500 mL bottle poured into a snifter.
Appearance - Nearly pitch black body with a small, tan head. The bubbles are more Coca-Cola looking than beer looking, but when it settles it has a nice foamy ring that looks more familiar.
Smell - Roasty malts and some chocolate, but I swear I smell some lactose sweetness, which puts me off. Not an overwhelming aroma, but nice.
Taste - Roasty malts and some chocolate. Good flavors for what it has, but not a lot of complexity. The finish gets bitter and a little grassy. Combined is a sweetness that again I swear is lactose, but isn't off-putting the way it was in the aroma.
Mouthfeel - I like my bitter stouts to be thicker. This one has the bitterness of an RIS, but not the feel of it. Something to carry the stout flavors over the hop finish would be nice.
Overall - Not bad, not incredible. I'm looking forward to the Hr. Frederiksen.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color—only slight traces of red are visible near the bottom of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a short tan head that quickly faded away, leaving only a collar of moderate sized bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Moderate to strong aromas of licorice are present in the nose.
T: As in the smell, the stout is dominated by flavors of licorice and has additional notes of burnt malts and tobacco ashes.
M: It feels medium- to full-bodied and yet a little thin on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has a lot of complexities in both its aroma and taste for something that seems a little lighter in body than what you would normally expect. It kind of reminds me like a "lite" version of a Russian Imperial Stout.
