On tap at Old Chicago.

Appearance: Light orange and a bit hazy topped by white foam.

Smell: Hop is noticeable initially but fades to a bready malt scent.

Taste: More sweet malt than hop bite initially. Bitterness does show up, but I was expecting a bit more hop based on the labeling of 'Angry'. After the bready malt sweetness fades a bit there is trace of resinous hop that lingers on the finish.

Mouthfeel: medium. Carbonation is decent.

Drinkability: Mildly hopped and slightly more bitter than sweet, this one really doesn't distinguish itself, other than being 'organic'.

A- Copperish-golden, darker than most in style, head is initially one finger thick. Fades very quickly, minimal lacing.
S- Just a bit of citrus hops. More toasted flavor than I'd like.
T- More hops here than aromas would indicate. Slightly citrusy, with some toffee, lightly caramel notes. Well balanced.
M- Lighter than I would like. Carbonation is reasonably smooth and soft.
O- An easy drinking beer but honestly it just didn't do it for me. Nice to try, but probably won't revisit.

On-tap at Barley John's. Was presented as an IPA,good IBU and lots of caramel and marmelade, we know now it is a pale. Wierd funkly. Yellow with a little white head and spider lace. Drying. Average mouthfeel at best and an average beer. I could drink it once but not too tasty.

A-Copper with a thin off-white head reducing to a ring. Left behind a healthy does of lacing.

S-Bready sweet malts with a faint citrus hop kick. Not overwhelming for sure...I want a bit more kick fromt his one.

T-Initial sweetness quickly followed by a nice, sharp hop bite of orange rind and lemon peel. Sureprised there is so much hop kik in the palate but not in the aroma.

M-Medium-light body with a sharp, crisp, dry aftertaste.

D-Solid....only lacking in the nose. Plenty of texture and easy to drink. I am starting to get impressed with Flat Earth offerings.

Nice copper orange pour, nice white head that stays throughout. Nice aroma of hops, citrus and floral with a sweetness from the malts. Nice flavors of carmel, but a little lacking on the hop flavors, this one has a touch of bitterness to it, but I am missing the flavors from the hops. Nice creamy chewey mouthfeel and very well carbonated, I will enjoy a few of these.

On-tap at the new Acadia Cafe. Had a pint at their grand reopening. This is a pretty nice APA, but I don't agree with the previous reviews. I found the beer to follow the style quite nicely with a bouquet of citrus hops matched by biscuit-flavored malt, but it wasn't anything radically different or truly outstanding. I just didn't get an amazing depth of flavor. Still very tasty, I just want to make that distinction. The balance here is spot on and commendable, and this is something I'd recommend to anyone who likes Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

Another tasty beer from St. Paul, thanks Flat Earth.

On tap at Stub and Herb's into a pint glass

I had this beer earlier this year at the Autumn Brew Review. I loved it at the ABR and had to find it again. Tonight I finally made to Stub and Herb's where it is featured on tap.

Appearance: Beautiful clear-orange color with copper tones. NOt much of a head today, but I like to think this is due to the pour and the glass. At the ABR it was much better.

Smell: Quite nice hoppy smell. Hints of citrus and suprising a light malt smell. Almost smells like an IPA w/ the intensity of the hops.

Taste: Crisp, clean and satifying. Nice citrusy flavor with outstanding hoppiness for an APA. It tastes a little like an IPA at first, but the bitterness is toned down to the level of an APA. The malts are light in this one, but detectable. The hops prevail in this brew, but I like the way the malts come through in the end. The brew finishes with a pleasant lasting bitterness, which carries to the next drink. Overall I enjoy the tast of this beer due to its crip, clean citrus taste, with a little lasting bitterness that seems to coerce more drinks.

Mouthfeel: Quite sharp and crisp at first but finishes light and very smooth for a pale ale. Very nice for this style.

