Straight pour from a 32oz twist-off growler to my trusty Cigar City snifter; filled on the same day at the Syracuse Real Food Co-op.

Appearance (4.0): Half a finger of hot cocoa-colored head comes off the pour, but it doesn’t last, despite having a fine-grained texture and leaving immediate (small amounts of) lacing. The body is black and undeniably dark, but interestingly not opaque—dark, dark red-amber tones come through at the edges if you hold it up next to a light. There’s some modest lacing composed of thin layers of scattered suds and fat legs here and there.

Smell (4.25): Strong, rich aromas of dark-roast coffee and a smooth, lightly vanilla-ish scent mixed with mellow wood tones (not as spicy as the scent of fresh-cut wood, but similar) make an interesting dynamic here. There’s some very nice, thick, understated molasses and dark cocoa powder undertones that add some depth here, mixed with a little booze but not bad. I really like the way the oak comes across clearly but not too strongly, in a supporting role.

Taste (4.25): Some biting, almost acidic coffee bitterness comes through first on the palate, but moderate in strength, balanced out by the rich layers of dark chocolate, toffee, boozy fruitcake, and the again clear-but-subordinate woody, mellow oak character—until the finish. The finish is dominated by that cutting coffee bitterness again, not acidic but strong enough and somewhat astringent—like cold-brewed black coffee. There’s also a tang on the back end like dry cocoa powder. Thankfully, whatever booze character is in here is covered up by or blended into this coffee and cocoa finish nicely. As it warms, it shows some lighter and brighter but still creamy sweetness in the mid-palate, like caramel ice cream—but subtly.

Mouthfeel (4.0): The body is full and modestly viscous, having a consistency that’s somewhat heavy and sticks together but doesn’t make it to the “syrupy” level. The carbonation is understated and smooth, while offering a nice, evenly-distributed tingle towards the end. It finishes relatively smooth, all in all.

Overall (4.0): This is a really nice, really smooth Imperial Stout that shows strong character in a smooth blend of different elements: the coffee, chocolate, molasses, and fruitcake-y tones of the malt body, mixed with the thankfully understated oak aging, and the faded remnants of some serious hopping. This makes a great sipper with plenty of character that won’t bludgeon you to death, but stands up to the style easily.

Thick rich brown head atop a thick rich beer. Dark and near black. Maybe it is black. When something is this good looking who cares. Smell is a cup of the best roasted coffee you have ever had. Perfectly balanced notes of roasted grains and sweet molasses and caramel. Coffee and chocolate hit the nose at the same time with each synergistically highlighting the other. Taste is out of the park. the best latte you ever had does not come close to this. Huge coffee front yields to a sweet molasses and caramel body. Notes of vanilla and light oak and wood in the back. Finish is dry and clean with a touch of coffee bitterness. Hops are well integrated and of the earth variety. Feel is lush and satisfying. Just enough lightness to make it supremely drinkable and at the same time demanding of respect. A superb beer of the highest order. Wow.

Pours from the growler a dark walnut and turns black in the glass with a quarter inch, creamy espresso head. Yeti leaves legs and rings of lace on a Dogfish Head snifter.

Rich roasted malts greet one with some oak and baker’s chocolate. Latte and fresh wheat bread are also detectable.

Strong malt bitterness quickly followed by light sweetness. Flavors include chocolate and dried cherries. A long, subtle finish brings back a touch of bitterness with vanilla and nuts. This one improves greatly with warmth.

Yeti has a medium to full body with a velvety texture that coats the palate. Alcohol is about as expected and carbonation is light. A stocky, creamy residue remains after each sip.

This one is best sipped, but works well with a steak. One would expect that it would also make a fine vanilla float.

The draft version of this beer was quite different, and clearly superior, with crisper flavors and aroma.

Poured into a tulip

A: Pours a pitch black color. Creamy bubbly mocha head. Fades away into a sticky film on the edges.

S: Not your traditional oak chips. Strong vanilla notes blend beautifully with multiple chocolate variations (milky, dark, coco powder).

T: Tremendously smooth up front, taste like a Hershey bar. Transitions to a rich, earthy dark chocolate taste. Hints of dark fruits, chocolate covered strawberries, from a light hop presence. Leaves with a faint alcohol presence, potent as black liquorice. Oak comes strong at the end and lingers for quite some time.

