Had this at the VIP room of the Emerald Coast Beer Fest.

Poured a deep red with a foamy head that fades fast but leaves good lacing.

The aroma is of rich honey, spice, and dark caramel. Dark fruit notes peak through with hints of vanilla and bourbon. Low profile, earthy hops are almost lost.

The flavors flow just like the nose with cherry hints to big, rich honey, ripe apple, orange blossom, dark fruit notes, vanilla hints and bourbon burn.

Deep, rustic, rich and sweet. Malty, boozy and balanced nicely.

Very rich, decadent sipper.

On tap at Florida Brewers Guild Fest 2007.

Pours a deep copper with lasting tan head. Sweet malt and dark fruit aroma. Flavor is smooth and drinkable with semi sweet pine hops, roasted malts, dark fruit and a hint of maybe pale malts. Slight sense of the ABV.

12/02/06 Walk the Line Barleywine Festival, Dunedin, FL.
2001 vintage sample from a keg. Hazy amber color with tan head. First sense of the aroma seemed to be oak or vanilla. My second sniff didn't pick that up at all. The aroma became more sweet malts and dark fruitiness. Really soft hop flavor with some malt sweetness and fruitiness. This one seems like it just recently passed its prime.

The 2000 sampled from a keg actually tasted a bit brighter with more assertive hoppiness and fruity cherry/grape flavor than the 2001.

The 1997 sampled from a keg had no head and almost no aroma. The flavor was nice though and I thought the best of the three. There was a toffee note that mixed well with the dark grape fruitiness and hops.

Appearance: Pours a hazed, dark amber body with a smallish, frothy, bone white head.

Smell: Toasted caramel maltiness with light, easy-going wafts of booze, citrus, and apricot juice.

Taste: Lightly toasted caramel with a candylike sweetness allow in a minor citrus hop character and a fairly mild bitterness considering the style. Of course, let's not forget the tongue pinch of alcohol. Hint of apricot. Finishes bittersweet with a warming alcohol presence.

Mouthfeel: Medium-full body. Medium-low carbonation.

Drinkability: Here's the thing about McGuire's Pub's Barleywine: it's kind of a barleywine lite. It's easy on the malt depth and certainly light on the hops and bitterness. Like Budweiser: "The difference is drinkability."

Darker amber, and cloudy with a thin white head. The head held together for a few moments, then was gone. Big fruity, malty aroma. Notes of toffee, and fig, with a bit of citrusy hops. Good amount of sweetness in the front, with a huge amount of fruity flavors. Dark fruits, toffee, and fig. A bit warming from the alcohol, but not boozy. Nice amount of citrusy bitterness, but balanced overall. Seems more lake an English style to me. Medium body. Very nice.

Presented in an attractively packaged brown 12 oz bottle with a substantial gold foil wrap over the neck and bottle cap. No date; this one came from the 2006 batch. Clever labeling on both sides: “I’ll have what the gentleman on the floor is having. McGuire’s Irish Pub, Barley Wine, Pensacola Florida” on front label, “Warning: This is a manly beer. If you are a wimpy, bed wetting, Bud Light drinker, it's not too late to change your mind. Otherwise, please enjoy the finest beer I've ever made. --Steve Fried, Brewmaster" on back label.

Into the cervoise a medium transparent ruby red color with high carbonation level of tiny Champaign-like bubbles. One finger light brown-tan head fades at a moderate rate leaving a solid cap and scattered, spotty lace. Definite clean alcohol scent on the nose, not surprising at 10.5% ABV. Sweet, cherry-like malt also noted. Taste clearly grows in complexity as the beer warms: a warm alcohol presence is joined by toasted and sweet malts with a heavy, dark fruit (cherry?) flavor. Dry, bitter finish. Moderately hoppy. Strong alcohol presence throughout. Mouth is semi-syrupy, with soft carbonation; it feels smooth and wet on the palate. Drinkability is good but is marred by a brutish alcohol presence that is somewhat muted as the beer warms. One 12-ounce bottle is plenty.

Overall: A solid barley wine but not exemplary. Definitely worth a try.

NOTE: As of 10/2/07 per brewmaster Mike, this beer is no longer being produced or bottled. However, this may change in the future.

Thanks BRoss!

Great looking beer...terrific... dark brown, smallish white head. Wonderful swirl. Look awesome.

Aroma is very fine. Maple, whiskey, fig, toffee, caramel, hops, molasses, alcohol, smokey... a nose-full. Quite nice.

Clean and smooth palate. Slight burn on the swallow... slow, sweet/semi-dry finish. Flavor lingers and lingers.

A bit thinner than I was expecting on the flavor, but still... high marks. Dried fruit, caramel, alcohol... a winner.

Got this ol’ goodie from BRoss242 in BIGsBIF, thanks! And the label clearly names this one: “I’ll have what the gent on the floor is having”

Guess the brewpub bottled up some of their brew, lucky me, cause this one hit the spot! Pour started things off; a clear mahogany brown, strong pop of ivory head – and good sheet lacing all the way down the glass.

Good whiff of toasted malts and winter spices. Quaff was a kicker; toasted doughy bread in a strong malty backbone. But yum, the best part was the sour mash cask bourbon undertones – just great. On the sweet side.

Very oily and full bodied, and at either 9.5 or 10.5% (label has a little crease right at the numbers), this one made for a fine evening sipper.

I would luv stopping off at McGuire’s in Fl for a few more of these and sampling his other brews.
