This beer was served from the tap at The Old Toad in Rochester, NY. The beer arrived in a 3/4 sized snifter and glowed the deepest chocolate brown. Due to the full pour there was only a half inch tall head of creamy tan bubbles. Carbonation appeared average, and no sediment was noted. The nose filled with the deepest char and smoke. There was raw dark chocolate, chalk, light honey, steely yeast and coffee, and soft lactic heavy creamer. On the back came some tart strawberry sweetness and hollow booze. Our first impression was that there was a smoky flavoring, but the feel was beautifully and surprisingly light. As we sipped, the flavoring opened with deeply smoked chocolate malts and white sugar sweetness. Soy sauce saltiness and fusel booze mixed in, both cutting and enhancing the big dark maltiness. The peak hit with booze and black cherries, lime rind bitterness, and sour lactics. The finish was all about the malts, with raw charcoal, chipped smoked hickory, metallic coffee beans, and tinny yeast bitterness. Despite all this, the finish was soft and soothing. The aftertaste breathed of that same char and smoke, coffee and raw chocolate, and general raw malt bitterness. The body was medium, yet soft and syrupy, while the carbonation was medium. The mouth was coated with wet cream and froth, but really it stayed nicely light to the touch. Ultimately the mouth was left dried, with a boozy juiciness down the tongue. The abv was appropriate, and the beer sipped rather slowly.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the contrast between the huge taste profile and the even, soft feel. There was nice sip to it, but most surprisingly it was light for the style, but appropriately so. All the smoke, booziness, and malts were there in the nose and the taste, but it was kept very drinkable by not being bogged down with heaviness. This is a must-try beer.

Lost my review, great...

Pours a nice black beer with dark brown around the edges. Great rocky head and retention.

Smells nice, some coffee, liquorice and some earthiness either from the malts of hops.
Some sweetness.

Overall a decent tasting beer but pretty bitter. I had difficulty finishing it.
It has some sweetness, it has coffee, liquorice and chocolate and an earthiness (from mainland/british hops together with the malts perhaps?).

Mouthfeel is medium, thin for the style.
Smooth though with medium-low carbonation.

Overall better than their IPA but pretty damn bitter, would go better in a 33cl bottle if you ask me.

In a box from GRG1313 - one of the many 'send me a label' boxes he's posted - that included Foothills Baltic Porter and vintage AleSmith Speedway Stout , this bottle more than held it's own. Thanks to GRG1313 for an amazing box of beer as well.

Rich flavor is malt-heavy with a lot of bitter chocolate. The mouthfeel is perhaps a bit watery at the end. Not 100% on the year this was bottled, but it's possible it just spent a little to long in the cellar. Doesn't impact the drinkability, but dings the overall score a shade.

Enjoyed this at just below room temp, and both the aroma and the flavor were robust enough to warrant a long, slow session with this bottle. Thoroughly enjoyed this and was reminded that finding a nice, simple, stout isn't always easy in the current market.

Also, there is zero chance you would peg this at 10.5%. I didn't believe the site and double-checked. Remarkably smooth and no trace of booze.

Pours an opaque black brown with a solid quarter inch mocha head that lingers as a thin layer of foam.

Roast malt, dark chocolate, booze, vanilla, and a hint of dark cherries form the sweet aroma.

Roast character dominates, with dark chocolate undertones and a bitter, espresso , peppery finish. There's an underpinning of dark berries. Nutty, toasted notes emerge as it warms.

Body is syrupy, with minimal carbonation, and an astringent finish. Alcohol warmth is pretty high.

A little harsh in the roast character, and not as complex as I hoped. Might improve with age. Bitterness is over the top.

It's with incredible complexity that Amager churns out a massive stout that becomes a tutorial in Russian Imperial Stout flavor profiling.

Black as night, the beer is strikingly opaque and with an onyx mirror sheen. As the beer releases a strong creme foam, the beer begins to blanket the glass with froth that settles in to a long lasting session and trails with broken mocha-stained lace.

Strong nutty fresh ground coffee evokes the senses with a culmination of earthy Turkish coffees. Fruit and vinous grapes provide a pronounced merlot scent equipped with tart alcohol, burnt fruit (cherries) and licorice. The scent is woven together by the underlying toffee aromas

Undeniable espresso flavors project early and coat the mouth with sweet roast flavors- bittersweet chocolate, roasted walnuts sink into the taste and develop into a long fudgy finish. Meanwhile, strong alcohol flavors emerge- bringing with them the vinous tartness of burnt cherries, currants, dry red wine and sharp acidity. The stout continues to develop, first to a high roasty coffee-like bitterenss and then to the sharper and more citrusy grapefruit peel to close.

The rather full body makes the most of creamy malt sweetness and diffused carbonation. But as the carbonation recedes, so do the effect of its malty body. It's then when the beer develops a dry brandy-like warmth, roasty dryness, acute tannin seemingly from roast and grain. An aftertaste of tart acidity ensures that the complexities are never ending- even well after the last sip.

This incredible stout is soothing to both the mind and the palate as new flavors are explored with each sip. Its a fantastic lesson in stout flavor that begins with the intimidating pour and ends with an echo of roast and wine.
