Good old 22oz bottle with a straight forward label. I can tell as I’m pouring that the rapidly forming head will be sticky and resilent, it didn’t make a liar our of me. The head is a white dimpled monster that leaves nice, intricate webs of lacing down the glass. The body of the beer is a ruby tinted copper with a slight haze, sparse little chunks of matter here and there and almost no visible carbonation. The nose is vibrant and dominated by citrusy hop aromas, light hints of pine and blending with the sweet malt backing creates a lovely apricot aroma. Flavor-wise this IPA is a bit sweeter and less dry than many of the style. Sweet and sticky with caramel up front, picking up a subtle bubble-gum/cotton candy sweetness flavor as well. The bitterness is moderate (a bit less than preferable), the hop flavors are lovely. The tart fruitiness of the hops both create their own and meld with the flavors of the malt to create diverse flavors of honey drizzled watermelon, honey-dew, apricot, and grape-fruit tossed with a sparse sprinkling of pine needles. Mouthfeel is near-still and medium bodied, very nice. This is a very “balanced” IPA. Looking forward to having it again.

Poured into a Dogfish Spiegelau glass. Label says Bottled on FEB 20 2013.

A- Pours a medium amber color with a 1/2 inch off-white head that retains pretty well before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and a full sheet of surface foam. Semi-resilient lacing leaves small clots behind on the glass.

S- Piney, musty hop aroma with a considerable alcohol fume. Slightly medicinal.

T- Medium-high bitterness that's earthy and semi-astringent from the booze presence. There's a small amount of cereal grain sweetness in the aftertaste. Slightly vegetal.

M- Semi-sharp and oily with a resinous hop bite. Medium body and carbonation.

O- I like Hercules better since, with this one, the booziness isn't as justified.

Clear yellowish orange with a fluffy white head that sticks around for a long time. Leaves nice sticky lacing.

Hit first with some sweet malts, followed by a mellow citrusy hop aroma. Pretty subdued, not too complex, but nice.

A little malt forward, but pretty balanced between the same sweet malts I picked up in the aroma, followed by some basic citrusy hops. I'm not really getting much of the piney hops they describe, but they are in there in the background. Kind of basic, but good.

Moderate body and modrate carbonation. Basically spot on with what I expect from the style as well. Some nice creaminess too it too. Refreshing, yet has some substance. Very nice.

My hopes were pretty high given the super high marks for this one, and it's definitely pretty good, it just didn't really stand out to me all that much. Maybe it's a bit old. I'd recommend it though, for just a good, basic IPA that isn't trying anything too crazy.

From a 355 ml bottle (dated April 29, 2013) into a globe glass.

A-A slightly aggressive pour produces almost no head, just a thin collar of patchy, white foam. The beer is deep copper in color, clear, and pretty still.

S-There are some nice hop notes here! I smell orange, grapefruit, pineapple, and a bit of lemon and pine. There is just a hint of biting chalkiness and soapiness, which is offset by the mild caramel sweetness from the malts.

T-The taste lacks some of the complexity and fruit from the smell. I detect more pine and caramel maltiness here. There is still a decent wave of citrus and pineapple, but the overall impression is more bitter and sharp. A nice example of this style.

M-The beer starts out with a mildly-assertive, lightly-prickly carbonation. There is some hint of hoppy oiliness, but this beer is not terribly dank or stick feeling.

O-After umpteen different times that I have ordered and enjoyed this beer while out and about, I was pleased to finally review it at home. The smell, in particular, is a high point with loads of delicious, hop-forward flavors and just the right of amount of tan, caramel malts to balance things. The beer loses points for looks, which were pretty meh, but I will happily finish the six-pack I purchased.
