I’m a big fan of the Great Divide portfolio. Jake showed me the Yeti not too long ago… and it’s amazing! Anyway, today we are sipping on a big IPA called Titan. I wonder if they had the name before they had the ABV. Anyway, I like the Great Divide so let’s see what this one does for my palate.

In the Glass: In the glass it looks like a typical IPA. But the head is pretty thick and has a thick and creamy lace. Because of the head, I hope the beer has a thickness to it. It has a big ABV… 7.1%. Let’s see what she smells like.

Nose: It’s not as hoppy as I wanted it to be, but it has a subtle IPA nose. I like the hops, but the thickness of the head might be taking some away from the aroma. Plus, it’s right out of the fridge. I bet this heats up nicely.

Flavor: The flavor is incredible. There are a few things happening here. First you are hit with some bubbles, then are hit with the sweetness you expect out of a thick brew. Then the hops kick in, but it’s more like a tap… not too strong on the hops. They are subtle and provide a solid transition in to the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is great. There is a ton of stuff going on as the beer enters your mouth and moves to the back of the throat. You really do experience a lot as you smell/drink/swallow this beer.

Aftertaste: This is a thick beer… and the aftertaste leaves a certain thickness to be enjoyed. There is a hint of dryness on the back of the tongue. It makes me think of a handmade root beer or something. Just as the nose will get better as the beer heats up, I bet the flavors will change too.

This is one good IPA. Bottoms up people!

A: Pours a translucent gold with one and a half fingers of slightly off-white head. The foam fades fairly quickly leaving a ton of residue along the edges of the glass. Decent lacing as it drinks.

S: The nose is sweet with caramel malts, a good pine presence, and just a dash of orange citrus. It smells inviting.

T: It starts out with a sweet malty backbone upon the first second. The pine hops come on second with a touch of juicy orange. As the beer progresses along, I get a small floral component and a taste of fresh cut grass. The finish is sticky with bitter biting pine, some alcohol, and some malt.

M: Medium bodied beer. It's sweet and coating to start, flavorful and well balanced in the middle, and finishes sticky with bitters and malt.

O: Good beer. Not something I'd buy all the time, considering how many better IPAs are out there, but it's good. I'd drink it out at a bar if the tap list didn't have any better options.

12oz bottle poured into a shaker pint.

Appearance
Gold with 1 finger of white head that dissipates quickly. Excellent clarity with moderate carbonation.

Nose
Grapefruit juice, honeydew, orange zest, caramel and notes of butterscotch.

Taste
Grapefruit juice and honeydew melon with lighter hints of tangerine zest and florals. Honey like malts with hints of caramel. Finishes with light notes of pine sap.

Mouthfeel
Medium bodied, smooth and lightly bitter.

Overall
This is one mellow IPA. It's really smooth and easy drinking.

Not as hoppy as I'd like, but still a very tasty brew. Overpowering malt presence, which isn't bad, but when drinking alongside a Cali IPA, it really stands out. A strong looking beer that left impressive lacing long after the beer was gone. I look forward to the aroma of a good IPA, but this one is lacking. I like this beer and would have again (likely in the late Fall or Winter), but overall it doesn't scream great IPA. This feels like kick ass Pale Ale to me!

This was the first beer I ever reviewed and my first time trying an offering from Great Divide. I enjoyed this at some random Marriott hotel bar on the city limits of Denver. It's a very good IPA, but maybe a touch overrated. Strong and floral hops smell and taste. Slight touch of citrus. One of the best things about this beer is its appearance, the dark golden color and perfect head can definitely cause some vertical displacement. Checks all the boxes of what you'd want in a good IPA, but there's nothing all that special here.
