A - Pale yellow, ever so slightly hazy, and with some persistent wispy head. Perfect for the style.

S - Lemony, lactic, refreshing, balanced, sublimely and superbly crafted.

T - Perfect balance, lemony-lactic-radiant.

M - Amazing; beyond very refreshing.

D - I could pound gallons of this. I think that after I make my first billion, I am going to somehow subjugate Phil Markowski, and force him to toil for the rest of his days as my Berliner Weisse-producing captive. I will then stockpile enough SH Berliner for it to be a traded commodity, at which time a coalition of government entities headed up by the SEC, Treasury Dept. and World Bank will likely take me down. But I won't go down without a fight!

Big thanks to Mike and Jon for this one. I've had this about 3 times and I've never had the chance to review it till now. From notes. 22oz. bomber into a 3F tulip.

Pours a .5 finger white head with moderate retention. Beer is cloudy yellow. Lacing is spotty with good stick. Decent but not much stands out.

Nose is lemon, yeast, some mellow cane sugar, soft funk, some mild sweetness and a mellow tartness. Great balance and very appetizing.

Opens light lemon. Bready and yeasty with a pear and lemon light tartness in the middle. End is hay, funk, wheat, and light lemon. Aftertaste is more lemon rind. Very balanced, light, refreshing and surprisingly funky.

Light bodied with moderate to low carbonation. Soft in the mouth and mellow and lightly spritzy going down. Accented finish with a lightly lingering aftertaste. Slightly oxidized.

This isn't a standout beer if you've never had the berliner weisse style. However, if you have, it is completely different from other offering in the category. The flavor is much fuller and funky though the body remains infinitely drinkable. Just a very well crafted beer all the way around.

Thanks so much to Mike for tracking this down (and to Adam for hooking it up!). 2009 bottle poured in to a wine glass.

Hazy, straw-like color with some beautiful looking lace and lasting creamy foam on top. Oddly enough, the head doesnt die right away like a lot of berliners. Aroma is a fantastic blend of straw, grass, some brett-like character that is soft, a good bit of funk and a touch of oxidation. A bit of lactic acid in the nose, but nothing like most berliners I have tried. The beer tastes phenomenal, hands down the best berliner I've ever tried. The lactic character is so subtle and soft and really pulls all the funk and malt flavors together. Incredible for 2%. I get some light oxidation, a bit of green apple and some definite brett, but not a super barnyardy type brett. Something different that I dont have a lot of experience with. Light and spritzy mouthfeel.

I wish I had this earlier in its life to compare, but from what I tasted this is still doing very well. One of the attendees had this 3-4 times and mentioned it was different, less sweet than it was when fresh. Thanks again Mike!

This is pretty fantastic stuff. My second time having it. I had it once before many moons ago when Verecund generously shared a bottle back in my Durham townhouse. This time is in Ryan's basement. Pours an almost crystal-clear champagne colored hue in my glass. Citric sourness, a touch of lactic in the nose amd a bit of sweet lately playing in the background. Flavor has a touch of sweetness overlying some nice tart lemon curd flavors, really bright, perfectly balanced but the nice partially citric Forward brew, a bit of hay and grass, slightest bit of mushroom. It finished a touch dry, heavily layered flavors, with water that is very clean. Excellent tartness, just enough though the flavor seems to have faded a bit since last time I had it, though maybe also due to memory. The mouthfeel is excellent, all soft tannins that make my tongue wrinkle when I swallow. Overall just remarkable for a 2% ABV beer. Glad to have had this twice.

this bottle was brought out by Gonzoillini.This beer rocks!... sample after sample after sample... Mostly clear, off-yellow beer with a small, fizzy, white head. Sour, funky aroma with notes of lemon, underripe berries, spent grain and pineapple. The flavor is also very sour and grainy with no semblance of balance. Pungent, fruity esters abound. Light to medium-bodied with lively carbonation. Sour, dry finish. I would drink this brew five nights per week if it were more available

Humongous thanks to mike for pulling this one out tonight! Awesome start to an evening of amazing beers. 2009 vintage, bottle # 133 of 150.

a - extremely pale yellow with a fizzy head. kind of looks like a spring day. very champagne like...especially the way the head zapped away.

s - grassy, lemon zest. soft. underlying funk...can't put my finger on the exact smell...almost dirt.

t - REALLY tasty. zesty. sour and earthy. i could drink this al day long. dry but juicy.

m - prickly. refreshing. like a summers day. champagne meets beer in a wonderful marraige.

o - overall a little sour and a little grassy. little zesty and a little lemony. fantastic beer. i could drink this all day. dry and easy. very much the kind of beer i want to be sipping overlooking some amazing scenery on a perfect weather day. this is THE beer for that day of ultimate relaxation and realization...truly a work of art and fully lived up to the hype. far and away the highlight of the night (which included beatification, coolships, etc).

edit...now, a few days later I can honestly say that I have dreamed about this beer 3 times this week. would love to have this again.