Drinkability: This is a beer that I can drink any night and every night. I sincerely hope that Flat Earth releases this brew in 12 oz bottles in six packs and hopefully in 12 packs some day. I could definitely see this as being my "go-to" beer. I also feel good about the fact that is organic, for what it is worth. A definite must try from a remarkable Minnesota brewery.

Served on tap, this pours a clear coppery amber color with no head to speak of. The smell is lightly of a citrussy fruitiness. This in no way prepares one for the intense mix of flavors in this ale. There is a bready maltiness along with a brown sugary sweetness, which is pleasantly overlaid by a citrussy hoppiness. Rather than blend seamlessly together, the flavors are all distinctly and intensely present. The mouthfeel is rich and full. Because of the intensity of the flavors, this is a sippin' brew, but a very original and tasty one.

On tap at Acadia.

Cloudy orange color...did they leave off the filter for this one?...little to no head on this pour.

Aroma:soft citrus from plenty of hops. Lightly tart. Almost right for style, but a bit muted...I want it to leap out at me. Not the case.

Orange rind and lemon peel in the taste. Very bright, but with a smack of bitterness.
(I don't have a lot of info on this one, it's not on the Flat Earth website yet, and word from the distributor is that it's Federally recognized as "organic" and that it's "just tremendous." And further word on hops, malts, alc.%, etc. is left to our imagination and/or guesswork. )

Nice hoppy kick continues on the palate, citric sweet with a slight sour ( a little too sour, mayebe) twist. Medium bodied, plenty of texture, easy-drinking, but not too smooth, just enough tumble and tickle to keep this tongue happy.

Well done, but not quite there yet. That little sour trickle at the end starts to really bug me, and doesn't really help ensure total satisfaction. Almost my favorite Flat Earth brew, except for that. Perhaps later batches may reduce this flaw?

Poured from a 22 oz brown bomber into a clear glass mug. No clear freshness date. Purchased by my brother Greg at a Minneapolis-area bottle shop. Reviewed from notes.

A: Dark copper-red with 1-2 fingers of pretty rocky, off-white head with good retention and ample lacing.

S: Decent aroma with grapefruit and honeysuckle combining with some lemon and floral notes. The maltiness doesn't have a lot of character in the aroma. There is a "homebrew" tanginess to the aroma.

T: The tanginess follows through to the flavor as well. The beer is not well enough attenuated and leaves too many sweet malt sugars which give this beer a tangy, light lemonade flavor with much more bitterness. I think this beer would be a lot better with less bitterness, namely less early- and mid-boil hop additions and more late-boil hop additions to increase the hop flavor without the big bitterness. There is also a midl vegetal flavor that would also improve with less early hopping. THe maltiness is mildly crackery but is not interesting enough to carry the big bitterness.

M: Average carbonation with medium-light medium body and not enough dryness.

O: Not a good or great example of the style, merely middle of the road. Has some attenuation problems and drinks like an average homebrew not a refined craft beer.

22oz bomber into mason jar

Look is clear amber-orange with a nonexistent head. Smell is warm malt, apples, oranges, grassy hops. Taste is malty/bready and wooden, yet bitter with slightly spicy hops. Good balance between the hop and malt, meaning they play well off each other.

Not a fan of this one. Neither the malt nor the hops were especially tasty(too fruity/estery, and too medicinally bitter and earthy). Still, I can see how this may appeal to some.

Poured from a bomber into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color with a half finger of fluffy off white head that sticks around pretty well.

Smell: The smell is really mild with some malt and mild fruit notes. Not a whole lot going on here.

Taste: As with the smell, this is a really mild beer. Some malt and a mild hop bitterness. There are some citrus notes as well. The fruity notes seem a bit out of place.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with rather large bubbles and a slick finish.

Overall: This isn't a very good beer. It looked fine, but nothing else about it was very appealing. I wouldn't have another.

