Pours a midnight black with a frothy, antique white head. Very thick, creamy lacing buildup in the sides of the glass. Adequate carbonation. Great aroma of sweet cream and toffee, roasted malt, and raisins. Not as robust as I prefer however. Onto the taste: I was pleasantly surprised about the flavor, it's quite bigger than the aroma. Mostly consists of toasted malt and light roast coffee, but there is a sweet and tart aspect, reminding me of figs and twizzlers! This beer gives the mouth a great coating, but the finish is a little thin. Only a slight tingle. Feels warm on its way down, though. Absolutely worth trying.

bought at Beers of the World, March 2013.

poured from 12 oz bottle into a Samuel Smith's pint glass, served at cellar temp.

appearance: Midnight Black with a thick cafe au lait head. Decent lacing.

aroma: doesn't smell very 'imperial'! Roasted malt, licorice and a touch of molasses.

mouthfeel: good, if a little thin.

taste: very tasty; rich chocolatey malt, a hint of roasted nuts, black licorice.

notes: This is a tasty beer with a lot going for it.

12oz : Teku glass

Near black, with deep red mahogany highlights when held to light. Fairly short lived, foamy light tan head.

Lightly roasty, cocoa notes.

Some basic roasted malt, faint cocoa. Not much going on here.

Thin body with foamy, fizzy carbonation.

A decent porter, but also fairly forgettable. I was expecting a bit more of a bolder flavor profile and perhaps a bit heavier body.

It looks pitch black, but it's actually a very dark reddish brown. It has a tan head That leaves sheets of lacing down the sides of the glass, but head retention is pretty poor. Within moments the head dissapates to leave a paper thin layer of foam. Lacing is still very nice though. Aromas of alcohol and raisins rise from the surface of the beer, a little molasses as well. The taste carries notes of cocoa and slightly tart dark fruit notes. Lots of toasted malt buried in there. There is a slight smokiness in the finish accompanied by black coffee. It's medium bodied with a light/medium amount of carbonation. Not my favorite, but it's not terrible by any stretch of the imagination.

A-Pours a very dark brown; nearly black. Actually, the light penetrates this beer quite easily. Very thin head. Light lace.

S-Nose is fairly silent. Far too sheepish. I'm not going to pretend to pull out any specific aromas; its dead!

T-Flavor is a hair better. Light chocolate. Yeast. Soft roast. Flat cola. Burnt.

M-Thin and the carbonation is lively and nearly aggravating.

O/D-Offensive in its blandness. Imperial Porter huh?

Poured from 12oz bottle into tulip. Nice jet black color with some tan head. Sweet boozey malt crisp aromas. Good roasted malt and sugary sweet flavors. Its a bit watery or thin, but nice flavors. Good value for such a strong porter with good flavor. While not the best, its nice to have another 6-pack solid porter to go to.

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter. No freshness date.

A- Pours a 99% opaque black color with a 1/4 inch light tan head that fades fast down to a thick ring around the edge of the glass and light wisps of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing slides slowly down the glass.

S- Sweet but boozy aroma with notes of molasses, brown sugar and chocolate.

T- Nice even flavor of mildly roasty malt with some syrupy caramel sweetness. Also some vanilla, chocolate and even hints of raisin. Very drinkable and not nearly as boozy as the aroma lets on.

M- Soft, creamy and semi-robust. Medium-low carbonation and a mostly full body. Sticky afterfeel.

O- Easy to drink and one of the more exciting porters I've had since usually they leave me craving the full execution of a stout. This one's in a class all its own.
