Appearance: Clear brown, good head.

Smell: Bready, mild.

Taste: Moderate toffee, bready, roasted malt, a bit of sweetness.

Overall: Brown ales aren't my favorite style as they seem kind of samey and can be boring. This is a pretty decent beer with a little more flavor than I was expecting. A nice option for a session beer to offset the hoppy stuff and the pilsners and lagers.

16 oz can poured into a Tallgrass tulip.
4.4% ABV, no date.

A - Tallgrass' Pub Ale (as it's labeled) pours with a tall and long lasting ivory head that lingers for quite a while before assimilating into the beer. Chunky lace adheres to the glass above the beer's lovely clear tarnished deep amber colored body.

S - Dusty cocoa nibs and bakers chocolate emerge as the first noticeable aspects of the aroma, filling the nose with an already full presence. Following closely is a very earthy hop aroma which suggests gardening in the spring; cut grass, damp soil, and old wood chips. Both the chocolate-like presence and earthy hop tone blend well with the rustic, bready amber malts for a rich aroma sure to follow through into flavor.

T - Toasted amber malts present an earthy, bready flavor not that different than what the aroma offers, though much of the chocolate-like notes have seemed to mellow into a more submissive undertone rather than bold entry. Likewise, the earthy hoppiness remains present but has also married the malt profile further for great balance.

M - A smooth mouthfeel entry leads to a crisp carbonation bite that seems to keep the fuller malt body in check for ease of drinkability, finishing out with a dry, mildly bitter earthy hop and roasted malt bite. Tallgrass Pub Ale is well balanced to say the least!

O - Tallgrass Pub Ale manages to quite successfully pack full flavor and robust body into a dangerously drinkable beer, perfect for, well, the pub of course! The balance is there in feel and flavor profile as the beer teeters between smooth and crisp, malty and hoppy. Very well done indeed.

Served from the can to a standard shaker glass on 4/15/13. The beer is a deep, ruddy brown color with bright orange hues throughout. The color is reminiscent of a fresh raisin. There is a good cap of frothy, sandy colored head with very nice retention. Lacing is evident, but dissipates quickly. This is a very nice looking brown ale. The nose is very fruity with lots of figs and raisins up front; maybe a touch of fruity hops as well, but it's definitely the dark fruits of the malts that hold the forefront. There is a mild whiff of smoke on the nose as well as some good roasted nuts and wheat bread. The taste follows the nose almost perfectly. The dark fruit again is quite evident like a big fresh slice of cinnomon raisin bread (though the cinnamon is quite subdued). The malt is the star of the show here, though at times almost becomes too sweet. Hops are very subdued and low, mostly earthy in nature which plays well with the malt. The mouthfeel is light bodied, and at times becomes a little cloying in nature. Tallgrass continues to make very good beers. This is a great example of a good American Brown; highly recommended.

16 oz can poured into pint glass.

A: Poured a dark amber color with a good 2 fingers worth of head that settles to a thin layer with very spotty lacing.

S: I'm getting the normal Brown Ale notes...Sweet malt, hints of butterscotch and caramel, very little hops here.

T: Wow there is a little mild hops right at the start, then the nice sweetness kicks in caramel and butterscotch are right there and run all the way to the finish. Nice sweet butterscotch aftertaste.

M: Medium bodied perfect for the style. Gets creamier as it warms.

D: Pretty good little Brown here. Worth looking for.

A: Copper, dark toffee

S: Toasty, malty, roasted nut notes, fruity and slight bread.

T: Some coffee and toffee notes with a hint of cocoa. Up-front malty that lingers. More fruity that hoppy.

MF: creamy, smooth, low to medium carbonation and body with a very pleasant aftertaste.

Overall a very good amber Ale. I personally prefer this one on the colder-side. Refreshing and not heavy. Would like a little more carbonation. Very drinkable, and one can is not enough!

This is a nice IPA. It's no hop bomb or blast in the mouth, but it delivers a consistent flavor profile. I feel like that is one of the things that comes up short on some American IPAs: the flavor profile falls off or diverts from what it started out from. This is not one of those IPAs. I can dig it. Likin' Tallgrass so far. And supposedly I'm saving the best for the last.

Appearance: Poured from the 16 oz can into a pint glass. The beer is a dark amber/copper color with my pour producing a thick off white head 2-inches in height. Head lingers for quite awhile as the beer is consumed.

Smell: Light malt-centric aromas. Nothing really hop like. Scents of lightly roasted malts, a little slightly sweet caramel malt with it.

Taste: Stays in line with the aroma. Good malty backbone, lightly roasted malts. Just a hint of bitterness on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy. Not too heavy, medium in body with a natural unforced carbonation to it.

Overall: A nice easily drinkable, very sessionable ale. Different than the average beer, yet not too over the top in big flavors. Purchased a 4 pack of cans "on sale" for only $4, a very good deal indeed.
