12oz. bottle with a star and a gear behind it. Wrapped around the star is a deadly coral snake (red meets yellow) with its mouth open and ready to strike. Surrounding this picture is the mandatory US info and a description of the beer. A brewed date or vintage year would have been nice. Served in a Peg's Cantina Snifter.

From behind the snarling coral snake was a beer that was black as coal or as black as the heart of the evil snake on the label. When I held this beer up to the light, all I saw was a reflection of myself in the glass. I even think the mighty sun would have trouble shining through this beer. On top of this barrel aged beauty was a short lived tiny head of foam. I'm pretty sure the color of the foam was dark tan. It didn't bother to stick around. It only managed to leave behind a small handful of rings along the side.

The aroma of this barrel aged Imperial Stout was more sweet than roasted. Kicking off the aroma was some lightly roasted malts. Once it got that out of the way, in comes the slightly sweet aromas of dark chocolate, a pinch of black licorice, roasted coffee beans, a smidgen of toffee, and a few raisins. After the raisins, in comes the charred oak, a drop of bourbon, and a whiff of vanilla.

While the aroma was over the border on the sweet side, the taste was more dry and roasted. Like the aroma though, it was again the dry roasted malt that kicked off things. Right after the malt was the dry roasted coffee beans. Once the taste got dry roasted elements out of the way, the taste then let through dark chocolate, black licorice, some raisins here and there, a pinch of toffee, charred oak, a thimble of bourbon, and a very subtle taste of vanilla at the finish line.

This was a full bodied Imperial Stout with a little carbonation and a dry roasted aftertaste. The aftertaste was chock full of dry roasted malt and coffee, a drop of toffee, dark chocolate, charred oak, and a dab of vanilla and bourbon. This aftertaste will linger on the roof of your mouth for some time.

I would like to thank one of my Philly friends who gave me this beer in a trade. While the aroma liked the sweetness, it was the taste that liked dry roasted flavors. Not my favorite barrel aged Imperial Stout, but its not bad. I heard that its a very affordable barrel aged beer. That's certainly a plus!

From 05/08/13 notes. Bought this a couple weeks ago in Middletown, NJ at Spirits. 12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

a - Pours a pitch black color with two inches of dark tan head and low carbonation evident. Looks like a great stout.

s - Smells of roasted malts, toasted malts, burnt malts, dark chocolate, vanilla, oak, light bourbon, and light dark fruits. Was a bit muted at first but as it warms up it gets much better, and the bourbon is light, but finally comes out.

t - Tastes of roasted malts, dark chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak, sweet dark fruits, toasted malts, bread, molasses, and some burnt malts. Taste is sweeter than the nose and has a little more bourbon, though it still isn't overpowering. Pretty nice and a slight step up from the nose.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Body is smooth and somewhat thick. Pretty nice.

o - Overall a really nice BA stout from Allentown; I've only had a few of their beers but this is my favorite so far, by far. The nose and taste get a ton better as it warms up, and some nice light sweet bourbon throughout. Worth checking out, would get it again.

12oz bottle courtesy of Beeradelphia (thanks Ryan!) poured into mason jars and shared with my brother 4/6/2013 while watching Michigan defeat Syracuse to go to the NCAA title game.

Aroma: Smells like oak with some dark chocolate sweetness emanating. A little bit of vanilla and bourbon but its mostly the chocolate and wood. Definitely a substantial aroma but not super overwhelming. Smells nice and inviting. (4)

Colour: Looks great. Dark black, cola coloured when illuminated. Pours with a nice 2cm tan head that sticks around for a long while and leaves a tan film on the surface of the beer that persists nicely. Lacing is non-existent, but it's probably more to do with the improvised glassware than the beer's composition. (4)

Flavour: Dark chocolate, molasses, oak, roast maltiness and bourbon in descending order of strength, with a nice bourbon and oak finish that leaves my mouth somewhat dry. There isn't a ton of bourbon but that makes it a supporting characteristic that contributes more complexity to the beer. I very much enjoyed drinking this one. (4)

Mouthfeel: Thinner side of a full body, nice and creamy feel that leaves the mouth dry and wanting more after each swallow. Carbonation is decent, nothing special. There isn't much burn at all, though more of it is on the back end as the beer warms up. Very good and enjoyable to quaff. (4)

Overall: A nicely done, slightly more sessionable bourbon barrel imperial stout that is nice to drink while watching a basketball game with my brother. It's not quite a sipper, but its not quite a quaffer either. It's a nice mix with balanced components that make for an enjoyable drink. It's not the most complex, its not the most bourbon barrel-y, it's not the biggest beer, but it's a well-done effort by a local Pennsylvania brewery. Thanks a ton to Beeradelphia for including this as an extra in a trade. (4)

Poured into a tasting glass

A: Pours an opaque black with a tan creamy head that slowly builds

S: Hints of chocolate on the nose with a slight bourbon

T: tastes sweet on the tongue with a dry roasty finish after swallowing. Hint of bourbon lingers

M: Feels smooth and does not have a whole lot of carbonation on the tongue, but does prickle a little bit on the finish. Slight burn from the abv afterward.

Overall: This is a great beer! Dispite the abv I could probably drink quite a few of these. Not a ridiculous overwhelming bourbon flavor like some bourbon stouts have. I am a big fan of bourbon and of stouts, so this beer is right up there on my list!
