Vintage 08. With the beer gushing out of the bottle, the pour had to be fast, leaving a healthy two finger dark tan head atop a solid brown body with amber edges. The smell is mostly cherries, with some obvious tartness and funk. The oak is also very apparent.

Wow. Extremely tart all the way through, but especially up front. A blast of cherries hits you at the beginning and never really goes away, dominating the flavor until it dissolves into a candy sweet tartness in the finish/aftertaste. The oak is much less noticeable in the taste than the smell, though it eventually makes an appearance in the aftertaste. It's a good thing I like cherries, because this beer has little more to offer. It's fantastic in its ability to overwhelm the palate with its intense flavor.

Mouthfeel is good. Well carbonated, but a bit thicker than I would like it to be, since it is not as "airy" on the palate. This also brings down its drinkability, though there certainly won't be any problem finishing it.

2009 Vintage

A - Pours a deep plum, almost deep brown with little to no head.

S - Ripe cherries, not bright or overtly sour. Acidic with woodyness.

T - Metallic to start off. Really off putting. Develops into a white grape with an earthy and oaky flavor.

M - The body was a little fuller than I was expecting. Not a lot of carbonation.

O - I'm used to sours from RR. This is different, not that that's a bad thing.

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter. Label says Batch 343.

A- Pour barely yields a head as the 1/8 inch surface foam quickly flitters away to a thin ring around the edge of the glass leaving tiny wisps of surface foam. Nearly no lacing.

S- Pungent sour cherry smell with the wine barrel presence really coming through. Has a very sweet, fruity smell kind of like Manischewitz.or grape-flavored hard candy

T- Mildly sour cherry flavor and then WHAM! a smack down of oak barrel. It brings with it drying tannins and a somewhat band-aid-like astringency. The fruitiness tries to fight through but it's pretty tough with all the wine-like characteristics just rushing in after the usual Flanders-style flavors. I feel like the aging and the alcohol really turn this one into a sipper.

M- Dry almost to the point of sandpaper tongue with a moderate amount of pucker and burn. Low carbonation and a fullish body.

O- I'd like to enjoy this beer and it has a unique aroma but the wine barrel presence just reminds me of why I don't drink wine. It's an interesting combination but not something I'd seek out again.

review #650. 500mL bottle into tulip. batch 343. 1 of 2280 bottles.

A: bottles opens with a 'phew'. literally no uphm behind this cap. pours a dark mahogany body. head is non-existent. not too impressed so far.

S: woody. earthy and acidic. good old fashioned bugs in this nose. mild alcohol wisps between sour

T: an acidic bang starts things off. but quickly mellows into a plum/sherry fruity flavor. similar to the nose, there are definitely earthy and oaky flavors that are easier to decipher in the finish after some of the acidic flavor has dissipated. a little bit of acetone. lingering acidic fruit.

M: pretty much as flat as a brew as I have had in a while. however, it does work OK here. even if I would prefer more fizz. full bodied.

D: besides being lackluster to look at and lacking carbonation, not a bad brew. glad the wood is there with the all this acid. really starts to grow on you as you consume. I would recommend this to my sour-head friends.

Drank from my Duvel tulip

A - Pours a deep mahogany with a small off white head that reduces quickly.

S - Coffee, Dark Fruits and vinous oak

T - Up front some very bitter flavours, followed by some serious dark barrelled fruits and vinous flavours. The finish is long and sour with hints of coffee. Excellent.

M - Medium body and carbonation.

O - Quite a complex Flanders Oud Bruin, and offers plenty. The coffee hit is interesting. Given the fact that the beer was aged in old red wine barrels, I would have liked to have seen more influence of red wine. This is a very heavy FOB and may not suit all. It takes the standard style to a new level.

Poured from 25oz bottle into tulip. Batch 343 - I am assuming 2012 vintage. Pours a deep brown with a red hue. No head. It looks like wine. Very sour lactic aroma; lots of wine like; almost vinegar like...i actually quite like it. Also lots of woody chocolatey malty notes.
Taste is sweet chocolatey belgian-like malts mixed with some sour/tart vinegar and woody wine barrell. Its super tart and acidic, and Its a bit too flat, but it somewhat works well.
Its more like wine than beer and I like it.
