Bottle, at Cardinal’s Ølsymposium. Pitch black colour, moderate tan head. Lovely and well rounded aroma and flavour with all the typical robust porter qualities, but the roastiness is not overdone. Smooth and nicely balanced. Will give a more detailed review on the next occasion.

500ml Bottle from the Ottawa LCBO for $6

Appearance - Dark brown colour with an above average size frothy light brown head. I can't make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some great lacing. The head lasted for over 5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Malts, chocolate, coffee

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste malts, chocolate, and light coffee. There is also some dark fruits and a bit of a graininess. It ends with a chocolate aftertaste with lingering bitterness from smokey/burnt notes.

Overall - An above average brew. The chocolate flavours are nice and rich and the dark fruit and smokey notes provide a nice contrast. A beer worth picking up.

X Porter (“XP”) is a collaboration between Midtfyns Bryghus and Brouwerij De Molen of the Netherlands. The beer comes in a brown 500 ml bottle and is 8.0% alcohol with a best before date of April 15, 2015.

XP is a beautiful looking beer, an opaque black colour with a monster 3” chocolate milk coloured head produced with a slightly aggressive pour. The head lingered for about 5 minutes before settling down into a 1/8” cap of foam leaving some modest lacing in its wake. Its aroma is of black licorice, European style dark chocolate and dark roast coffee. The taste is best described as an overpowering combination of black licorice, bitter dark chocolate, bitter dark roast coffee and smoke. The first three linger on throughout the sampling and never clear…as a result I'm struggling to finish the bottle. XP's mouth feel is rich and creamy, reinforced by a soft carbonation and full body. The beer is quite heavy and more than one per sitting would be too much. Given the strong lingering aftertastes one bottle was one too many for Bucky's taste, despite the fact that XP does have several redeeming qualities. XP sells for $5.95 per 500 ml bottle.

A beautiful looking beer that pours an inky black with a densely packed chocolate coloured head. That head disappears quickly leaving less lacing than expected, but still an attractive pour.

Barrel-forward aroma has lots of funk to compliment the caramelized and dark roasted malts. The flavour is sharper and strikes me as less well balanced, with an earthy edge that has more tannins than I'd choose for this style. A nice coffee bitterness finishes along with some harsher tones.

Appearance: incredibly deep, dark brown, with a beautiful milk chocolate head lingering for ages with lace draping

Aroma: dark chocolate, but not too bitter; anise, but more rich and deep than you often get; touches of dark fruit, coffee; lot's going on

Taste & Mouthfeel: loads of creamy, rich espresso flavour, with chocolate coming through strong in the finish and a fine undercurrent of bitterness from the roast that actually compliments the fuller flavours and lends an almost fruity aspect - like chocolate covered cherries; smooth body makes it feel light, although maybe a touch too thin; some hints of vanilla and molasses

Overall: a truly stunning porter, with a flowing, deep river of flavour and incredibly gentle and luxurious feel

Two fingers of dense and creamy tan coloured head sits on top of its jet black body. As it slowly recedes, thick stripes of lace stick to the glass. This is a big looking porter.

Syrupy raisins and dates lie at its core. Sweet chocolate encases them, giving the impression of Glossetes. The roasted barley character has a smoky edge to it. This rounds it out and gives it some more depth but the sticky dark fruits are the ones that steal the show.

Soft vanilla comes in the picture now, running parallel to the sweet dark chocolate that is present from beginning to end. Its roastiness isn't nearly as pronounced as its sweetness but carries with it a bit of a twang and adds a touch of dryness to the finish. Similar to the nose, the raisins and dates lie at the center. They're a bit syrupy and their sweetness matches the chocolate quality of the beer. As it warms, a quick flash of sweet alcohol grazes the tongue in the finish.

This Porter is quite clean with every flavour well integrated and well rounded. Its body is medium to full with a creamy backing. There's a touch of dryness in the finish but it doesn't change much from the beginning.

I thoroughly enjoyed this Porter from beginning to end. It wasn't too heavy but it packed lots of flavour. More than anything, I was surprised with how clean it came off. Another winner from the Netherlands.
