Poured into a snifter at cvm4's big Yeti tasting

A: black with brown highlights. A tan, half finger head that quickly dissipates. No lacing; leaves big bubbles in its wake.

S: Light chocolate, licorice.

T: malty, sweet, smooth. A lighter body. Caramel and licorice. Very nice. Didn't pick up the Belgian accents.

M: medium, creamy. Not much carbonation.

O: Another winner from the Yeti clan. I liked the Oak Aged a bit better. But still a solid IRS.

Bottle from Total Wine in Tampa. From notes.

A - Poured black with one finger of tan head. Alcohol legs very present, film retention, no lace.

S - Coffee, chocolate, yeasty, funk, booze, licorice.

T - Yeast and funk up front with lot's of chocolate. Really earthy with some dark fruit too. Nice.

M - Medium tingly carbonation, medium to full body, Belgo yeast finish with lot's of dryness.

O/D - A nice brew. Complex and adds a nice twist that works well. A little bit of alcohol was noticeable, but not enough to include as a flaw. Good stuff.

June 20th, 2011 bottling date. Just about 2 years old.

A: Pours black with a nice big thick and dense medium brown head. Head fades at a moderate pace, with great retention. Medium-sized small splotches of lacing left behind.

S: Funny, markedly different from "normal" yeti. Very fruity, lots of dark fruits like raisins and figs. Plums too? A little smoke and a little earth too. Tiny bit of umami floating in the background. Very little roasted malt stands out, a little char perhaps.

T: Yup, very fruity up front again. Cherries in there too now. Almost even stronger than the aroma. Tiny bit of char, smoke and chocolate to go with it. A little bitter chocolate briefly. Sweetness disappears in the finish; lingering bitter, acrid smoke in the aftertaste with some earthy belgian yeast.

M: Somewhat heavy, super super super smooth. Goes down like silk.

O: Hmph, interesting. Pretty typical of the belgian treatment of stouts. Body is a little lighter, but smoother. Roasted malt takes a backseat to fruitiness and earthiness. I prefer a more robust roasted malt character but this is still quite nice. Good flavors, good balance and super smooth drinkability. An interesting and tasting variation of the venerable yeti line.

From: Beertopia, Omaha, NE
Bottled 2011-07-27
Glass: Tulip

Great Divide's Belgian Yeti is a quite solid imperial stout with the interesting twist of phenolic flavors produced via the Belgian yeast. While not the most amazing stout I've tried, this is a very good and satisfying take on the style.

Beer pours a 1cm-tall head of dark tan foam, with below average retention of about 1 minute. The head fades to a thin ring around the perimeter of the glass. Lcing is present, a sparse arrangement of medium-sized blotches that cling to the insides of the glass. The body is dark brown to black, opaque, with light bringing out very dark amber colors around the edges. Carbonation not visible.

Aroma heavy on semi-dark chocolate (50% or so), surprising levels of caramel-like sweetness, a slight black dried fig ester, some spicy Belgian yeast phenolics, and slight roasted coffee beans.

Overall, taste of mild, acrid, roast malt with caramel malt sweetness, black dried fig, raisin, prune, burnt toast, slightly spicy Belgian phenolics. Front of palate finds roasted malt acridity mixed with dark and caramelized malt sweetness, Belgian nutmeg-like phenolics, and cocoa powder. Mid-palate finds plenty of roasted malt, dark chocolate, spicy and slightly nutmeg-like Belgian yeast phenolics, slight vanilla, and dried black fig and prune esters. Back of palate picks up roasted malt with a slight caramelized sugar undertone, nutmeg-like Belgian yeast phenolics, and very mild ethanol as the beer warms. Aftertaste is of acrid, darkly roasted malt with substantial dark chocolate, which is balanced by sweetness from caramel malt, a bit of black dried fig, and Belgian yeast phenoics.

Beer is heavy-bodied, with medium-low levels of carbonation, resulting in a light fizziness that very quickly transitions to a foamy, soft, and smooth mouthfeel. Ethanol warmth can be mildly felt from mid-palate on, but is mild and generally pleasant and appropriate. Closes quite dry, with massive amounts of stickiness coating the mouth and lips.

A- Thick black pour, thick frothy tan head that leaves sticky lacing.

S- Roasted malts dominate the nose, but the Belgian yeast comes through to provide a spiced bread aroma with a hint of dried fruit.

T- The classic yeti flavors are there, big roasty malts are up front. The Belgian yeast adds some spicy, fruity flavors that come in about halfway through the taste and not the finish.

M- Thick and rich, full bodied, medium carbonation.

O- My least favorite of the variants, but still a good beer. The Belgian yeast addition is interesting, but I do not think it improves the beer.
