Reviewed from memory - on tap at World of Beer in Arlington, VA

Pours asphalt black with limited, but iridescent lacing.

Tropical and floral aromatics.

Taste of sweet, tropical fruits. A porter/ dark beer that can be enjoyed during the hot days of summer. Coconut is present, but not overpowering.

The beer has a smooth, creamy opening and sweet, bitter finish.

Tired of having IPAs and belgium whites all summer? Try this refreshingly excellent coconut porter that is sessionable even during those hot muggy dog days of summer.

A: Very dark brown or black. Light brown head of fine bubbles that dissipates quickly.

S: Coffee, roasted malt, dark chocolate. Low spicy hop aroma.

T: Roasted malt, coffee, dark chocolate. Spicy hop bitterness. Finishes with some hop bitterness but mostly that coffee/chocolate malt flavor. Tasty.

M: Full bodied and creamy. Medium carbonation. Slight astringency on the finish, hop derived probably, but could come from use of roasted grain. Not excessive.

O: Well balanced specialty porter. While the coconut didn't come through as its own flavor, it did lend to the overall sweetness. This would be a great on a cold winter night by the fireplace.

Had it in Maui on tap at Monkey Pod.
Appearance is appealing. Deep brown, almost black tint even when held to the light. Light brown creamy head.
Aroma was a bit disappointing for me. I was really looking forward to this beer. Smells of coconut, chocolate, smoky aroma. However, was not aromatic enough. It had a great aroma, but it was too subtle.
Taste is also good. Slight coconut, stronger chocolates and coffee flavors. The problem I have with this beer is that the flavor falls off as soon as you swallow it. No lingering flavors like a porter should have. Even the mid taste flavors seem far too tame to me.
Mouth feel is as a porter should be. Full to medium bodied.
Overall, this beer did not impress me at all. It's not bad, however, it does not live up to the reputation it seems to have "earned" in my opinion. It a weak flavored porter that leaves something to be desired.

Had this on tap in a pint glass at Vivo! in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Completely different from the tap compared to the can. Loved it this time! Pitch black, chocolatey looking with a thin dark head. Sweet Kona coffee flavor with a bit of bitter chocolate in the aftertaste. Foams up nicely when you spin it, releasing some macademia nut scents.

A: Dark brown, almost black color. Poured a 1 finger light brown head that dissipated to an even skim that was thicker on the edges. Laced in thin, running sheets.

S: Chocolate, coffee and toasted coconuts. Also roasted nuts and peaty/earthy flavor.

T: Toasted malts; chocolate, caramel and nuts. Coconut, coffee and molasses in the middle. Finishes somewhat dry with a lingering sweetness.

M: Light to medium body. Low carbonation. Smooth, rich and creamy.

D: Good flavor and balance. Very easy to drink.

Oregon Brewer's Festival in a mighty plastic mug.

appearance - dark with tan head, medium head, good retention

smell - coconut and roasty malt along with a bit of chocolate on the nose

taste - coconut, chocolate, roasted malt profile, big and flavorful, earthy

mouthfeel - medium body, not too light, just about right for a porter, exceptionally smooth

drinkability - smooth and rich, great for the style

On tap at Pizza Port OB, San Diego.

Pours a shiny black color with no head whatsoever, just a few specks of foam. Seriously smells of cocoa and coconut. Normally I would not be a fan, but something here works to make it quite enjoyable. The taste starts out the same, but after a bit you get some really nice roasted malts coming in to help balance it out. Really smooth, and with a lighter body than I'd expect for a porter, but it goes nicely with the flavor. Definitely a bit on the sweet side, but not too much. For some this could be a great introduction to craft beer or darker beers. For me it is a totally refreshing beer - I probably wouldn't have more than 1-2 at a time, but you can be sure that I'll be picking up some cans of this, and trying some of the brewer's other beers.

01/12/08- Had on tap at a local restaurant in Kauai.

Presentation- Via the tap into a 12oz glass.

Appearance- A light off brown colored pour, followed by a 1/2 inch head which leaves a bit of lace trails in it's wake.

Smell- A bit of heavy roasted malt, a bit of very dark chocolate and a minor touch of coconut.

Taste- All the flavors are there, but some of them aren't prevelant enough. The roasted malt really comes through the most and covers up the other flavors. Dark chocolate and coffee mix and mingle, while the coconut really is downplayed here.

Mouthfeel- One of the most highly carbonated porter I have ever had. Wayyyy too many bubbles.

Drinkability- Cut down the carbonation and mix the flavors a bit better and you have a winning beer. As is, just ok. Would have again though if in Hawaii as there really isn't much choice.

The name itself warrants curiosity, and being a fan of coconut and the occaisional porter, I figured why not?Poured ino a snifter, it borders on brown/black, completely opaque, and pours a half finger of a tan supple head, lacing is average for a porter.

Aroma is toasty, roasty and coffee-like, with deep roasted malts and the toasted coconut sweetness playing a subtle part in the nose, and this becomes more apparent upon warming.

