I come to Dock Street regularly because of their very good food and good beer. In fact when I left my last job, we had a going away party here because we all like it there so much. Everything I have tried here has been great, from the wood-oven pizzas to the sandwiches and appetizers. To emphasize the point that they have wood ovens, they leave a big stack of wood outside of the hallway to the restroom.
The beer here is sometimes just good or at times fantastic. I have had almost everything they regularly brew and my favorites are the Rye IPA, Hop Garden DIPA, and single variety hop PA's. I tend not to like their novelty beers as much: Chamomeleon, Sudan Grass, and the Kolsch.
Some have complained about the service, but I haven't experienced these kinds of problems. I think that maybe some just aren't used to what busy restaurants are like in the city, as long as you aren't afraid to be assertive to your server, you'll have no problem
All in all, it's not too pricey, the beers are good and it's a nice neighborhood place to hang out with friends or take out your family.

My wife and I and a couple of friend's came here on a Saturday. There was a block party across the street in the park when we came.I believe this was an old firehouse well it sure looked it anyway. Some seating available outside but a nice sized area inside with the bar stretching from one end to the other of the building.The hand drawn poster's on the wall are very unique.This place shocked me it seemed a little dirty, a little unorganized and I didn't think the beers would be that good but boy I was wrong.
I had a sampler of all their beer's and they were all exceptional.I ended up having the amarillo Pale Ale. I was torn between the Amarillo and the Rye IPA.
Sevice was a little off that day I guess but really not from our waitress as we walked in we were greeted and you could sit anywhere. When we sat down a whole bus load of people came in yes a literally a bus load. I believe it was the alien homebrew club.So they kind of took over the place.So service was a little more catered to them.
Update from 11/27. I had to add that I finally had there brick oven pizza and I must say Exceptional. I haven't had anything close to this in any brewpub.Amazing.
I really didn't have any food I thought it would be dirty early on and again I was wrong the food they were bringing out smelled terrific now I am getting aggravated maybe I should have given it a shot.

Visited Dock Street Brewery on a Friday after work in late June with my wife and two of our friends.
We arrived around 6:30 and were seated immediately. The place was half full; however, it was a sunny day (rare this season) so there were a few parties seated outside. The interior was spacious and comfortable, if a little industrial. No frills in this place. The patrons varied in age. Only two large vessels were visible behind glass which I assumed were fermenters; I was disappointed that more of the guts of the brewery were not visible.
We arrived and sat in the corner. I ordered the sampler of 6 beers - a Bohemian pilsener, American wheat, rye IPA, sorghum beer, amber ale, and an espresso stout. I settled on the rye IPA and determined to try the espresso stout later on for dessert. The rye IPA came and was delightful, although different from any other IPA I have ever had (due to the rye I'm sure). It went very well with the hummus that we ordered. The hummus was fantastic.
I milked the rye IPA until our dinners came out. I had a calzone while everyone else ordered pizzas. I do not remember the gorey details of the food probably because I scarfed it down so fast, but I do remember that the general consensus was that it all was absolutely delicious. Dock Street has the food side of things down pat.
After dinner, my wife and our friends decided to have some dessert. I ordered the espresso stout which I had tasted earlier. It tasted like a carbonated cup of creamy coffee. I have not had many coffee stouts, but I found this to be quite enjoyable. Non-coffee fans need not apply, however.
Overall, the experience was a good one. Price point was not too bad considering the quality of the food. However, I did notice that a growler-fill was $16 (more for a high ABV but I don't remember how much more), which seemed a little steep. Otherwise, everything was pretty good.

Atmosphere was nice, seemed modern. Seems like a place where everyone who was in there was a regular, and spot the out of towner was not a difficult game. The server was nice, friendly and informational. The pizzas looked great, but I had a rather nice salad. Good food.
Tried the sampler, and all were fairly good, but the Prince Myshkin's Russian Imperial Stout was extraordinary. However they would not sell it in bottles, nor would he sell me a growler of it, and I was ready to pay top dollar!!!
It really is a shame that I couldn't take home one of the top beers I have tried in the past year. That totally sucks!
PS, if you have some in a bottle, please send ASAP.

Got the chance to go to this place last night on my first visit to Philadelphia. The atmosphere was nice. A very modern looking restaurant with a fairly generous amount of seating. Good music (Van Morrison, Creedence, etc.), nice lighting all added to the mood.
The quality of the brews were surprising. I've gone to a lot of brew pubs and been disappointed but each offering I tasted was solid. The amber ale and rye IPA were both solid and the hop garden double IPA was delicious.
Service was good. Our waiter was on top of our drink orders at the right time and wasn't ever too pushy or moody when we weren't ordering one on top of the other.
The drink selection, limited as it was, was excellent. At 6 choices, there was something for everyone: a few IPAs, Amber Ale, Porter, Pils and Stout were all present. Good stuff.
We got a few pizzas (margherita and veggie sans onions) which were tasty and had some solid crust.
Prices were reasonable and nothing to complain about, especially coming from New York City. A cool little spot to hang out. I'd definitely come back here.