M: Silky smooth body, slides down the palate with ease. Mild alochol presence but it covered up remarkably well with the rich chocolate notes.

O: The oak is not over bearing yet definitely shinning throughout each sip. Great but does not possess a 'wow' characteristic like its distant cousins (chocolate, Belgian or espresso).

Dark, dark dark! Thick head that is also dark brown and sticks around for a while. Smells a little sweet for a stout, but nice.

The mouthfeel is a little harsh, with only the hops staying on the tongue for very long. I hesitate to use the word "stouty" with respect to a stout but that's what it is, a dark rough mix of hop, char and wood. It's like drinking an alcoholic stump. If you're not a stout fan, this won't win you over but it's good at what it is.

Got this in a Growler from Vulcan Beverage .. drank from pint glass.. the pour was dark as night..leaving a nice two finger head, mocha in color with small bubbling that topped the head.. the smell was amazing..smell of coco..coffee present..a mouthful begins with a rich malty..coffee that leaves a oak bite..with a small hint of alcohol that warms as its swallowed ..over all its a great explosion of flavors that blend well on the pallet ...that taste is best enjoyed with a slow sip...
Enjoy..

Oak-Aged Yeti, full damn nice growler, filled at The Pony Bar in Hell's Kitchen, New York.

Appearance: Served in a Sierra snifter, it pours very thick and dark and oily, producing a perfect one-finger very tan-brown head with bubbles on top. Head dies quickly though, and only a rim and some bubbles remain. Lacing is beautiful, color is overwhelmingly dark.

Smell: Coffee, roasty bitterness, wood. Lots of oak! Very dry, makes me think of sticking my nose into a barrel at a winery/brewery.

Taste: Oak right away, very woodsy. Then chocolate, some faint vanilla. Reminds me of the very bitter vegan artisanal chocolate I just bought in Brooklyn. Alcohol is hidden, though. Not boozy at all. Finishes dry and woodsy.

Mouthfeel: Again the woodsy feeling all over, and a dry finish. Some hop bitterness around the mouth. Chocolaty, creamy. Low carbonation, medium body, full flavor.

Drinkability: Good, in small doses, just not the whole growler! :-) It is not boozy, which I really like. Drinks well. Could never guess the 9.5%!

Pours pitch black, ¾ inch of mocha foam, quickly settles into a light collar with random bubbles on the surface. Nice aromas of hops, coconut and oak. On the palate, I get lots of bourbon, roasted malt, vanilla, and a touch of late hoppiness. Finishes with a coffee like bitterness and some nicely warming alcohol. An excellent beer.

It's the day after my birthday so I decided to pickup a 1/2 growler of this at Party Town in Florence, KY as well as 1/2 of the Two Hearted Ale. Based on them both being in the top 100, I think I'm going to have a hell of a night.

A: This thing pours black as night into the glass and leaves a nice tan foam head that lingers almost the entire time I drink it. The lacing left on the glass as it goes down is just perfect. I could look at this beer all day.

S: Chocolate! My lord is chocolate present in the nose of this beer. The sweet malt comes through as well with some coffee presence and a faint fruit smell that I can't quite place. Maybe of the melon variety? Wow. Definately a little different but done well.

T: Doesn't disappoint after having a love affair with the smell of the beer. The roasted coffee and malt come through in a big way with chocolate coming through over everything. There is a faint vanilla taste in there which I'd attribute to the oak. The melon smell isn't really in the taste but i swear that's what I pick up in the nose.

M: Creamy, low carbonation, a bit chewy, nice thick stout

D: I am glad I can at least have another glass of this from the 1/2 growler I got. Gonna have to share some with my neighbor as I'm afraid I'll never get to the Bell's review later if I try to go for 3 glasses of this at 9.5%.

Poured from a "growler" AKA milk jug from Vulcan Beverages. Reviewed from notes.

A: Thick syrupy darkness. Kind of reminded me of chocolate milk coming out of the carton. Forms a 1/2 inch dark brown head.

S: Smells just like the regular yeti - roasted malts, chocolate, and maybe some sweet fruits. Faint oak scent.

