For general details read Instrumentality's thorough review and allow me to second the motion. This is a solid place all around and a great addition to LA's slowly developing downtown scene.
After grabbing a bite in Little Tokyo, we headed over to the Redwood for some drinks. I was a little worried when we got to the front door and walked in. The nautical theme is almost over the top. If the waitstaff was wearing sailor or pirate outfits I probably would've walked out and condemned this place as "the Chuck E. Cheese of Caribbean bar." But as is the decor just makes the Redwood more interesting. We found a table towards the back and had a seat in one of the thickly-padded, comfortable booths. We had the Downtown Brown, Craftman's 1903 and Heavenly Hefeweizen. Everyone seemed to like what they had and my 1903 tasted fresh and lively.
I can definitely recommend the Redwood and will probably go back next time we're in LA's downtown area.

Headed down to the "pirate bar" as my friends call it (they have pirate stuff over their taps by the bar). Everytime I go it seems to be damn crowded, or some lame hipster band is screeching in the corner room of the bar.
Place did look nice though, didn't seem too dirty (or too clean for that matter) and the staff was zipping around getting everybody's food and drinks.
The selection on tap is pretty good, nothing rare or amazing. I had some Craftsman there last time I went, my buddy had some Stone on tap. Haven't had a chance to try their food although we both wanted to. We just figured we would load up on beer calories as opposed to food calories.
Overall, not a bad place if you're in the area. If you've been to downtown and know the area, just imagine this is the hipster version of "The Smell" that sells beer. Oh, parking for this place isn't too bad if you stick with the lot behind it, although sometimes attendants aren't working there, which makes me kinda wonder if a)somebody is gonna jack my car or b) they lock up early. Luckily, I haven't had to deal with either.

The moment I walked in I knew I would like this place. It was a late lunch and as we were being escorted to our table we passed the bar which had the Red Sox vs. Rangers game on and a Stone IPA tap handle. This Boston ex-pat was sold.
Just having Stone IPA on tap raises anything in Los Angeles to the upper echelon of beer bars even if slowly more and more I'm seeing places catch on to better beers. They also had a couple Craftsman and some better Germans amongst others. The pirate theme of it all is not subtle, but nor is it irritating. The staff were very pleasant, making sure our party was kept happy.
The food was decent. The menu said about the hamburger being the "best in town" or some other sweeping accolade. It wasn't but it was good.
Good friends, good food, good beer and the Red Sox game on? Can't beat that.

My buddy and I stumbled upon this place as we were searching for somewhere to eat near my work. I had heard that this place used to be a popular spot but closed down. Apparently it just reopened a few weeks ago with a "new" look (although I have no basis of comparison).
We simply walked in the front door and sat down at a table near the entrance, so I can't fully describe the atmosphere, but there's a picture gallery on the web site (www.theredwoodbar.com) that speaks volumes. From what I could see, the place was comfortable. It had a sort of rustic feel with lots of old wood, along with various decorations suggestive of a pirate theme (apparently more obvious behind the actual bar). The lighting was dim but not too dark, giving the place a feel that was perfectly lodged between casual and fancy.
I had low expectations of the tap list, but when I requested it, I was amazed. I believe they have eight taps including Stone Pale Ale, Alesmith Anvil (edit: since changed to Anchor Steam), Rogue Dead Guy Ale, Craftsman 1903 and Heavenly Hefe, Guinness, Stella Artois, and maybe one or two others. This is quite possibly the best selection for a small number of taps that I've seen in any bar, let alone in downtown LA. I sense from the picture that at least one of the taps rotates, as I don't think I see the 1903 (or is it the Anvil?). At any rate, I had the Stone Pale and Alesmith Anvil. Both were served in frosted pint glasses (forgot to ask otherwise), and both were fresh and tasty once they warmed up a bit.
On top of that, they have a decent bottle selection. So far I've had/shared the 750mL of La Chouffe and a smaller bottle of Delirium Tremens. There are several others that are primarily micros but not beers I'd normally be willing to pay extra for in bottles.
The menu's also available online, but to sum up, the average dish is about $10, and the portions, at least of what we ordered, were very generous. I had the mussels and fries ($11) and my dish probably consisted of about 30 meaty mussels, a handful of fries, and some really tasty broth with a bit of spice to it. My buddy had fish & chips, which looked filling. He wasn't particularly fond of them, but then he's enormously picky (and fish & chips wouldn't be my first choice) so I take it with a grain of salt.
The service was attentive, and while not being terribly knowledgeable (the waitress made the common assumption that "Hefeweizen" is a brand, and she had to check to verify that "Anvil" was made by Alesmith and wasn't a brand in and of itself), she was helpful nonetheless and I'm sure she's learned from our discussion. Our water glasses were never empty, which is key.
I will definitely be back, and probably often given the proximity, selection, and reasonable prices. Good thing I take public transportation to work!
[Edit] During my last visit (2/6/07), I met the guy who selects their beer (may also be the owner - not sure) and he seems to really know his stuff. He said they had Racer 5 on tap at one point as well, and while I'm disappointed that it's no longer there, at least the place had the decency to carry it for awhile. The guy sitting next to him used to distribute for Stone, so apparently this bar has its head in the right place.
