitterness and tasty hop flavor. The hops also bring a slight herbal quality, a good flavor but keeps nice and balanced with the delicate beer itself, making sure not to overpower anything. I really like how all the flavors come together, nothing overpowering, all soft and delicate, but at the same time you get plenty of the flavor. It must have taken them many attempts to get the balance right. I can't stop drinking it! It finishes with more soft features, but the hops start to come on a little stronger now, bringing some more bitterness, a little more herbal grassy tastes as well. It finishes pretty dry as well, which probably accents the bitterness, but keeps the finish very clean and crisp. THis goes down smooth!
The mouth is lighter bodied, very crisp, with a lower but decent carbonation.
The drinkability on this is astronomical. It's so clean and crisp, a nice light sweetness on the initial taste and finishes smooth and dry. A nice light herbal hop bitterness teases you but doesn't overpower at all. No lingering sticky feel or sweetness, it must have attenuated very well.

Had this on tap super fresh just after the release from Coast. Coast is a new venture in Charleston, and the idea is to bring eco-friendly, organic craft brews to the beach. I admit I was quite curious to try the new brews, and approached their launch with high hopes. Beach beer has a reputation for being a bit boring, and I was secretly hoping Coast would buck the prevailing trend. How glad I am to report that if the initial batches are any indication, Coast is off to a very good start indeed. But, on to the review.
The 32/50 -- what's that you say? Yeah, I wanted to know too. I was told the 32/50 refers to longitude and latitude. Makes sense when you lookit a map.
Anyway, the 32/50 hits my glass and foams up; a hazy, yellow-gold beer with a bright fluffly white head that settles down quickly, leaving a bit of lacing.
Nose into the glass, I get lemon-citrus, some grain and wheat, mild bitter hops and a grassy, ever so slightly yeasty note. The smell is good, clean with no off flavors and screams "refreshing".
32/50 tastes great, and that's high praise coming from someone who is pretty ambivalent towards Kolsch on a good day. Too many American breweries do it wrong, but this is a big step in the right direction. Fizzy, light fluffy beer flares up in my mouth, with a rush of tasty yet subdued flavors. Wheat, light malt, gentle hop bitterness, and simple fresh grain all make an appearance. The overall impression is a light, simple, eminently drinkable beer. It's easygoing, yet avoids being boring.
Mouthfeel is quite active, the carbonation blows up in my mouth, leaving a creaminess that's quite delightful. Finish is soft sour citrus with a touch of wheat / grain.
I admit I had this about as fresh as you're going to get it -- I was standing 20 feet away from the fermenter -- but even so, Coast has knocked this out of the park. It's a perfect example of how to "Americanize" a style. Liven up the flavor, maybe up the alcohol, break a few rules (like not filtering this one completely), but keep what was great about the style in the first place; in this case the drinkability and lightness of character.
This is an excellent beer. Far better than the Kolsch offerings from Harpoon and Flying Dog, you'd do well to seek this one out when on the Charleston beach. I look forward to the day I can take a few cans of this down to the waterfront...

Nice example of a Kolsch, albeit one that trades some of the crispness for a more rounded, fuller flavor- which in itself is remarkable given the low 4.8%abv. Growler from the Charleston Beer Exchange. Pours a classic light golden with good clarity. The head is somewhat slight, but the carbonation is fine and I'll chalk that up to the growler. The smell is rounded rather than crisp with an almost nutty aroma of lager yeast and some gentle hops. The taste is also rounded, with a bit of butteriness and some lager yeast up front, but with a refreshing noble hop crispness that is long and refreshing. Really nice lingering bitterness makes this quite satisfying and makes it feel a bit more full bodied than it really is. Becomes more delicious with every sip. Quite nice.

Huge thanks to jahuneyc for the hook-up.
A - Bright lemon-yellow, slightly cloudy and topped with a ridiculous tower of white billowing froth. Huge lace ensues. This looks exceptional.
S - Smells mild, which is how I expect a Kölsch to be. There is a pale mineral malt, a subtle fruity element, and a very vibrant herbal hoppiness. I guess I could imagine an even better smelling Kölsch, but this one is pretty good.
T - Clean and delicious, with a healthy dose of hoppiness. The pale malt is so pristine in a mineral-y sense, the hop is so leafy and green, and the whole thing just comes together amazingly.
M - Lighter than medium, bright and softly effervescent, and with a long dry (and slightly bitter) finish.
D - This stuff is awesome. I love Kölsch, and while this may not be Köln's idea of Kölsch, it is a perfect take for a North Carolinian brewer.