T: Here's where the oak really comes in. Rich chocolate and malts followed by a nice oak bite to dry out the finish.

M: Creamy and warming. The oak adds a crispness to the finish but the flavor still covers the mouth.

D: Very rich. A nice growler to share with friends before it loses freshness. A nice nightcap or desert beer.

Served from 32 oz. growler from Whole Foods Bowery Beer Room into snifter.

Pours pitch black as expected -- no light gets through. Beautiful head that hung around much longer than expected. Eventually settled into a nice khaki ring, but very nice retention for the style.

Definitely pick up a good amount of dark coffee in the nose -- also got a whiff of malt and vanilla.

Excellent bite of coffee and some chocolate. Alcohol is hidden, but this bad boy still has some bite to it. Not exactly your perfectly refined beer, but its aggressive and I could sip this thing all night. The barrel aging definitely has an effect and it works out very nicely.

Nice viscous mouthfeel and very smooth. Not exactly high on drinkability as it is more of a sipper, but still... excellent take on a big American Imperial Stout and I would recommend.

In a 22 oz. Weizen glass. That's right.

Good Thor Almighty in Yon Sky Weilding Mighty Mjölner this brew is to be reckoned with! Each sip conjurs more dreams dancing in my waking sight! A tundra yeti I be! Knuckle dragging and yowling along the spine of the world!

A -- Stay back! Black as Coal! Not a wave of the silly speed drunken light waves dare enter! What wonderfull head! The color of supple brown areola! Thick sticky lace mires the sides of the glass.

S -- interesting...not unlike the taste of the brew itself except an additonal floral hop characteristic can be percieved.

T -- Syrupy malt goodness, sweet chocolate, fresh peat, hop briskness, and after an exhale through the nose you finally notice that this is an alcoholic drink! I did sort of notice the oak/vanilla character throughout the entire profile. I'm at a loss to percieve the complex landscape this brew has shown me. I need more time on the trail!

M -- This brew takes your silly punk ass by the hand and leads you, the blushing maiden, with it's unfettered might into a castle thick with 4 glucose chains of dextrins all shoved together in monumental piles of mouth feel. You cannot be rid of their effect until you are done.

D -- Put down your hashpipe! High Grav Russian Imperial Stout of the 9.5% ABV persuasion fails the drinkability test miserably unless it leaves you stumbling to the corner to collapse in sporadic convulvions after two 22 oz pours from your growler. Suggest revival with a High IBU IPA. Snoqualmie's Wildcat IPA will do nicely.

Had this beer awhile back at Track 84 in Warwick, RI and I fell in love. I haven't been able to find it since then. Anyone know where I can pick some up? That being said it was an excellent stout with a full thick body. The taste was smooth with lingering finish overall delicious but wouldn't recommend drinking more than one at a time.

This is our last beer from Great Divide… but I don't remember drinking any of the other ones! I do like their beers, but just haven't had one in a while. I am stoked about this one, though. It's hot outside, but I am on a Russian imperial stout kick right now. That, and light Euro pale lagers. This is a beer style that will get better as it heats up, so maybe I should take this out of the fridge and let it sit for a while.

Speaking of beer, we had dinner tonight at the Praying Monk in Old Town Scottsdale. They actually have a new general manager (he started tonight) and we chatted about the beer blog. He was nice, and we had fun. I ordered a Belgian beer and a Cuban sandwich… I was feeling international tonight! I do think their prices are a little high for Old Town, but they have a pretty good selection. They also have a single tap that is always rotating, so you never know what is going to be on tap.

This one wasn't on tap tonight, but I am ready to start reviewing beers again. It's been too long! So… here we go. Cheers!

In the Glass: Oh man, I could smell this as I was pouring it. I love a big, thick, chewy stout. I bet this one is even good cold! Anyway, it poured quite thick, and left a nice thick dark brown head. It looks like something I could float a quarter on. Words like, "massive" and, "complex" litter the label. Can't wait!!! Oh, and this is dark as night. Let's see what this one smells like.