Big thanks goes out to MBrausen for sending me this one just so I could tick it! Shared this one with my doppelganger after dropping my Audi (RIP) off at the shop. Served from bottle into a Bell's stemmed tulip. Poured a deep red-orange with a minimal white head. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, fruit, citrus, floral, caramel, and subtle caramel hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, caramel hop, floral hops, and subtle citrus. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. The flavor profile on this one was quite well balanced and blended well together. However, it really left me wanting more from each sip. For the style, this was a pretty solid brew, but not life changing though. Worth trying if you have the opportunity without a doubt.

22oz. bottle into pint glass

A. Golden Orange with Amber hue, good head and retention along with some nice lacing. Looks clear but if you look closely has small particles of sediment dancing around within.

S. Bready malts, mild caramel and spicy fruits esters, more of a coriander like aroma with faint citrus

T. Picking up a initial bready and yeasty malt profile up front and a finish much like that of cardamom, can not detect any citrus in the hop profile, but has a mild pine undertone, more like the flavor of spruce tips though.

M. Dry, medium carbonation, alcohol comes through more then it should here.

O. This is an Ok APA. I prefer mine far hoppier. This kinda tastes more like a blend of an Oktoberfest, a heffe, and a IPA then an APA.

22 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance-Amber in color with brilliant clarity. Moderate beige head had tiny bobbles and decent retention.

Aroma-Tropical fruits, orange, and light citrus/grapefruit hops with big caramel malt and some fruity esters (strawberries, cherries, and apples). Fair amount of yeast-derived character for an APA, but it smells pretty darn good.

Flavor-Tons of caramel malt, with a hint of breadiness as well. Flavors take quite some time to play out on the palate-first malt and berry fruitiness, but then piney, orangey citrusy hop flavors begin to grow on the palate. Slowly, hop bitterness builds, leaving an overall woody hop flavor with a touch of caramel. Tastes awesome.

Mouthfeel-Medium body with moderate carbonation. Leaves slight coating of numbing bitterness on the tongue.

An awesome interpretation of the APA from Flat Earth. While not as hoppy as most, and certainly with a lot more fruity esters, but its delicious nonetheless. Love it.

Poured from 22 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass.

Appearance: Rich golden orange with lots of bubbles. A mild pour gives a huge four finger head that has good retention and lacing.

Smell: A solid aroma of citrus and floral hops with hints of orange, pineapple, and pine with a good amount of bready caramel malts. Smells pretty balanced.

Taste: A light sweetness from the citrus hops is backed by a mild piney bitterness. This is followed by a good amount of bready, toasted caramel malts. Good balance throughout as the taste is not very bitter or sweet.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a carbonation on the higher side. Creamy and very smooth.

Overall: A pretty solid and tasty version of an American Pale Ale. Easy drinking and flavorful.

Poured from a 22 oz. brown bottle into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Clear deep golden color. One finger off-white foam head that receded quickly and left a little lacing.

Smell: Subtle citrus and pine hops with a hint of sweet malts beneath.

Taste: Citrus and a little bit of pine hops up front, with sweet malts mellowing out the finish. A decent American Pale Ale, not the best out there, but far from the worst.

Mouth Feel: Medium bodied with nice carbonation.

Drinkability: Nothing really stands out with this APA, I wish it had a little more hops or something to lift it a notch above, but it's very drinkable and slightly above average.

From 22 oz. bottle. Apprearance is dark golden and not wholly pale. White, tall head that goes down at an average rate leaving some lacing. Clear.

Smells of American hops. Citrus is low, piney and low floral. Malt is subdued. 0 diacetyl or off-aromas.

Taste is again predominantly of American hops with a high level of bitterness. As an APA goes, the balance is to the hops but this seems a touch strong. Aftertaste lingers of bitterness with a hint if sweetness. Some grain character.

M is full with hop resins. Not as drinkable as I would have liked. Decent body. Next time I will try this a bit colder but it is fairly standard for an APA.

Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into an Imperial pint glass.