I live down the street from this joint and I must say that the food is great. The pizza here is the best in the city and the trio fries are amazing. Dock Street is family friendly. We bring our daughter here to feed her our pizza crusts.
The beer is hit and miss with me. I will say that I encouraged some non-beer drinkers to try the Bubbly Wit and they ordered seconds. Since they opened, any beer with wheat in their grain bill has the heavy clove-like esters. It just seems like the use the same yeasts in many of their beers. Otherwise, there have been some impressiive beers. The Rye IPA, Sexual Chocolate, and Anniversary Amber have all been great. The beers have definitely been improving and the pizza is awesome, so best of luck Dock Street.

We made our long overdue first stop to the new brewpub. The long-shuttered original in one of the Logan Square buildings downtown was one of my early craft beer destinations long ago.
I love the location in a converted firehouse in a changing West Philly neighborhood. The inside had a rundown diner feel and could maybe be a little cleaner but it was a bit of a letdown after the very cool exterior.
Six beers on tap, including the Rye IPA, which I have enjoyed many other places. It was just as good here. I also enjoyed the Hop Garden double IPA.
We had the cheese plate (not bad but nothing special) and the trio fries that were a staple of the old place. As in the past, the ratio of (approx.) 60% regular fries, 25% sweet potato fries and 15% fried leeks is perfect for my taste, and something most places don't get right.
Service was pleasant if not particularly knowledgeable.
Not sure I would stop here regularly, maybe just a quick stop on our way to Local 44.

Dock Street opened up about 10 blocks east of my house, so it's by far the closest place to get a good beer and (most likely) not get shot. On the west edge of UPenn's influence, its an anchor for the families to the east and for hopeful westward revitilization of the area.
Anyway, the old firehouse is a great building. This has a very different atmosphere from most brewpubs - it is loud, almost cafeteria like, and they keep jamming more and more tables in. Nice outdoor seating in the summer though, and on Fridays theres free jazz concerts in the park in front of the building so thats a great time. The atmosphere isnt appropriate for all people or occasions, but its a nice change.
Lots of families come in too, especially in the earlier part of the evening.
The RyePA is usually on tap and thats a solid beer; other than that in my experience the beers have been hit or miss. Many stouts feel like they need to age a bit more; some of the more experimental brews this summer were underwhelming, but generally, there are 2 or 3 solid-to-good beers available with usually 5 or 6 total on draft. They also usually have their two bottled beers available, but I have yet to get anything bottled.
The food is the real story here, the wood fired oven creates some awesome pizzas. Menu is limited to pizza, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and appetizers, but theres a large variety of pizza and it is excellent.
Service at the bar is generally more responsive than the seated tables, but overall service is acceptable.
I find that its just an enjoyable place to hang out with friends and have a good time. In my experience it hasn't been dominated by college kids, as the generally live much farther east, and its more locals of all age groups and income levels.

Cool setting in an old firehouse. A hard core industrial / bohemian atmosphere. Works well with what they have to work with.
While they don't throw a lot of beer choices out there for you, usually 6 choices, I give them a bump up from average due to the interesting and rather eclectic choices. An innovative brewer making interesting and flavourful things for sure. From an alcoholic "root beer" (The Sass), to a lemon/lime Kolsch and a spiced Sorgham brew....nice work.
Food is rather limited but what they have is well done...some of the best wood-fired pizza I have ever had. With a choice selection that will leave you dizzy!
Service has always been good, no complaints.
A quality place that is bordering on a must stop while in Philly. If they could bump up the tap offerings by a few it would certainly become so in my book. Glad to see Dock Street from the ashes....at a firehouse no less!

Dock Street may very well be my favorite of the brewpubs in the City of Brotherly Love. I will find any excuse to go to Philly just to swing by and have a few beers and a pizza here.
The brewpub unfortunately isn't established in one of the nicer areas of the city. In other words, I'm not sure I would want to be there alone after midnight. But a lunch-time or early evening dinner visit is fine. There is always plenty of parking right on the street every time we've been there.
The atmosphere is kind of 50's retro mixed with a modern flair... Bohemian, if you will. There's an odd-shaped bar that runs jaggedly through the place with plenty of seating for the beer geeks. There are also a good amount of tables to sit and enjoy some food. Overall, I really like the atmosphere of this place and its eclecticism. The service is always very good, and the bartenders are among the friendliest I've encountered. My only complaint with the atmosphere is that is a pretty big hollow, metallic room that tends to get quite loud, especially when it's crowded.
As for the beer, I've found that everyting I've tried during my visits have all been above average. They are brewing some very unusual beers lately, including a root beer-inspired Brown Ale and a Kolsch with lemon and lime zest. Their Rye IPA is a must-try! The don't have much on tap (only 5-6 house brews), but they always have a very diverse line-up including a lager/pils, a hoppy ale, a dark beer and a few unique concoctions. There is always something for every taste.
As for the food, I would rank their wood oven pizza as among the best I've ever had. They have a wide variety of pizza selections, and everyone I've had has been fantastic. They also have good salads and sandwiches.
Overall, I really like this place a lot and always look forward to return visits. I definitely would recommend a visit to Dock Street... the sooner the better!