Nose: This smells like a nice example of a Russian Imperial Stout. Should I capitalize Imperial Stout? Anyway, I will just call it an RIS from here on out. This does smell like a good example of the style, but is a bit "hot". According to BeerAdvocate, this beer can be cellared for a like time. I wonder, at only 9.5% ABV, how long I could cellar this and how good it will get in time. Now that this massive head is starting to leave, I am seeing a nice sticky lace. Can't wait to drink this! So… here we go!

Flavor: Cold, that is GREAT! It is, as I expected, a bit "hot"… but still drinkable. I wouldn't be able to drink more than one or two glasses of this… at 9.5% ABV I might not be able to. But still, that is a lovely flavor. It is nice, thick (not chewable), and has a nice creamy mouthfeel. I will talk about that in a second. The burp is pretty nice, too.

This does have a nice carbonation to it, too. Some of these can get a bit flat… but this one is nicely carbonated. I wish a brewery would start making candy that tastes like beer… imagine a jawbreaker that tastes like a glass of beer. I can see it now… is that a million dollar idea? I have seen beer scented candles and beer scented soap… but never candy. Now I want a sucker!

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is initially creamy offering thin layers of bubbles on the corners of the tongue… but nothing to write home about. The experience here isn't in the mouthfeel, but the finish and the flavor. I bet this beer has a ton of calories, but that's OK. It's worth it! I need to workout tomorrow, anyway. I ate too much tonight for dinner. I missed breakfast AND lunch, but hey… I have a girlish figure to watch!

Aftertaste: The finish is somewhat drying and offers a nice lingering finish. Is that chocolate I am getting? I bet this would make a delicious beer float. Speaking of beer floats, I just read something earlier today about cocoa syrup stout floats. Basically it was a beer float using Kaluha. Sounds good to me!

This is a GREAT example of an RIS. If someone said, "What does an RIS taste like?" Start here. If you are new to big beers like this, you might be turned off from the booze flavor… but just stick with it. It's worth it and will open a door to some delicious big beers. A lot of rare beers, like Dark Lord, are nasty Russian imperial stouts. Pour a glass, light a cigar, and enjoy. Cheers!

Darn near black body with the darkest most luscious head I've seen on a brew - sticky lacing coats the glass as the ice cream float like head slowly subsides - yeah I liked the look of it - molasses and chocolate with herbal hops in the nose - taste follows with a smooth oak backbone - nicely bitter but not overly so - full body, smooth, easy drinking for a big brew, booze only became apparent as it warmed - an excellent RIS

Had side by side with the Oak Aged Chocolate

A-Black in the glass, two finger brown head that tries to leave some lacing behind.

S-Oak, chocolate, lots of roasted malt, some of which was burnt (the good burnt)

T- Very oaky, lots of roasted malt, some burnt (still good), chocolate, vanilla, tad coffee and licorice.

M-Medium bodied, nicely carbonated and a tad creamy.

O-A solid beer. Cheaper than most BA beers, with better availability. Not as great, but still a yummy beer.

22 oz bottle poured into my snifter. Bottle is eight months old. This is one of those shelf turds I never buy because there's always something seasonal to be had. It's a dry spell in the Southern Tier right now, but I'm happy there's stuff like this lying around!

A - pours tar-oil black with the brown head characteristic of the style on the forced pour. Recedes quickly, no lacing. Standard, but good looking.

S - hmm, a little boozy right at first, but it recedes quickly. Not a lot here, honestly, which is the negative thing I can really say about the "lightness" one discovers in the flavor and MF.

T - enjoyable certainly. Big roasted, toasty malts, almost nutty. OAY is lighter in flavor than most RISs I've had, but it's not necessarily a bad thing. The alcohol content clocks in a bit lower than others too. No indication of the aging.

M - the consistency is close to perfect, very smooth. A great mixture of syrupy goodness and alcohol, not too chewy, not too thin. This is where a lot of RISs fall short, in my opinion, so it's nice to see something complex that doesn't sacrifice too much.

O - OAY is very drinkable and very tasty, if a little pricey per oz (I paid $10.30 with tax for this bottle). I would certainly drink this again if I could find a cheaper bottle.

Bottled on 9/24/12. Poured from a bomber into a chalice.

