Dark chocolate brown with meager gold highlights along the bottom edge. A thick chunk of golden sand colored cream was created on the pour and left a great deal of fantastic looking sea foam lace on the shore... er, glass... during ebb tide. What a looker.
The aroma was as expected after hearing WSS described as a highly-hopped American stout. The two hops in question are Chinook and Centennial, excellent choices for just about any style. Well, most of them. Roasted malt and pine were especially prominent.
Western Shore Stout tasted even better than it smelled and *almost* deserved the next highest taste score. It was exquisitely balanced from a hophead's perspective, although malt lovers... or maltheads... or maltoids... or whatever we're calling them these days... would surely disagree.
The flavor profile included bittersweet chocolate cookies (Oreos), roasted coffee beans and increasingly prodigious amount of white grapefruit zestiness and pine resinousness with warming. The final swallow was especially hop juicy and lip smackingly delicious.
The mouthfeel, while not a standout, was also solid across the board. It firmed up over the brief life of the pint, and the carbonation, in both amount and quality, was without fault.
The Western Shore of the name refers to the West Coast of the United States (that is, California), which is where wdmrock spent his formative years as a brewer. What could be better than a brewer who loves to use hops and a BA who loves to drink hoppy beer? Nothing, that's what.
