Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #36 (Jan 2010):

Mayflower's flagship beer. No, that was not a pun. It's their take on the English style.

An impressive head tops the crystal-clear golden boldness. Aroma skirts from a fresh fig note to citric minty hoppiness, to mild caramel confections. Big on smoothness, with a good level of carbonation to pass on some crispness as well. Earthy, woody, fruity and bitter with most of the flavor coming from the hops. Between each layer of hop is a layer of malt, which is big on toasted, caramel and rustic bready flavors. Nutty yeast with some fruitiness in the back takes that long walk with the slowly fading hops and malt. Bittersweet.

This is one very complex English Pale Ale. If it was a blind tasting, it would be hard to tell that it was American brewed. Set us up in front of a dart board with some pork scratchings and pickled eggs, and we'll be good for the night.

Serving type: poured into a pint glass

Appearance:
Highly filtered, clear bright cedar-bark color with an impressive head and light lacing.

Smell:
Up-front toastiness with light fruity hints at the end.

Taste:
Nutty and toasted, with strong hop flavor which peaks at a fairly low level of bitterness, but remains on the tongue.

Mouthfeel: Light-to-medium body. Leaves the palate feeling clean, because of the low alcohol content and the high carbonation.

Overall:
Mayflower Pale Ale contains the qualities of an enjoyable session beer- refreshing, highly drinkable, and nondescript. There's nothing particularly wrong with this beer in that light, and it certainly looks delicious, but the balance of flavors isn't such that I'd seek it out again. That being said, I'll enjoy a sunny spring evening with the rest of my 6-pack.

Going through the Mayflower selection lately, not sure why I have passed these up until now.

A- Slightly hazy orange body with a bit of a copper huge to it. A bubbly white head forms with a foamy overall texture and decent retention. Some lace forms at the top and a thin ring leaves sparse lacing.

S- A balance of the beer elements in the nose. A clean overall yeast lends just a few hints of light fruits like apple and white grape as well as some bread notes. The malt bill gives off caramel sweetness and cereal grain aromas. Just enough hops to balance.

T- Fruit flavors seem to make up a slight majority of the taste with notes of white grape, apple, raisin and a tiny bit of citrus. Toasted caramel malts and lighter grains add a balancing sweetness. The hop bill does have more of an effect here with a spicy, herbal and floral profile.

MF- More substantial body than many pale ales with a creamy overall texture. The carbonation level is moderate and there is a nice hint of bitterness in the finish.

Malt and yeast contributions seem to be more important to this beer than many American Pale Ales. The caramel flavor and hop use reminds me of many English examples.
