The Maxwell's Scottish Ale is a great lighter style Scotch ale. Gives those who are afraid of the dark and good intro to malty awesomeness. This beer poured a dark amber without much head or lace. The smell and taste was bolster by a malt with slight roast goddness. The body was light and had smooth carboantion. Overall its a decent lighter dark beer,,,,call it mild dark>

Can't decipher the canning code. The can label notes this beer is 'Malty Sweet'. I'm sure.

Pours dark red with a helping of brown. Nice clarity, all things considered. The head sits proudly at well over a finger's height. Looks foamy, but not that coarse. Sits well, beige in color.

Roasty-toasty malt notes of toffee, cardboard, hard-tack candy, weird cherry, artificial red apple, caramel, and sweet meats. A bit bready with a lot of crust. A decent nose. Perfumey, for a Scottish Ale.

Drinks with notes of dry red apple, light roast, cardboard, dark fruits, and savory meatiness. Well-attenuated. Almost watery. A bit disappointing. Has a malty whip all the way through. Not much in the line of hopping.

Drinks a little too easy. Sacrifices flavor. Easy in the mouth, body-wise. Carries a medium weight. Carbonation wants to develop, but only manages the pace of the middle. Severely average. Not complaining about drinkability, though.

Not savory enough, due to the slight watery taste. Had a lot going for it, at first. Then, it died off into 'mellow land'. Take it or leave it. Either way.

Serving Type - Can

Appearance - Dark ruby tan/red tint, 1/2 inch creamy head, lots of lacing.

Smell - Faint roasty malts, some molasses, a little touch of caramel and hops. Not very aromic.

Taste - First sip is really roasty malts, some grapefruit hops, and some molasses. Tastes a lot like a English nut brown ale. There is a mild scotch note mixed in also. Pretty one dimensional with malts and sugars with some scotch.

Mouthfeel - Basically tongue gets malts, palate gets some hops and sugars. The finish is light and sweet. Aftertaste is malty, sugary and sweet.

Overall - Pretty simple, basic and easy drinking. About the mildest, lightest scotch ales out there. Nothing special, would be a nice starter beer for scotch ales.

Rivertowne : Maxwell's Scottish Ale

LOOK: Pours a deep copper with amber hues. Head is short lived and recedes to a ring around the glass. The can is adorned by a decorative label of a fish wearing a kilt to a backdrop of the city of Pittsburgh.

SMELL: Smokey roasted malt, caramels and toffee. Just a touch of molasses rounds out the snout.

TASTE: Rich malty flavor of caramel, toffee and toast. Bitterness is tame with a lemon tea like flavor. A hint of peat smoked malts comes through late. Rivertowne played it safe with this one, and it paid off. This replaces just about anything when it comes to tasty medium range offerings now available in cans, score! Camping beer.

FEEL: Surprisingly light for a Scotch ale, the body falls somewhere between light and medium. May be considered too thin by a scotch ale die-hard, but the lightness makes this a beer easy to imbibe.

OVERALL: I drank a six pack of this like nobody's business. Lighter bodied for a scotch ale, but with good malt flavor. To revert to the traditional, antique "schilling" scale, consider this a 60- schilling, which would indicate a Scottish ale of lighter body and strength.
