Bourbon Barrel Anastasia pours a very dark chocolate fudge color. It’s onyx. Pitch black. No light cuts through at all. Not even when held to light. Very impressive…and ominous. It’s topped with a dark mocha colored head. It rises to about a finger and a half in height before falling back. Lacing was a little sticky and lighter. Looks really nice!

The nose is impressive. Bourbon is definitely strong in the mix and hits first. I don’t know how long this was in barrels, but it smells like it was there a while. Chocolate is definitely noted. Doesn’t smell very sweet. There’s a roasted quality to it, as well. Bourbon is strong, but plays nicely with the other scents. Secondary scents include oak, vanilla, roasted coffee, and alcohol. Alcohol is easily noted. Eh. It’s barrel-aged. What’d you expect? Smells very, very good.

The flavor is likewise impressive. Bourbon comes through loud and clear here as well. If you’re not much into bourbon, this one might not be for you. Nevertheless, the bourbon flavor blends very well with the roasted and chocolate malt base. The chocolate flavor is bittersweet and cocoa-esque. It’s not very sweet. The barrel-aging process imparted nice oak and vanilla flavors. Perhaps a bit of coconut, too. Roasted coffee and alcohol round it out. The alcohol is a bit strong and is warm. It’s not too intimidating though. Good stuff. Finishes chocolaty with a strong shot of bourbon.

At first, the body seems lighter and thin. As it warms, it does grow a bit thicker and more substantial. Carbonation is lighter, and the bubbles feel soft. It’s nice and smooth. Goes down relatively easy for a bigger beer. There’s no way I could handle a growler of this solo. Sharing is the way to go.

I’m really impressed with Bourbon Barrel Anastasia. This is definitely good stuff. I like the strong bourbon a lot. It’s not too much, but adds a ton of flavor and character. This is an all around strong beer from Weasel Boy. Easy recommendation.

10oz. at the brewpub. It black, layer of light tan head. Sticks just a bit.

Aroma, roast malt, caramel, cocoa and vanilla oak. Can't complain.

Taste, pleasant rendition of the aroma, though more so. The oaky vanilla blends well with the roast, chocolates and earthiness of the stout. Very faint anise and coffee. Finishes mostly with the vanilla latte.

Solid medium body, not dark lord thick, but who really honestly likes dl anyway? Lower carbonation, almost creamy. Only slightly warming.

Don't know if I could spend $50 for the giant growler of it, but you would get your moneys worth $/volume compared to many other bb stouts. Just spent $40 on a 22 of 50/50 Eclipse, so maybe I'm still a little upset about that.

Should at least try if you see it.

128 ounce (1 gallon) brewery sealed growler, took a few days to drink it last weekend. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch brown head that didn't stay around for too long. The brew smells like roasted malt, bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and some dark fruit. Taste is similar to the aroma, the brew tastes like roasted and burnt/charred malt, bittersweet chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, coffee, and a little bit of dark fruit. The bourbon is certainly noticeable in both the aroma and taste of this beer. However, I think the roasty bitter flavors are stronger than the sweet ones. Mouthfeel is light/medium, it's thinner than I expected it to be. Certainly one of the thinner stouts I’ve had recently. It's slick and coating, and also has low/moderate carbonation. I think this is a solid overall brew, I liked it.

I've had this once or twice thanks to Keffa (including a 1 gal growler monstrosity). But this review comes from a pour at Bodega, off of a clean palate.

Black with a very short head. Seems pretty low on carbonation but also creamy, almost like it was on nitro.

Smells of bourbon - loads of that barrel juice/leftover liquor flavor.

The flavor is choc full of chocolate, vanilla, coconut, and roast. Lots of bourbon flavor - this is fresh and brash, but nothing that ever gets out of control the way some barrel-aged beers can become.

Warm but not boozy. Sticky and a bit under carbonated.

Overall a very solid example of the style. I feel like this beer was better in the past, but this is the first sample I have had enough of to do a full review.

A- Pours a pitch black color with a pretty thin brown head. Head is gone pretty quickly and leaves pretty much no lacing at all.

S- Smell is a huge scent of bourbon, quite a bit of vanilla, and oak. Quite a bit of sweetness to the smell.

T- Overall pretty sweet and very strong in vanilla. A really good amount of bourbon, along with oak and a bit of charred malts. Vanilla leading the way for sure with just a bit of darker fruits here.

M- Medium in body and maybe a little light carbonation seemed a bit low.

O- Pretty impressed with this brew very nice and solid.

Poured from growler.

A- Pours a solid brown color with red hues when light hits it. There was no head on this beer. No lacing but it did show a small coating on the sides of the glass.

S- Sweet malts in the front of the aroma. Darker fruits first show up then a clean roasted malt right after that. Hints of anise were present in the back of the aroma along with a touch more sweetness from the malts. Mild barrel aging notes with both oak and bourbon in the ending. Alcohol seems to come through pretty strong on this beer too.

T- Sweet malts come through with the taste as well. Darker fruits (plum and light cherry) come out with the roast finally showing up after all of this. Middle of the beer showed off more roast with hints of black licorice. Ending shows off the barrel which in turn was still a little weak. By the ending of the beer I got those sweet almost caramel malts once again with a nice oak flavor and light lingering bourbon that leads to a warming alcohol finish.

M- Medium-light mouthfeel. Carbonation was a tad thin on this beer. Sweet caramel malts and hints of roasted malt are left on the palate. Aftertaste is mostly sweet caramel malts, warming alcohol, light oak, and lingering bourbon. Flavors were a little stop and go not making a smooth transition from one to the next. I didn't find any off flavors while drinking this one. Medium alcohol drying on the palate.

O- Overall I thought this beer almost tasted like a hybrid of a stout and barleywine with it not knowing which side to lean to. The barrel notes were nice but didn't do much for the overall aroma or flavor profile. I am a little curious to see how this one ages with hopes that the caramel malt dies down in flavor a bit making it a little more than a run of the mill barrel aged stout. One pour was enough for me as I had a hard time finishing it as when it warmed the sweetness started to become too much.