Bottle dated 051112 poured into a Spaten stange.
Tried to find this one on tap but my timing didnt work out so it's a bottle I go:
A - very light, cloudy yellow. Billowy head with tight, tiny bubbles that fades but leaves nice lacing down the glass.
S - lemons, wheat, slight barnyard. A tartness is present but faint. Suprisingly good nose for such a mild style. Spiceness and wheat are upfront.
T - taste follows the nose. Almost like a light german wheat beer. Not really a fan of this style but I find myself wanting to drink more of this. I have a quest for a good drinking, flavorful summer brew and I think I may have a winner.
M - light to medium. Carbonation brings a nice balance and the finish is so smooth.
O - I have to admit that I am not real familiar with this style, and my expectations were low. This offering from COAST really exceeded them by alot. I am glad I got two bottles so I can enjoy it again later. A really good summer brew that can be enjoyed anytime. If you can get your hands on this, do yourself a favor and grab it.

Thanks go out to Mikesgroove for sending me this beer. It is my first brew from Coast and I'm looking forward to it.
32/50 has a body that is a bright, clear yellow. There are a ton of fast moving carbonation bubbles that fly to the surface to join a head that is easily two and a half fingers. The head is thick and foamy, it has great retention and it leaves thick, sticky sheet and rings of lacing on my glass.
The aroma is big on the clean, malty side with light sweetness and a clean cracker aroma. A slight bit of earthy hops in the back and a decent amount of fruits with pear being the most noticeable.
Up front, 32/50 has a malt base that features flavors of biscuit, a hint of butter and a noticeable wheat flavor/twang. Some dry, flowery hops are in the middle, adding just a hint of bitterness. Just a hint of light fruits like pear and green apple are in the background. A good amount of slightly sweet honey pops up in the finish and lingers even after the beer is gone.
The body is light, well-carbonated, and very dry in the finish.
I cannot tell by the bottled on date whether this beer was bottled on 1/14/09 or 11/4/09. I would guess that the date is in November based on the taste, but it is possible that I'm wrong. For a beer with such low ABV, 32/50 packs a lot of flavor, and it is truly something I could drink quite a few of on a summer day. Right on for the style.

Poured into my COAST pint glass.
A - Clear, glowing gold with a nice white head that dissipates to a thin ring around the glass.
S - Sweet pale malt and earthy noble hops, with a "toasted" aroma. Very clean.
T - More sweet biscuit malt with grassy, earthy hops. There's a slight buttery apple flavor, and some nice bitterness in the finish.
M - Light bodied with crisp, sharp carbonation.
D - Excellent drinkability, this is about as good as it gets for a sessionable "Lawnmower" beer.
Another top-notch brew from Jamie and David!

Very golden with mustard hues. Very white thick single finger head with good retention and lots of lacing. A very attractive brew. Aroma is as buiscutty as they come with some light banana/pineapple notes and grain mixed in. Flavor is heavy on the wheat and biscuit up front with transition to a subtle spicy yeast and noble hops like finish. Honey notes aren't there for me. Light to medium in body with moderate to high carbonation. An excellent kolsch which for me are usually too dry and bland whereas this one is not overly dry and has a traditional flavor with some additions to make it more interesting.

Had this at the Battery soccer game last week. Yes, they sell this at the local semi-pro soccer games! Anyway, it was a great beer for the time, especially since it was a bit hot out. It had a nice light fruit/wheat taste to it, as well as a malty backbone. The slight hint of the hops didn't overpower the others. The head was thick and creamy, even lasted a while in a plastic cup. Definitely going to have another at tonights game! Go Battery!!!!

So glad to grab a bottle of this in the Midlands. Pale straw golden pour has a fizzy white head that billows up and sticks around. Lots of carbonation, like a pilsner and an aroma of light grains, various melons and fruit salad. Taste is smooth and fresh with a nice kick. Lots of green grapes in the taste before a mild fruity sweetness takes over. Some buttery caramel also present, but there are enough hops present to give this brew a great body and taste. Finishes sweet and crisp. Perfect spring or summer beer here. My new favorite Kolsch.

A: Pours a slightly hazy bright straw color with a thin fizzy white head that is fueled by the active carbonation. Some spotty lacing.
S: The nose is dominated by sweet pilsner malts and a floral hop aroma. Mainly the malts though.
T: Bitter hops up front with some grainy pilsner malt. The middle lets you in on a hint of noble hop flavor with a grainy sweetness lingering. The finish has some slightly citrusy hop flavor with more sweetness from the malt.
M: Crisp, well carbonated, clean, light bodied.
