All right! Another Keller/Zwickel! This obscure style is really hard to find, but I remember really enjoying the few that I've had.

A - This one is slightly hazy, dull yellow/bronze, and topped with a two finger fluffy white head. Lots of fluffy lace is spattered all about the glass, and head retention is stellar.

S - Understated pilsener notes (saaz hops, salt, and crackers), with a very mild complexity. Salt water (like the ocean waves), vanilla, and gentle caramel.

T - Whoa. This is SALTY. This reminds me of swishing with salt water when I was a little kid with a sore throat. This is medicinal, plastic-y, salty, slightly sour, and odd as hell. I kinda like it, but its extremely weird! I'm getting this flavor that reminds me of the way that the inside of a plastic bag smells, or the way my dog's rubber toys smell after sitting out in the sun on a hot day. I don't dislike it, but its gonna take some getting used to. Some mineral notes are there too.

M - Light bodied, clean, refreshing, and slightly dry on the finish. Actually, now that I think about it, this is VERY dry at the finish. Almost powdery, but very very soft.

D - Odd. That's for sure. I like it, and the odd flavors add complexity rather than disappoint. Not bad, but not as good as the other Keller/Zwickels that I've had.

This German bomber pours a cloudy urine yellow with three fingers worth of bleach white head that holds tight for a good miniute before deflating to a thin covering, with lots of big sticky sheets of lacing left as proof. This is much less impressive to the nose(the eyes may have stolen the show). I't smells like a funky straw bale, some wet grassy notes as well. The taste is on the way back up,but not by much...a lot of grain and subtle grassy undertones. A touch of sweetness helps this one to a pretty average taste score. The body is light and the carbonation is almost non existant with a slightly dry finish. This is decent beer, seems like it could be well above the average mark,if it was fresh.

Yeasty sunflower topped by a good looking cotton white cap. The head is dense and lasting despite the fact that very few bubbles are making their way to its underside. A few spatters of lace are the sum total of glass coverage at the moment, but I have a feeling that more is on the way (note: there's very little as it turns out). This is a decent enough looking beer if you like them unfiltered.

The nose is less than impressive, largely because it's a dead ringer for a Euro pale lager. I smell untoasted pale malt with an infusion of stale, musty, noble hops. I'm not sure what the hop bill consists of, but it provides little in the way of pizzazz. A slight spiciness helps.

Landbier is an okay version of the style, although I've had better. There's an acceptable mix of lightly sweet grain and firmly bitter hops, without a great deal of flavor provided by either one. The beer lacks depth and breadth, and, therefore, has a narrow range of flavors. That isn't necessarily a bad thing where beer is concerned unless the flavors that live in that narrow range aren't all that appealing. As in this case.

The finish is short and relatively clean, due mostly to the light (although not too light for the style) mouthfeel. A fine-bubbled, understated amount of carbonation does nothing to perk things up. I'm as excited about the mouthfeel as I am about the flavor. This bottle may have seen fresher days, but I wouldn't know since the month graphic isn't notched. There's no year indicated anyway.

I much prefer landfood (beef, chicken, pork) to seafood (fish, shrimp, lobster). However, it looks like I prefer seabeer (IPAs) to landbier (Holzhausener). Okay, that was a little forced, but I'm struggling to come up with anything interesting to say about this beer. Because it isn't. Interesting, that is. At all.

Presentation: Just like the bottle in the BA Database Avatar. A 500ml brown glass bottle with no freshness, bottled on date or even strength.

Appearance: Very pale yellow golden body which is perfectly clear. Huge frothy white head forms a pillowy cloud like 1” thick surface, it rescinds but not by much it seems to have great staying power. Excellent levels of dissolved carbonation throughout, even a gentle swirl is enough to reinstate an extra ¼” on the settled head. Looks good in the Handled Mug.

Nose: Has quite a grain laden Pilsner malt aroma mixed with a flowery hop character that has a very clean fresh aroma.

Taste: I like the balance in this one, it is the one thing that stands out, solid pilsner-like malt start which is grainy, the middle is dry yet flowery and still grainy, whereas the ending is dry, yet floral with a delicate bitterness that has a very sleight acidic lemon character. The weighted averages of the contributing flavors make for a nice profile in this one.

Mouthfeel: Dry at times. Has an average feel in the mouth start to finish. Light enough to be refreshing and quaffable, but with enough body to remain interesting and never a burden.

Drinkability: Thoroughly refreshing with a clean palate that nevertheless has a nicely balanced profile that shows equal facets of the grainy Pilsner malts and the light flowery hop character.

Overall: A very clean drinking fresh tasting nicely balanced Lager. Quite impressed with one, I could easily polish off several of these in one sitting.

Poured from a 500ml bottle just like the one in the picture into a an imperial pint glass. Despite a rather aggressive pour, I was rewarded with only a miniscule white head that fizzled out to a thin ring in near-record time. The color was a light peachy hue, slightly hazy thanks to a bit of sediment only noticed when I reached the bottom of the glass.
The nose had notes of grainy malt and a hint of wheat, more grainy malt, and well, more grainy malt. A suggestion of floral hops was noted but was vastly outweighed by the malt aspect. Ditto on the taste; lots of husky, modestly sweet malt flavor that lasted throughout. The problem was all that maltiness washed out any hops balance that might have been present. And so, it seemed to be out of balance in favor of the malt character. The feel was light and possessed a slight grittiness.
Well, this offering from Aktien-Brauerei Kaufbeuren had me thinking, "yeah, this is a beer, nothing more; nothing less." It struck me as too one-dimensional to be truly enjoyable.

Light crystal clear straw color. Nearly pure white head. Biscuit and wheat aroma with some low level hops that lean toward spicy. Deceptively flavorful given the light body and color. Interesting chameleon-like changeability in flavor as I drink. Starts out biscuity, turning to grassy, spicy then subtly sweet and smooth. Refreshing, flavorful lager.
