2011 vintage, properly cellared bottle (spent some time in the fridge). Poured into a Fremont small snifter. Pours a slightly hazy, coppery orange with a quarter finger light khaki head with great retention and thick lacing. Aroma of caramel malt, dried light stone fruit, raisins, mild citrus and aged hops. Flavor is caramel malt, grapefruit and lemon citrus, green grapes, apricot and peach, aged hops and a hint of oxidation; a tad sweet. Medium bodied with light creaminess and sharp carbonation. Well, another bottle extracted later than it should be from the cellar, but another barleywine that really survived quite nicely. I wanted to do a comparison between and aged and fresh bottle of this, but apparently I never found another vintage and it languished in the cellar. This has all the attributes of a nicely aged American style barleywine / triple IPA with bright light fruit notes and clear hop influence. The hop bitterness is largely gone now, but the aged botanical flavors are still there. I'm not always happy with aged aggressive hops, so I rarely age this barleywine style any more, but this almost makes me want to start again. Although hops often get a bit of a dried spice flavor and the original bitterness gets astringent with long aging of American barleywines, the flavors are well integrated in this barleywine and I'm really liking the balance of fruit, caramel and dried herbs. I have to say I don't deserve this good a beer after forgetting this for so long. Hopworks often surprises me with better than expected brews and this is one of them. I look forward to seeing another bottle of this, hopefully in less than the 8 years that have passed since buying this one. Nicely done.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a Newcastle Brown glass.

Look is a slightly hazy amber with an off-white head that dissipates quickly.

Aroma is very sweet caramel.

Taste is barleywine warming with a light nutty toffee note and spice.

Really good.

Look: It pours copper with a bit of a red hue in it. The head is light brown and head retention is moderately low.

Smell: It has a strong resinous aroma with moderate toffee and a low level for floral. There is a bit of sweetness in the nose and low levels of caramel as well.

Taste: There is a high, rich toffee flavor with moderate resin and notes of caramel as well. There are some citrus as well as floral notes. There is a very light chocolate element. It is moderately bitter.

Feel: It is full bodied with a decent amount of alcohol warmth. Carbonation is fairly low.

Overall, this is pretty well balanced between the rich malt and hops with a moderately bitter finish. The alcohol is smooth and not sharp.

From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Community Co-op in Bellingham. Pours a deep orangey yellow in the Stout glass. Plenty of foam and an appealing carbonation fights its way through the rich malty body. Flowery and piney aromas.

Rather sweet but brimming with aromatic hops. The label claims 100 IBUs, and this version (2015?) is down to 9.5%. Big fruit with dried peach, white grapes, and a touch of pineapple. Plus a bitter slide that takes the alcohol down the throat. Sweet and hot, riotously rich and spicy, but surprisingly drinkable. Another interesting brew from HUB and one of the better American Barleywines I've ever had.
