This batch of Prince Myshkin was aged in Hungarian oak barrels which once held Pinot Noir wine.We previously used these for aging Dock Street 2009 Barrel-Aged BarleyWine. As a result some of the Pinot Noir character was stripped from the barrels before adding this stout. During the 11 month aging process, the barrels imparted wonderfully delicate notes of vanilla, coconut, and mocha to the flavor and aroma. It starts rich and bitter-sweet and ends with lingering spiciness. At 9.5% ABV, this ale is ready to be savored on a bitter cold Philly winter night, or laid down for years to come. We're proud to present to you Dock Street's 2010 Holiday Release: Oak Barrel Aged Prince Myshkin Russian Imperial Stout!

On-tap, served in a snifter
The body sits midnight black in the glass with a creamy mocha colored cap. The cap fell slowly, never truly falling lower than about a finger. Good lines of lace revealing the sip marks.
Milk chocolate leaps from the glass and happily meets the olfactories. Some mild roast with dark fruits and a bit of oak. Not an overly broad or bold aroma, but pleasing nonetheless.
Sweet chocolate dominates the flavor profile. Milk chocolate and cocoa powder mainly. A touch of coffee roast helps to balance out the sweetness of the chocolate. A little bit of dark fruit pokes through mid palate. The finish is of sweet chocolate, mild roast, and a touch of woody oak.
Smooth, rich, creamy mouthfeel. This is easily the best part of this beer. Overly smooth and creamy feel with perfectly low carbonation.
This is a solid RIS. Lacking on the robust roast flavors, but bringing the chocolate in spades. A delicious beer and a very solid RIS.

Review from notes. On tap at the brewpub.
Appearance: Quite black and opaque, with a small tanned head that fell to a thin band quickly. Modest lacing.
Aroma: Roast, toffee, molasses, cocoa powder, char. Nice nose.
Taste: Sweet and roasty with lots of bittersweet chocolate and a touch of coffee and char. Chocolate malt, molasses, subtle oak and dark fruit notes. Booze is well masked in the taste. A bit of a bitter bite in the finish. Spices, anise, and a touch of yeast give it a bit of quasi-Belgian feel. Not sure how much I liked that.
Mouthfeel: Somewhat sticky and chewy, smooth, with good creaminess. Full bodied but could have used even more thickness and chew for my taste.
Overall: Quite good but maybe not much more than that. Has intricacies but not exceptional depth

On tap at Standard Tap in a tulip glass.
A- this was waiting for me looking black with just some tannish foam scattered around the surface. Once this left some swirls would bring it back for a bit. Some lace spots.
S- Like a bold roasty stout with a nice malt base and a good amount of chocolate. All types of chocolate, some roasted character. Im not sure if the tap version of this beer has oak chips added during brewing, but I can't smell it.
T- Chocolate and cocco with some crystal malts reving things up. Getting some tootsie roll and some old world character. The slightest bit of alcohol in the finish, not a big deal.
M- A big bodied beer with a nice smooth texture. Nothing too big in terms of CO2 but it's there. This is a well rounded brew with a great mask of the alcohol.
D- I really was not expecting all the chocolate but I was very pleased with this high abv imperial stout, and much more drinkable than other similar ones i've had over the years.
Im constantly impressed by Dock Street beers on tap. Hopefully I can find a bottle of one of their prince stouts with wine barrel treatment. I hear that's the tits. This was a treat and a sweet one at that.
