Pours pitch black with a tan head. Malty nose with mild coffee tones. Flavor is heavy on coffee with a nod toward grinds, to be precise. Thick malts are there too of course. Feel has a good carbonation and a nice thick liquid feel. Very drinkable, though extremely hearty and robust and might be a bit too much for some. If it weren't for this beer, my tastings at the Publick House would have been a complete waste of time.

EXCELLENT beer! Pours a thick, black color with a slight white head; does not leave a lot of lacing on the glass. The smell gives off a smokiness and lots of malt/hops. The taste follows suit, with a mild bitterness but refreshingly smooth. Probably the best beer I've tasted at the Publick House. GREAT session beer for a porter because it is not too bitter. Nice robust, smoky, oak flavor to it.

Poured a black hue with a two finger creamy caramel colored head. There was good lacing and retention.

The smell featured a strong burnt grain aroma with hints of coffee and mocha.

The taste consisted of an upfront burnt grain with a coffee bitterness and subtle cocoa sweetenss.

The mouthfeel was full with a dry finish.

Overall a very drinkable and sessionable porter. An excellent example of the style.

It gets tiresome to say and hear, but Southy keeps cranking 'em out.
One of the best porters I've ever had. It's really hard to make a porter complex, but this one gives it a go. The major flavor characteristic of this that most other porters do not have is vanilla. Now I've had the Magic Hat Ravell, and I feel it is a bit sickly sweet. Not my thing. Vanilla in general can be extremely overpowering.
Not sure if this was brewed with vanilla, but it offers just the most subtle hint of it before being swallowed whole by a bittwersweet coffee roastiness, more bitter than sweet.
I could drink this stuff all night.

Excellent. Like Fullers London Porter, maybe even better. A very dark blood red colour that almost looks like opaque black. The aromas are excellent and consist of milk chocolate, strong coffee, caramel, a bit of vanilla, roasted malts, and oily hops. The taste is very roasty up front, with some oily hops in the middle and a lovely blast of chocolate and coffee in the finish. The mouthfeel is thick, but perfect for the style, and the drinkability is awesome as well. After the Belgian white this makes me a believer again. Long live Southampton.

Sampled on draught at SPH.

Appearance: A dark, solid brown that is nealy opaque with a 1 1/2 creamy, beige head. Very nice, thick webs of lacing around the glass.

smell: charred malt, grease, bacon fat, buscuity malt, rich toffee. Simply heaven. What a porter should smell like. Inviting, and nearly warming through smell alone.

Taste: Thick, rich malt, creamy toffee with a slightly bitter charred taste. Wonderful pair with a burger and I imagine ever better with a steak. The flavors seemed to dance with my burger, both enhancing each other and become better together than they were individually.

Mouthfeel: A little dry from the bitterness, not quite heavy enough to be a meal itself, but close.

Drinkability: Wonderful, quite possibly the perfect porter.

Dark brown in color with a 1" head. The aroma delicious as roasted malt and some coffee tones made the nose happy. The flavor was equally pleasing as big roasted malt, caramel, and coffee tones were all well balanced. Some mild bitterness was detected. The carbonation level was perfect.

The mouthfeel was smooth and the roasted malt lasted long into the finish. Medium bodied and decent lacing developed. A great full flavored and toasty version of a porter.