Taste is smooth and very rich with a pleasant roasted quality, and just a hint of the toasted coconut flavor for a semi sweet finish to round things out nicely.

Mouthfeel is medium to heavy, rich and creamy texture, superb carbonation to move the flavors along.

As long as you aren't expecting to drink a Mounds Bar, and enjoy porters, Maui Brewing Coconut porter is a well crafted and delicious concoction that has the ability to satisfy on a number of levels, and is a really nice way to end the day.

Source/Serving: 12oz can

S: Burnt bread crust, wet moss, toasted almonds, grill residue. Hints of toasted coconut, spruce, decaying leaves.

T: Slightly sweet, faintly tart up front that hits with a smooth rich toasty, caramel roastiness. In the perfect roast range between toffee and coffee/chocolate, which gives the roastiness some depth and richness. Creamy, oily and smooth. Coconut hits in the middle, clean and toasty, along with light coffee and a nice nuttiness. Little to no harshness from the roastiness or bitterness, but its well balanced and only slightly sweet. Acidity is faint. Faintly mossy hops. Moderately high body. Finish really shows off the coconut and nuttiness, with a lingering toasted bread and smooth chocolate note.

Notes: A well-organized brew

Interesting gimmick, but it goes a little overkill with the flavor… kind of like a hot sauce that gets its "reputation" from merely burning your tongue off. Would love to try it in draft form to see if perhaps it was just a bad batch (as it seems to be well regarded by everyone else on here), but I was wholly unimpressed with the canned variation. Love Maui Brewing Company's other beer though so I wouldn't talk anybody out of experimenting.

pours dark, barely passes the light thru the glass test - none got thru :). head dies quickly to a circle around the rim. faint lacing. aroma is hard to pin down for me, i think the coconut is throwing me off. for some reason i find it reminding me of firestone's velvet merlin, but with a (thankfully) faint hint of coconut. mouthfeel is a bit thin for my tastes, but i tend to like stouts a bit on the thick side. i'm glad i tried it, though i don't think i'll chase it down again. points for justifying their use of a can, rather than bottle, for several reasons (listed on can). an interesting brew to try, if only because it's different.

12oz can vigorously poured into a pint glass.

A- Poured a dark brown - almost black - color. Opaque with no highlights. A mocha-tan colored head, 1-finger, stays fluffy for a few minutes before fading to an oil slick. Not much lacing. I've drained a differential or two in my time that were long overdue for a fluid change and what poured out looked kinda like this brew. That is meant as praise.

S- Rich roasted dark malts show a powerful presence. There's some chocolate sweetness and some coffee. I don't pick up any hop smells, the darks are too prominent.

T-There's some coconut flavor on the back end. But this adds up to a coffee/chocolate porter for me. It's quite flavorful, nonetheless.

M- A bit thin and fizzy, but for a porter, that's ok. It does look like it would have more body.
Some hop bite gives way to a creamy smooth finish that's loaded with the malt/coffee/chocolate flavors.

O- I like that there is subtle coconut flavor here, rather than overkill. It's a flavorful and drinkable dark beer.

A: Pours a dark brown with a very fizzy light brown head. Head fades away at a moderate pace. Decent little chunks of lacing. Good head retention.

S: Sharp roasted malt, lots of char mainly. Trying to discern some coconut but can barely find it, may be the power of suggestion at this point. Sweet and creamy though, decent chocolate I think.

T: There's the coconut. Has sort of a toasted coconut going along with some char and a bunch of chocolate. Finish is a dry cocoa, a little coconut and some creaminess. Quite dry between sips. Very dry, almost tingling. Maybe some hoppiness that I can't quite place?

M: Light, smooth, creamy. Somewhat high carbonation.

O: Not a bad porter. Coconut adds a welcome level of complexity. Smooth and creamy without being too heavy. Easy drinking.

A: Very much like pouring a can of root beer: Clear, dark brown fluid, a solid finger of light-brown foam that fades a little quicker than I'd like, with almost no lacing on the walls of my mug.

S: Roasted malts front and center. Then the hops, citrus and piney. There's a little bit of coffee here, as well. As for coconut... maybe, but it's so faint that it could be my imagination because I'm searching for it.

T: Not what I expected, but quite good! Malts are toasty and slightly acrid, not sweet at all. Next comes a tangy mix of citrus and resin, surely from the hops. Then it backs off for a moment and I get just the hint of coconut before bitter and tangy hops show up again; the bitterness is the taste that really lingers, but not in a bad way.

M: Crisp, slightly chewy, and heavy on the carbonation (don't swallow more than a couple of gulps quickly or the burp from the first will be coming up as you're swallowing more!) There's a little dryness at the end, a little more than your average porter, but it just serves to make you want to take the next sip.

O: Not quite what I was expecting (I thought more coconut, less hops), but tasty nonetheless. More hops than your typical porter, but it works. Not an every-day beer for me, but one I'll definitely have again. I'm thinking this would pair perfectly with a steak!

Pours nice and dark out of the can, black ringed with flashes of deep brown and a rocky, one finger, sand colored head. Porters always have a nice color to them though.

