Served in straight pint glass. Poured a clean, clear light mahogany color with 1/2 inch of tan head that had low retention and lacing.
The aroma was mostly sweet malt, with some very light spiciness and hopping. On the tongue, the aspects were mostly the same. There was the addition of a very soft roast taste.
The body was smooth and even, and although a bit low on carbonation, was pretty typical for the style. Drinkability was good, I'd have a couple of these. Overall, a nice take on the style, worth a shot if you see it.

Poured slightly chilled into a pint glass.
Pours a deep brown with red highlights and about a quarter inch light tan head even with a fairly aggressive pour. Head quickly recedes but does leave moderate lacing on the glass.
Smells mainly of carmelized sugars a hint of winter spices.
Tastes is malty and sweet, with a hint of coffee and spice, mainly nutmeg. A good dose of piney hops follows through.
A fairly heavy, creamy body with light carbonation and little alcohol bite.
All around a nice beer, although as others have stated, not one I would necessarily classify as a winter warmer.

First impressions are always a tenuous thing. One must be memorable without being pushy, attentive without being clingy and mysterious without being frigid. Upon my first examination of this grumpy little beer, I was delighted with the color and carbonation characteristics. If it weren't for the meager brownish head, one could easily mistake its appearance for that favorite of mixers, Coca Cola.
In taste however there is no mistaken for its sweet doppelganger. It's bold initially with a warm and slightly pine treeish tone expected of winter ales. However the boldness soon dissolves into something closer to an IPA rather than that of a strong ale. The hops linger much longer than is welcomed as well but with a strange and melancholy hint of more playful malts with each exhale.
The maltyness opens up more as the beer warms to room temperature but the hops are still over powering after the initial flavors run over ones taste buds. Overall I would not sample this again, mostly on the principle that while hops are great not all beers should be an IPA derivative which is a common failing I find in the northwest.
This beer is acceptable but hardly a brown or winter ale as claimed by the cantankerous gnome on the bottle.
Label - 4.0
I include this with each bottle/can review because I feel that for the average consumer to even approach an unknown beer, it's the packaging that entices rather than the actual end product. Points are given for Style, Readability, Tasting Notes, Brewers Notes and Ease of Reuse(removability)

A unbelievably aggressive pour only gives me…MAYBE a finger of head, a little under a finger. The head is mostly medium bubbles, with some big bubbles, and some small ones clearly hidden under all that. The head is slightly off white, but for sure not what I would consider light brown. The lacing looks like it might be alright, but I really can’t tell until I get down the glass. Head retention isn’t bad, I still have a little bit of head left. The body is an extremely dark shade of brown, there are some lighter shades of brown around the edges, perhaps some tan, and maybe a tiny bit of black even, in the middle. The beer is dark, but it also seems pretty cloudy, so hopefully it’s a thick beer too. Visibility through the beer is pretty much zero, and I can’t see the carbonation. Overall, it’s not a bad looking beer, the beer was very reluctant to give me any head, and when I got some the bubbles were pretty bit, still it lasted a decent amount of time, and the body was very interesting. We’ll see how the lacing goes, but so far it’s not bad. The smell is somewhat odd, for sure interesting. The first thing I get is a lot of malt, for sure some standard brown ale, and winter warmer type malts, dark but not too dark. However there is also another malt smell, burnt, almost stale smelling. It’s like they were trying to make a winter warmer, then changed their mind and wanted to make a Rauchbeir, and then maybe added some coffee in it or something. It’s a really freaking off smell. Is it bad? Not all of it, some of it smells nice, but part of it for sure doesn’t smell great. Perhaps some spices in here, cinnamon, maybe coffee like I said, or even chocolate. Very VERY little in the way of hops, I mean I can barely detect any and it’s 65 IBU’s, so I dunno what’s up there. It’s starting to smell a little bit better, slightly more balanced, and not quite all over the place, but still, it’s not amazing. Coffee is actually coming out quite a bit now, anyways. A 3.5 is a little generous, but it just barely gets there I suppose. That’s actually not a bad beer at all. Up front there is a very nice malt character, not funky or all over the place at all. It’s a pretty rich malt flavor, for sure very present, but not over the top. Not to dark either, it’s just about what a winter warmer, or a brown ale should have. The hops are also for sure here, not as present as the malts, but they are easily noticeable none the less. I don’t know if I would say 65 IBU’s, but it’s damn close. There may actually be some coffee in here too, it’s not just malts and hops that’s for sure. Other flavors may be coffee, toffee, cinnamon, maybe even chocolate. It’s a very small cast of supporting flavors so it’s hard to identify. The beer is a little rough around the edges, but honestly I think that’s just a harsh way of saying it’s a mans beer! The hops are coming through and it’s getting to what it should be. Overall it’s not blowing my socks off, but I appreciate the array of flavors, and I also appreciate the increasing hop bitterness. It’s not a 4, but it’s pretty darn close. The mouthfeel is pretty nice too. The body is pretty damn thick, which I always love in my beers. The carbonation isn’t too big or too small, for sure on the smaller end, but it completely works for the style. The drinkability isn’t that bad, yes the hops are bitter, and yes there is a tiny bit of an alcohol presence, but overall it’s not hard to put down, especially considering it’s 6.8% ABV. Overall it’s a much better beer than I remember it being and a much better beer than I thought it would be when I smelled it. Not an amazing beer, but it has a very bitter hop character, and some complex flavors. Not a bad beer at all.
The appearance turned out to be…ok. There really wasn’t much in the way of lacing, a little bit stuck to the glass, but it was patchy at best. I wanna give this beer a 3.5 for appearance just because it had a nice interesting body, but it really doesn’t make up for the bad head and bad lacing, so 3.
