The atmosphere at Stub 'n' Herbs is highly variable, but I most certainly hate this place on a "game day" and is filled with obnoxious people. I prefer this place when it is not soooo busy. It has a mellow atmosphere with a good diversity of people. The bar and the booths that surround it are great, plenty of wood and cozy, but college craze...no thanks.
The menus and quality of beer offer plenty of options. There is even a beer school guide to with descriptions of different styles of beer. This bar with change in ownerships has really specialized in artisan beers with 32 taps and a cask beer seems to always be there too.
The food is more burgers and sandwiches than anything else, but I am in love with their burgers. They use pretzel buns that I first found utterly amazing from my trips to Chicago. Excellent burgers. I cannot speak for much else on their menu.
They have a long happy hour which seems to neglect the more limited craft beers, but that is still fine by me. Excellent beer selection that is always changing with a focus on Minnesota craft beers with plenty of Surly ammo.
The service is hit or miss depending on the time of day, the service from the bar is usually personable and prompt. If you're getting service at a table/booth it seems to be a female dominated staff here.

Stub and Herbs had the atmosphere of a aged pub in a trendy location, featuring an above average tap list and one of the best music selections I've experienced in a long time. Bartender was boring, slow and depressing, and a below average happy hour takes away from an awesome pub. The company surrounding my party was superb and makes me interested in what a busier night would look like. One to check out but until I investigate further it is not a pub I will be frequenting.

Located in Stadium Village - it's the best bar in the area. But, that isn't saying much still. Full of kids who don't know how to drink but it's stadium village so it's pretty quiet (in the summer, during the school year, ultra annoying). Cool lighting and seating - ol' fashion bar aesthetic.
The bartender gave me a free drink for not having any belgians in stock and he gave my friend a free beer since he was in the service.
Pretty good selection for the area. No one matches at least for a few miles.
But the people... Gah...

My favorite Beer Bar. Rotating taps, and lots of them. Great Grub - Fries are out of this world, pretzel buns are fantastic. Burgers and Buff Chix Sammy are mouthwatering.
Busy on Gopher Game Days.
Reagan the bartender is a boss. Waitress that use to be there looked a lot like T. Swift, which was nice.

Stub's is my favorite MN beer bar. They have a ton of rotating taps, beer savvy staff and they make a mean burger. Have had the opportunity to go there' for multiple release parties for things like Darkness and KBS among others. Their atmosphere is definitely that of a college bar but as long as you aren't expecting a fancy place, it is a lot of fun.

Located in Dinkytown on the UM campus. This place is a top three beer establishment in the university area. However, if you are going to UM game this is a the place to go PERIOD.
The downtstairs is creepy, don't go there. The service is prompt and friendly. The food is stadium fare, but overall is good.
However, the beer is the real star here. They have a good selection of popular or hard to find kegs of craft beer. They have special events like DARKNESS EVE. Clean taps and lots of volume ensure fresh beer.
If you are in the MN University area, this is a must hit.

Stub and Herbs is a college bar with good beer. Thus, the clientele consists mostly of college kids who have discovered good beer. The upstairs area is inviting enough, however, the basement area is dingy and creepy. Something about it just screams date rape parlor. The beer selection is top notch with a wide variety of styles including malty beers, hoppy beers, wheat beers, and Belgian style beers. Within the past year they have stopped carrying the rotating rare/unique beers they used to. Prices have also gone up in the past year. They used to have some of the best prices in town, but now they have some of the worst. Most of the beers they charge $6 for can be found elsewhere in town for $5 or $5.50. Service is good for the most part, and generally pretty knowledgeable about beer.
I'm rating the quality of Stub and Herbs so low due to the fact that they have received numerous food-safety violations from state food-safety inspectors. I'm certain that most, if note all, dinning establishments receive some violations. However, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported last spring (April 30th to be exact) that of 771 food-related businesses inspected Stub and Herbs had the eighth most violations including nine critical violations and 22 total. The Star Tribune article listed some of Stub and Herbs violations, and the one that stood out to me was "person in charge not knowledgeable." How am I to believe they have corrected their problems when the person in charge doesn't know what they are doing? For this reason I will not eat at Stub and Herbs.

Stub & Herbs has the weirdest and grossest bathroom I have had the displeasure to use in a very long time. Down the semi steep steps to the creepy basement into a disgusting meeting room with low ceilings, 20 year old carpet and mysterious doors. The bathroom itself is cold, damp, dark and dirty. Icky, for real. BUT, I did not got there to use the bathroom.
My first experience was over two years ago with my boyfriend and his buddy. We played darts and pool in their game room, which is spacious, has abundant natural lighting and we had a fabulous time. The food was basically a heart attack, or at least heartburn on a plate, but if you have enough to drink it is palatable. Great 2 for 1's on beers, which my company unashamedly took advantage of.
My next experience was at the bar to try some of their GREAT on tap selection--that night I had Mercenary, and Sublimely Self Righteous. The bar area screams dive-bar, a little too dark and grungy for my liking, and no where to set my purse, but the bartender was super nice, gave me lots of free samples and was having a great time changing up songs overhead. The waitress sang "Lovin' Touchin' Squeezin'" with me which made my night. Located on the U of M campus, there was a lot of juvenile flirting-lets hook-up kind of activity going on, which I could do without. I told some damn guy not to buy me a beer and he did anyway, so I walked off and left it on the counter. The food at the bar...how can it put this delicately...you want 10 bucks for an- I swear to god- artificially flavored spinach artichoke dip that looks and tastes like something I made when I was 9? And you give me ridiculous generic artificial crackers to dip? Dude, do you have any pride at all?
But alas, the reason why I will return to Stub & Herbs (aside from a very pleasant game room experience) --- excellent tap list. Frequently rotating taps, from Southern Tier, Goose Island, Avery, Stone and Founders to name a few.

Probably about time a put in my two cents after becoming a semi regular customer of the place over the past few years. Been lucky the last few times to nearly have the place to myself. Which is great, as they have board games set aside to play with your group while drinking the afternoon/night away. For when it gets busy, its busy as hell. Nuff said.
Depending on where you sit makes a bit of difference in lighting as there's dark lit booths in the middle, yet full window lit booths on the other side, which are all surrounding a standard square bar with about 4 to 5 seats on each side to sit. Then there's the back room which is made up mostly of tables and games. Plus a small patio out back for nicer weather. There has been a number of times however, when I've been in at slow times that it smells far too much like your average floor cleaner and the tables are damp from recent towel wipings. Same with the bar being damp. Needless to say, its unappealing. Dry them off please.
But Service here is pretty outstanding, very friendly and knowledgeable about all the great beers, specials, and overall staying on top of getting you your food and beers. When busy, they struggle a bit to keep up, but what place doesn't. Yet, even when busy, most times, I've still had pretty solid service for how busy it was. Heather is my favorite.
Awesome selection and turnover of speciality beers, with a ton of rotating taps of nearly every micro brewery that MN has available. Surly, Founders, Southern Tier, Alaskan, Flying Dog, Stone, Bell's, New Holland, and more. Perhaps a couple Belgian beers from time to time would help boost their selection right off the roof. Yet, its impressive when they get the special events going. Like nothing but Flat Earth with infusions of all their beers taking over all the taps. Or the Surly Darkness party. Wow! Great beers on-tap for those things! All with pretty damn good prices for what's offered, both on the beer and the food.
Overall, its a great establishment that knows how to keep anyone in the beer know very happy.