Thanks to forgetfu for bringing this to our sour tasting yesterday. Possibly the highlight for me. Pours a nice golden straw color with white head. One of the better smelling beers I've experienced - a very grainy quality, wheat, and very light citrus. Flavor is exceptional - clean wheat and bright refreshing acidity. I could drink this all day. Overall, one of the better beers I have had. Amazing how much flavor is packed in to such a low ABV brew.

Whoa baby....lovely citrus and malt aroma, light yellow color with tiny head. Sourness of light apples, white grapes, and light malts. For a 2% brew this is quite drinkable and tasty. Light, refreshing yet tasty with the sour notes. I'm not sure this needs a syrup like many German Berliner weises, but it's possible it would add something for those liking alco-pop brews.

2009 Bomber #79/150.

Poured initially into a Southampton fishbowl sized goblet and subsequent pours into a cervoise. Amazing how a change of glassware can bring out different nuances you might have otherwise missed. This brew appears a clear light straw yellow color with some faint particulate that makes its way into my glass despite a careful pour. Fizzy carbonation constantly streams to the surface. Initially this brew displayed a finger of white bubbly head that quickly dissolved and holds in a spotty pattern across the top and with a line around the edge of the glass wall.

The aroma of this berliner weisse is initially fruity with a scent of apple meets pears. Mingled with the sweet fruity character are lactic sour notes with a touch of yogurt and a minor indication of some sulfur. As the brew comes up to temperature there is a minor note of stinky feet and some underlying funk that was previously hidden. Also as this brew warms up further, it gets strikingly more "sharp" smelling with its lactic character that nearly dominates all other scents except for the perpetual lemony smell that mixes with apple and pear.

The taste of this is strikingly similar to lemon flavored sweet tarts, more on the side of the lemony acidity than candy though. It includes minor notes of the previously mentioned pear and apple but with a more pronounced level of tart flavors that are lactic. The aftertaste is somewhat like yogurt but not with the drying quality to the tongue that some berliners have. There is an underlying funky aspect that comes out once this brew warms and it gets increasingly more sour. More sips reveal a faint grainy character that provides some backing sweetness somewhat like wheat. I am blown away that this is 2% abv.

This is a light bodied brew with a prickly level of high carbonation. It gets fizzy at times inside the mouth that helps to make the lactic quality of this offering really pop. This brew is balanced well and a perfect example of the style. So easy drinking, you could easily devastate a bottle of this yourself in no time. 2% abv? Amazing, this brew displays so much depth of character in both flavor and aroma it is unreal. This was essentially my only "white whale," it was my single most sought after brew. When I finally acquired it care of tprokop7 (Thanks again Todd!) I could not figure out an appropriate time to open it. Tonight was the night, shared with my wife in celebration of my first born child. Everything about this beer is perfect - look, smell, taste, feel and time/place. It is deserving of the only perfect 5 rating I have ever given.

2009 vintage. Bottle #17/150. Shared with a couple of local BAs on May 10, 2011.

Straw-bodied with a half finger of head that settles to almost cover the surface. Some, but not much lacing. The first pour was bright, with nice clarity, though by the third pour there was a good bit of haze.

Grass and lots of malted wheat comprise the bulk of the nose, but there's some lemon and green apple acidity as well.

Lots going on here: light (almost watered down) citrus and lactic acidity, green apple, white grape, and a tiny bit of white-flesh stone fruit. Just about perfect hay and wheat malt backbone, with a touch of honey-like sweetness and a wee-bit of mustiness.

Light-bodied, crisp, and refreshing. Nicely tart.

A great beer that only gets better as you get further into the glass. I was sad to see my glass empty. An unbelievable beer given the ABV.
