Big and tasty-- everything you'd want a Porter to be. Plenty of black malt with just a touch of sour charcoal in the aftertaste. Smooth and slick on the tongue. Nice nose of roast barley. Pleasantly sweet and malty at first taste. Shades into chocolate darkness. Ends with some fruit and the slightest bitterness. Makes you want to keep sipping. This might actually deserve the adjective "velvety" that is so overused.
On tap at Local Habit in San Diego. This won gold at 2011 GABF in Category 74 Robust Porter.

On tap at Rock Bottom La Jolla.
A: Black as a moonless, starless night with a frothy light brown head.
S: Strong roasted grain presence with notes of earth and blackstrap molasses. Dark chocolate accompanies coffee and a touch of licorice.
T: Rich dark chocolate with pronounced blackstrap molasses and a firm roasted malt presence. Coffee is strong throughout. There's an upper low to lower medium level of earthy bitterness.
M: Full body with medium carbonation. The mouthfeel is creamy and silky.
Overall: A very nice Robust Porter.

On tap at Rock Bottom La Jolla. I wasn't at the bar, but the description implied it was a nitro tap.
Dark pour with a creamy light tan head, about a finger thick. Very nice aroma of light roasted malts and sweet cream. Taste is pretty much the same. No discernible hops, and not too complex overall, but it is a very tasty beer. Medium-bodied and quite smooth. Easy to drink too; I made sure to have a couple of these.

This beer struck me as being pleasant but a pretty unmemorable porter. Some nice roastiness, but not much different than many other porters and stouts out there.
Appearance was decent - a rather thin texture of opaque black with 1 cm of light white-tan head. Aroma was fairly faint; I think this beer was served too cold and that hurt my ability to pick-up much from it. I got some roastiness, and maybe a touch of chocolate, but not nearly intense enough to be really impactful. Flavor was more dark roastiness which wasn't intense enough to make me think of "burned pizza crust" but was nonetheless pleasant. Mouthfeel was thinner than some but by no means watery.
Not bad, just not really above average. I would have it again when visiting Rock Bottom - Milwaukee, but I wouldn't go back for this beer.
I had this on-tap at the restaurant over a hot pretzel, which I would HIGHLY recommend (the pretzel).

Cask-conditioned from the hand pump/beer engine and taken home in a growler. Pours an opaque black with a cocoa colored head. Rather nice aroma consists of cocoa, roasted malt, milk chocolate and slightly vinous. Mouthfeel is a little thinner than desired. Decent roasted malt flavor. Milk chocolatey and vinous. Not overly complex. Tad grainy finish. A slightly better than average porter. A little more weight to the body would have been nice.