A: Angry Planet pours a rich amber hue with a cream colored head that slowly settles. Lacing is sticky, and carbonation is somewhat moderate.

S: Floral hop aroma up front, with hints of pine and some citrus. Malt lends a backround of caramel and toast.

T: A much bigger malt backbone than I expected. It's much bigger on the palate than on the nose. Caramel and bread, with dried fruit character are dominant. Hops balance out the beer with hints of grapefruit, pine, and rose petal.

Notes: This is a very full-bodied version of an American Pale, with a definite note of heat from the alcohol. Otherwise, it's a pretty tasty brew, and unique in it's own way. Not my favorite offering from Flat Earth, but still worth having from time to time.

Review from notes 2/6/11

A: Perfectly clear copper/dark amber color. A foamy two finger head formed and dissipated slowly. Bits of lacing left down the glass.

S: Light citrus aroma, some orange and a little bit of grapefruit. Heavier on the malt, bread and some caramel.

T: Again, some light citrus and a little bit of pine. There is a nice pale wheat flavor. The malts come through as biscuit and some toasted bread.

M/D: Medium bodied with nice carbonation. Overall, its pretty good. I wish the hoppiness was kicked up a little. Easy drinking though.

22oz bottle, New Belgium globe, and no freshness date. Thank you for the extra, Craig!

It is a fine looking beer. The color is glowing orange amber and the head is a big tower of a thing. It's color is the standard off-white and the retention is solid. Everything is as it should be in an APA.

The aroma of Cascades is undeniable; floral, grassy, lemon and orange citrus, and slightly soapy. The Irish Ale yeast strain the bottle says they used is pretty apparent as well. This could pass as an American interpretation of the Irish Red style. There is caramel and nutty malt.

Flavors are right in line with what I smell. Caramel and Munich malt with soapy, floral Cascade. A little salinity or just savory sneaks in. I like the malt bill even though it wanders between APA, Amber, Oktoberfest, and Irish Red Ale territory.

Some how I served this a little too warm for the style. It's full bodied for a pale, with moderate-low carbonation. Creamy.

This is a very pleasant pale ale with those classic Cascades, though the emphasis keeps coming back to nice malt bill.

pours out of the 22oz. bottle a dark amber/garnet colour with a very thin head. some bubles of lace. not very good retention. baked bread aroma, some burnt sugar and citrus round out the nose. sugary malt driven flavour with a good dose of cascade hops to compliment but not overpower. some hints of spice and earth most likely from the wheat used. back end bitterness provides just enough grit to balance things out. medium bodied, light and easy mouthfeel. uninspired drinkability.

approachable and quenching for an APA. a bit boring for me but i suppose this would be a nice pint to pair with some bar food or pub grub. otherwise quite average in most regards.

A: The beer pours a pretty dark amber, almost copper, color with a khaki colored head.

S: Lots of caramel on the nose with plenty of toffee to go along with it. A bit of bread and a shocking amount of alcohol for a 6% beer. At least there are some floral and earthy hops to try to save the beer.

T: Quite bitter with a bit of tea and cough syrup flavors which just don't make any sense and are not any good. Again, an emphasis on the malt as the flavor is heavy on the bread and toffee. A bit of grass and straw to it and maybe a touch of citrus peel.

M: The body is medium and so is the carbonation.

D: Not sure if this bottle was just old or what, because this beer was not good.

Poured from a 22 oz. bomber to an Imperial Pint

A - Dark Golden Amber with about 3 fingers of head. Great looking Ale

S - The smell is pretty faint of hops, malt, and fruit. Not overly fragrant for sure.

T - Very hoppy up front with a fruity finish and lingering fruity aftertaste. Some malt and grain present.
M - Thin, sharp, and crisp. Typical of a Pale, but this one is very carbonated.

D - Pretty drinkable, knocking back 22 oz. is no problem. A lot going on for a Pale Ale which could be good or bad depending on your preference. I personally like it.
