Rock Bottom IPA
LOOK: Pours a clear firey orange. Soapy white head leaves a fine display of lace. Has a very solid appearance.
SMELL: Citrusy hops, caramel malts and fresh grapefruit juice.
TASTE: Citrusy upfront with rind and pine notes. Malt body is supporting with a mild caramel and toasty note but it is easily overcome by hop bitterness and semi tropical hop flavor.
FEEL: Medium bodied and crisp with a hop bite and grapefruit lingering into the finish.
OVERALL: A good IpA, highlights the hop flavor well. Surprised by how much I liked this.

From: Rock Bottom Brewery in Longmont, Colo.
Price: $5.25
Purchased: May 5, 2013
Consumed: May 5, 2013

Poured a caramel dark orange color with two fingers of off-white head. Healthy foam layer lacing on the sides. Good retention all the way down.
Smelled wet Cascade hops, caramel malts and lemon for the most part.
Tasted a grittier version of the smell. Wet Cascade hops, light rye hops, iced tea, little earthy and citrus. Nothing was too overpowering. Bitterish finish.
Medium body. Creamy texture. Average carbonation. Abrupt bitter finish.
Not a bad beer for a restaurant. I thought I had some better ones at the La Jolla location, but this one was decent.

Pours a hazy golden light copper color with a dense one inch cream head that lingers indefinitely.
Orange and muted grapefruit, tangerine, and pine comprise the initial aroma, with fresh cut grass and dank hops rounding things out. There's subtle bready malt at the base.
Flavor reveals that they need to clean their lines. The citrus is present, but not as prolific as in the aroma. Tangerine, mango, and grapefruit are dominant, while resin and fairly sweet caramel malt form the backbone, leading into a slightly dry, mildly bitter finish.
Body is slick, on the full side, with moderate carbonation, a touch of astringency, and substantial alcohol warmth.
Not bad, for a restaurant beer. Citrus hop flavor is well represented, and the finish isn't overly bitter.

A: Beer was served in a pint glass at the Homestead, PA location. No head at all. Nice golden color.
S: Very pleasant pineapple aroma. Simcoe hops would be my guess.
T: The aroma lead me to believe that the hop flavor would be overpowering but it was actually very balanced. Notes of citrus and pineapple dominate.
M: Carbonation was moderate. Hop flavor lingers long after you take a sip.
O: I really enjoyed this beer and will need to take a growler home the next time that I visit RB.

i drank this after the hop bomb. big mistake i think, as i could hardly taste this one. its certainly a much lesser ipa than the hop bomb, and more of an english style in my opinion. it pours clear and light caramel colored, with an attractive inch and a half of white foam. the nose is balanced well, english smelling malts with a touch of wheat toast, and then a simple hop profile on the piney side, but not resinous. the flavor is almost too balanced to find the hops, as i expect to be able to do in an india pale ale. its bitter in the finish, but thats about it. some moderate malty sweetness lingers on as well. feel is good, very light in body for an ipa, a definite session beer, with an almost cask conditioned mouthfeel. pleasantly mild carbonation and a nice round texture. overall a good brew, not intense enough for an ipa in my book, but i guess the hop bomb fills that role.
