a clean brownish red with tons of fluffy head (overcarbonated) and a ton of lacing. smells of faint malts, sulfur, slight hint of caramel. taste is of a subtle malt base with slight bitterness. faint sweet nutty/fruity flavor.
medium body, very carbonated (might have been sitting at the store for some time).
i'm giving this a 3 in hopes that a fresh bottle may do this beer justice. it looked great, but went straight downhill.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a pint glass.
Pours a deep reddish-amber with a decent off-white head that is pretty durable and leaves great lacing.
Smells notably hoppy on top of a mild malt base, but with a very faint musky note.
The taste starts malty and good, but the musky off-flavor appears mid-taste and lingers into the mildly bitter aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: very smooth a bit buttery; near medium body is slightly watery; medium carbonation.
O: Promising but flawed.

Poured from a bomber courtesy of pstutzman...
Ever-so slightly cloudy reddish color with a boatload of creamy colored head (it may have sat too long in the bottle) which dissipated ever-so-slowly. Healthy lacing. Smelled of biscuity malts with a hoppy hint. Taste of malt, hops, dusky-smoky in the middle with a hint of alcohol burn on the throat. Mouthfeel was good, nice balance of density and carbonation. Overall a enjoyable beverage - more enjoyable as the bottle emptied.

A: no head to speak of on a murky brownish amber body.
S: musty caramel malts, nuts, herbal hops, lots of sour cherry.
T: sour malts, a little smokey, some caramel but very difficult to draw out from the sourness. Nut notes.
M: medium body and moderate to high carbonation.
Overall: this one is way too tart and neglects the well rounded malt content you look for in the style.

A - Pours with one finger of off-white foam on top of a hazy, amber-brown body. The head settles rapidly and leaves light lace.
S - Light, musty hops, a hint of caramel and a vegetal note lingering in the background.
T - Some bready malt up front with a hint of toffee. The malt flavor turns sour in the middle and has a bit of a tart cherry note with moderate bitterness in the finish.
M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a dry finish.
D - Not good, the malt character is shallow and unimpressive while there is also a sour note in the flavor profile that isn't helping things much. Drain pour.

A: This poured a clear dark gold with some white head.
S: It smelled like tart apples and wild yeast, with some apricot and burnt barley and coriander.
T: It tasted like bready yeast and spicy rye and burnt barley, with a bit of tart apples and coriander. It had a fairly clean bittersweet aftertaste.
M: It was slightly thick with moderate carbonation. Decent body.
D: This had a kind of strange scent and taste, but not bad. The body was ok, and it was bland enough to be pretty easy to drink. Didn't fit the style very well, and not really enjoyable. Meh.

22 ounce bottle - $3.99 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Appearance: Pours out a clear, dark tan-hued body with a two fingers worth of just barely off-white foam.
Smell: Toasty, caramel-scented maltiness with a scant hint of fruit, a slight, slight touch of earthy hops, and a few drops of clean booze.
Taste: Toasty malts wrapped in a crust of sugar with some caramel flavor going on, but also some alcohol coming into play early on. Sliver of apple skin. Fairly low hop character, but enough bitterness (along with the alcohol) to balance things out. Dry, reasonably malty finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation. Slight creaminess to the mouthfeel.
Overall: So-so. For me, I'd have preferred it with a little less alcohol.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.
Look – light brown/medium amber in color, clear, with about half a finger’s worth of khaki-colored foam that dissipates quickly.
Smell – slightly hoppy, but with an odd “other” kind of taste within it. Maybe it’s syrupy or musky…hard to tell exactly.
Taste – in the taste, there’s a bit of a malty taste at the beginning, which melds quickly into a more bitter taste and feeling from the hops. The finish is the same “other” type of taste that I felt in the aroma, but is nonetheless still as illusive.
Mouthfeel – pretty well-balanced, but leans a bit more on the watery side.
Overall – very interesting brew to taste, sample, and think about.

Clear red amber with big foamy tan head with good retention and no lacing. Lightly floral lager aroma with light tea. Big malty tea and caramel sweetness with light hops and a good finish. Thin silky mouthfeel with light fuzzy finish.
Clear strong flavor throughout though a slightly off lingering acidic feel about halfway through. Smooth and easy drinking.

22 oz bottle from By The Bottle, Vancouver WA, shared with beer buddy poured into pint glass 3.17.2010.
Clear light red body, some trails of carbonation visible, with one finger white head medium dissipation with some lacing present. Taste is malt forward, caramel, with some smokiness and floral hops. Taste is caramel up front, a bit of smoke in the middle, pretty sweet (cherry, raisins) with some floral hops at finish but not real bitter on backend. Medium mouthfeel with decent effervescence. Pretty drinkable. Worth seeking out for fans of the style.

After sending a few of these out in recent trades, I realized that I hadn't reviewed this myself. Poured into 10oz glass. Poured a very slightly cloudy red with about a half-inch of off-white head head that had good retention and lacing.
The aroma was nicely sweet malt with a pleasant hop tang on the finish. The flavors were very similar, although there was a slight funky flavor that didn't show up on the nose. The hops were stronger on the finish than indicated in the scent.
The body was pretty typical, and drinkability was nice and easy.
Overall, a nice, pleasant brew. Nothing special, but very enjoyable, try it if you see it.

Bomber (obtained through excellent trade with beertunes) poured into a pint glass. Hazy, rusty red with a two finger cream colored head, solid lacing.
Smell is an unusual combination of sour and sweet. The sour to me seems like a malt vinegar, the sweetness is most definitely caramel. A touch of hops and a little breadiness there as well.
I really like the taste of this beer. Slightly acidic at first, followed by the hop hit, then a big dose of melted caramel, and finally a slightly dry, bitter finish.
Mouthfeel is good. Medium bodied with seemingly the right amount of carbonation. A little sticky with just a slight aftertaste.
Drinkability overall is good. Seems to get a little sweeter and heavier as it warms, but I will definitely see if I can get another one of these in trade.

Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass.
Appearance: deep amber hue with a touch of haze and a finger of ivory foam. The color has a richness which I really like.
Smell: nicely balanced aroma of biscuity and toasty malt. There's also a hint of tartness and a hint of caramel in the background.
Taste: nice combination of light caramel malt and some biscuitiness. The biscuit flavor is not overwhelming, which it can sometimes be in beers of this style. Hop bitterness is there, but hop character is extremely low; flavors tend toward the earthy. Overall, a nice red ale.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a satisfactory level of carbonation. Feel is slightly silky as it goes down; nice.
Drinkability: pretty solid. It is refreshing and well-balanced. I'd have this again, although I doubt I'd make a session of it.