A beautiful beer that unfortunately looks better than it tastes. Definitely a complex beer, but the "regular" Yeti is much better. Unfortunately the hops and the vanilla are over shadowed by the booziness of the brew. Difficult to finish an entire bomber, which is typically not an issue for me. Maybe some bottle aging would provide some improvement.

A - Viscous, full bodied, black. Half-finger rocky brown head, which disipates rather quickly. Slight lacing.

S - Boozy, bourbon, chocolate, sweet, roasted malts.

T - Roasted malt, oaky, nice hoppines, some bourbon, lingering alcohol in the finish, subtle vanilla.

MF - Chewy, slick, alcohol hot.

A - Extreme black, creamy, big tan head, and some lacing. Black as night in the desert!

It comes in a dark black color with a small deep brown head.

It does not have the same barrel aged oakiness as other barrel aged beers like KBS or BCBS. There is big heavy malt, coffee, and bitter chocolate.

There is a good easy finish, with a bit of a cloying taste and bitterness. However, it really is a good Russian Imperial. The alcohol is not there and really drinkable for a beer with 9.5% ABV.

I easily prefer Espresso Aged Yeti more, which is one of my favorite. This is still quite good.

650 mL bottle poured into a Kuhnhenn snifter. Bottled 10/7/2011.

Appearance - Pours with a big mocha head. Settles to just a collar, but a nice one. Just a couple of flecks of lace.

Smell - Oak and lots of black patent malt. Slightly grassy nose to it. Very chocolatey.

Taste - Oak immediately present again, but dies down to a more standard Yeti flavor. Still very green, almost grassy. Chocolatey and bitter. A variety of bitternesses. Oak bitterness, hop bitterness, and malt bitterness.

Mouthfeel - Abrasive bitterness, but nice body. Medium carbonation.

Overall - All these Yeti beers have the same grassy bitterness that I don't welcome in a stout. I get that it's an RIS, but it's over the top. The oakiness doesn't smooth it out at all, just adds to it.

Completely, pure, ultimate blackness poured into a snifter. 2 inch creamy, mocha head lingers...
Rich coffee, bitter chocolate bouquet.
Creamy, ultra smooth mouthfeel, with some vanilla coming from the oak barrels...Rich roasted coffee, sweetness from the malts, hop bitterness too, with everything so well balanced, so well blended, it's an absolute wonder to the senses.
Incredibly complex, amazing beer!

Poured from a bottle with a bottled on date of Sept 2012 , pours a rich deep chocolate color with a thick brown head that retains its body well and lacing that sticks to the side of the glass , a very nice looking beer in the glass

The aroma is just great , I pick up the malt and the alcohol very well with hints of vanilla and almost a creamy smell to it , kind of sweet but enough bite from the alcohol to not be too much

The body of this beer is almost too week to be such a big beer , I was expecting a hearty thick taste and it was almost a little too weak for this beer , not that it was bad just not what I was thinking

The flavors this beer puts out are very nice malty sweetness , you can taste the bitter overtones of the dark malts used in this brew , the oak flavor comes in and really finishes this beer off nicely

Over all I'm not a huge stout fan , I mean I like them ok , but not a huge fan , I loved this one. I mean I thought I loved FBS until I drank this , now I know I liked FBS and Loved the Oak Aged Yeti

Dark appearance, one finger of brown head.
In the smell a strong toasted, vanilla, wood and coffe in the foreground. Full and impressive in the smell already.
Confirmed in the taste, with even cocoa, green hop, almost herbal, some root notes. Then a lot of hazelnut, cocoa nibs, and again vanilla in evidence.
Full and round body, smooth.
Pairing with dark chocolate and cocoa nibs, great.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle with a Sep. 11, 2012 bottling date into a Great Divide Brewing Company "Yeti" branded snifter

Pours pitch black and as viscous as motor oil capped by a thick dark brown head. Great retention, significant splotchy lacing. Robust aroma of bakers chocolate, toasted oak, fusel alcohol, and loads of roasted malt. Huge dark chocolate, dried black cherries, toasty oak, hint of molasses. The finish brings bitter espresso bean accents combined with bold hops and pleasant toasted oak with dark chocolate tones. Big, creamy, smooth full body. Gentle, perfect carbonation. Another exceptional variation of the original Yeti.
