Appearance – Pours into my tulip with a dark black color and two fingers of lovely looking mocha colored head that dissipates slowly leaving nice lacing.

Smell – A heavy dose of bittersweet cocoa, toasted malts, slight coffee and vanilla, and oats.

Taste – Spot on to the aroma. A wonderful roast characteristic up front mixed with bitterness from it, which then becomes the bittersweet cocoa. Not much sweetness here to be honest (a positive as long as the beer isn’t ashy and completely without any sweetness i.e. Teddy Bear Kisses). Coffee, a bit of licorice and dark fruits.

Mouthfeel – Medium bodied, creamy, and nice carbonation.

Overall – The price tag was left on, and at 3.99 a bomber, holy cow. A fantastic beer for that price. I’m hard pressed to find a better value for a beer.

Appearance – Pours pretty much pitch black, mayyybe dark brown. A small dark creamy head which disappears quick.
Smell – Roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, oats.
Taste – Dark chocolate sort of bitterness, bold roasted coffee beans, subtle oatmeal.

Ah yes, it was a rather cold and bitter, rainy day today so I thought I’d indulge in some blood warming beer and Ipswich Oatmeal Stout was the right place to start. Upon moving your nose toward the glass an aroma of roasted coffee and chocolate surround it strongly and you don’t need to smell it twice to know what this beer consists of (though it’s really damn pleasant so you might want to!) The taste brings on a bitterness that’s reminiscent of dark chocolate and coffee beans but the addition of oats gives this beer a balanced sweetness and a consistent velvety texture which makes it very easy to drink. This is a great beer to have alone or maybe with some dessert after dinner.