Aroma is pretty pedestrian, roasted malts and coffee beans, little bit of vanilla, none of that toasted coconut yet.

Roasted flavors off the bat with some raw cocoa and a dull coffee bitterness which then gets smoothed out by warm toasted coconut. The flavor on the back end grows as the beer warms.

Low carbonation and a medium body, smoothness comes more from the coconut flavor rather than the liquid not much mouth coating here.

Drinkable brew but it soon becomes apparent that after 2 or 3 the game becomes how much coconut flavor can I get out the can before it becomes one dimensional. First beer I've tasted from Maui Brewing, the canned concept and beer are both winners.

It's not a secret that I hate coconut. However, I have had several coconut beers that I like. This, sadly, was not one of them.

Solid black pour with a small tannish head that mostly dissipated, leaving a few stray bubbles on top. Aroma of sweet chocolate, roasty malts, not a whole lot of coconut. Taste came off a bit like a Mounds bar, but I found it much too sweet, intense and cloying with sugary sweetness, like coconut candy (I'm assuming there is such a thing). It wasn't entirely bad overall, but just too much for me to handle. It's supposed to be beer, not a malty mixed drink. Body was medium. This one might be for some, but not for me.

Poured into a snifter from a can.

I had this before on tap but it seems a little better than I remember. Anyways, after the finger of head settles which takes a minute or two a slight film of tan lingers. The smell honestly reminds me of fresh cream and a little toasted malt. We know of course that the toasted smell is from the toasted coconut. The toasted coconuts really bring out the taste of the porter but it mellows it at the same time. It's good!

12oz can into a snifter

A: Pours a very dark brown with two fingers of light tan head.

S: Cocoa nibs, roasted malts, and coconut. A bit of caramel sweetness, and a touch of cardboard. Faint.

T: A touch of roasted malts, but extremely faint. I don't think I've ever tasted such a flavorless beer, including BMC.

M: Quite thin with average carbonation.

O: This is impressively flavorless. I've really never had a beer with such little flavor. I guess there aren't any flaws, though.

A: Pours a dark black with a thick dark brown 2-finger head that quickly dissipates and leaves a wispy lace and no trail down the glass.

S: Toasted malt aroma with a coconut, coffee, and alcohol background.

T: Smooth and sweet toasted malts and coconut flavor balanced by some bitter, hoppy, coffee scents and finishes slightly dry.

Served from a 12oz can into a Smuttynose pint.

Appearance- Black with a finger of mocha head that lasted about 30 seconds. Moderate lacing remains.

Smell- Roasty coffee, light toasted coconut, sweet chocolate malts, mild hop presence, cinnamon?

Taste- Roasty malts, light hops, light coconut, finishes with coffee. I want a little more coconut.

Mouthfeel- Lighter in body with ample carbonation. Probably a great beer to drink on the beach at sundown.

A-Pours a dark brown. Head is decently dark as well. Head bubbles down to a few foamy islands here and there.

S-Traditional Porter notes. Chocolate and coffee…not picking up much coconut sadly. I really wanted this beer to just wreak of coconut.

T-Again, mostly straight Porter. I do pick up some coconut but not nearly as much as I wanted. I also get a slight metallic twang too unfortunately. Its actually pretty good but if I tried this blind I know I wouldn't label this a coconut Porter.

M-Medium bodied. Lightly bitter. Drinkable with a good overall feel and bubbles that tickle.

O/D-Its still a solid beer but I would label this a big disappointment. I have always wanted to try this because I thought I would be getting some huge coconut notes. I leave this beer slightly unhappy. A good Porter, nothing more.

A: Pours a dark, dark brown - almost black. Aggressively poured a 3 finger fluffy tan colored head that hangs around in the glass for an eternity. Leaves an awesome lacing on the glass.

S: Wofts strong roasted malts and tons of dark chocolate. Also getting smells of black coffee.

T: The taste is really good, but I really don't get much coconut. I get chocolate and roasted malt, which is really good. I also taste a good deal of coffee. Finishes with a little bit of bitterness.

M: The body of this isn't great. I had to stop and remind myself that this IS just a porter, so it isnt supposed to be super full, but that's what I was expecting for the look. That being said, it's still a little light for my liking of a porter. The carbonation is good though.

O: Overall, an above-average beer, and I am glad I got to try it. If I wasn't expecting coconut I would've actually rated it higher, but I felt a little dooped by that expectation. Really good tasting, but I got very little coconut.

Thanks to Rutager for this one.

Poured from a 12oz. can, canned 090312.

Appearance: A very dark brown body with a creamy, milky head the color of a darker tan. Some lacing but would have liked a bit more.

Smell: Sweet roasted aroma, coconut is pretty front & center with a good whiff of cocoa as well.

Taste: Creamy coffee at first then shredded coconut and creamy cocoa pile on.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation a tad high but it's followed by a silky creaminess that's quite nice.

Overall: A real good flavored porter. Love coconut and this one showcases that very well.
