American IPA |  6.50% ABV

Availability: Year-round. can (59), bottle (6), on-tap (1)

Notes:
Hop aroma and flavor dominate this IPA. However, the malt character of this deep amber colored ale nicely balances the hop component thus avoiding a harsh bitterness. Pure hoppiness!

A: Pours a nice amber hue from the can with an off white head. Okay retention and some nice lace.

S: Rich sweet malty aromas. Lots of caramel and brown sugar with subdued pine notes as well.

T: Malt forward. Bready with notes of candy malts. Hints of grapefruit and pine in the finish.

M: Medium in body, good level of carbonation.

D: A middle of the road IPA.

Took the family to Rapid City for a little vacation so figured I'd see what was available locally that I couldn't get in MN. Picked up a six pack of this and their Porter as well. It's an ok IPA, not great to me but certainly drinkable.
If I lived in SD would probably buy again.

Sampled from a can as well out of a bottle. Pretty much the same. Appearance is a amber colored hue with hints of light brown undertones. A fizzy white head with decent retention.

The aroma has a great hoppy nose with some minor malt notes overall. The hops have a nice citrus and grassy aroma to it. Some minor herbal notes but more balance. A good caramel malty note is there but more of a generic undertone to it which enhances the hops. Some dirty yeasty undertones but mostly clean.

The taste is similar. A good hop flavor upfront with a nice balance from the malt. The hops come out first with a good citrus and herbal quality. Some minor dirty off hop notes but overall great appeal. The malt comes out more vs the nose. A soft caramel and light bready taste. Some minor yeast notes but overall good. Limited bitterness though and would have liked some at least for more balance.

The body is moderate to light. Good for style. A good carbonation if not just a touch much but ok. Overall a good beer. Some dirty undertones and limited bitterness are minor faults but still easy to drink.

On draft in a 12 ounce pint glass.
Appearance: Clear amber with a quickly dissipating head.
Smell: Light grass and citrus aromas. Very faint smell of wood. Not much in the nose
Taste: Subtle bready taste and a little bit of bitterness to follow. I can almost pick up a slight alcohol warmth. Lingering, easy bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Clean and easy to drink.
Overall: If Crows Peak dry-hopped this, it would make a great pale ale. Otherwise it is a pretty unremarkable IPA.

Poured from a 12 oz. can into a tulip pint glass.

A: Clear, light amber color with one finger of off-white foam head. Localized thick lacing remains near the top of the glass.

S: Powerful toasted bread is impressive. Other smells have trouble edging in, but include floral and herbaceous hops.

T: Begins off-dry, with assertive pale malt that gives way to an acidic burst of mellow piney and lesser bright citrus hop aromatics. Flavors become drier into the middle as acidity subsides, with a distinctly funky Marris Otter thread standing out. The finish is mildly bitter and a little earthy, with the English malt carrying through to the end.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, slightly resinous and acidic on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: The malt qualities present in this South Dakota-brewed IPA are noteworthy, and should be celebrated for what they are. This beer is not a hop bomb; apart from the standout malt, flavors tend toward nuance. Still, this IPA is better than most (in a can.)
