Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass. Bottled on Oct 11 2012.

Appearance: Pours a very deep brownish ruby red with a lot of rising bubbles. Solid three fingers of off white head with good retention. Leaves a fair amount of lacing around the glass.

Smell: A very malty and roasted aroma. Toasted malts and roasted barley with big hints of baked biscuit, caramel, toffee, and yeast. A complex mix of subtle scents including chocolate, nuts, smoke, peat, oak, and oats. Hints of brown sugar sweetness. Also some hints of dark fig, dates, and raisin. Decent hop backing that is pretty earthy and grassy. A pretty nice malt driven smell.

Taste: Like the smell hints, a complex mix of malt flavors. Toasted malts with a taste of Baked biscuit, barley, burnt toast, caramel, toffee, nuts, and yeast. Notes of chocolate and oats along with some subtle notes of oak, smoke, and peat. A fair amount of brown sugar. Light undertones of dark fruits with some fig, raisin, prune, and dates. Decent presence of earthy hops with a fair taste of grass. A very nice malty taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Creamy and fairly drying. Alcohol is hidden pretty well.

Overall: A very good malt driven ale. Complex toasty flavors with a nice warming feel.

A: nice dark brown color with a 2 finger tan head that has decent retention

S: I'm detecting some faint musky wood that is overlayed with sweet Carmel. Overall pleasant.

T: a little acidic wood flavor upfront Followed by deep warm malt. some acidity stays on your pallet for a decent amount of time.

M: good carbonation slightly thick.

O: this is a decent malty brew. I'm glad I got it in my variety pack but nothing I would seek out
